On a lighter note, that is one of the best sounding, quickest responding blown small blocks I've ever heard. It also has that very distinct and equally rare exhaust note, where as the rpm reaches a certain point, individual notes become what I can only describe as a single tone, similar to a whoosh of air. Much like a Top Fuel Engine does. To accomplish that level of performance with any fuel other than Nitro, well in my opinion says a lot about your knowledge of Engine building, and what components work together best. That combination you have there would be very impressive to see making a pass. Thanks for sharing it with us. Some of us still know how to appreciate fine craftsmanship.

Blower surge is nothing more than a rich/lean condition that can be tuned out (i.e. the motor is not tuned correctly) it can be tuned out be it carbs, EFI & even mechanical injection, often people do it intentionally because they think it sounds cool, it makes real tuners cringe because it is an out of tune rich/lean condition and it also has NOTHING to do with the cam that is another misconception, it is often heard more on mechanical injection on a blown application drag race, tractor pullers etc because they only care about wide open throttle but even those the surge can be tuned out

Shes cranky, I've never heard a blown carby engine surge like this.. I've only ever heard MFI cars with blower surge this aggressively. It revs so crisply and cleanly good lord thats impressive. Please tell us more about the combo, heads, compression etc.

Across the parking lot was an old engine builder that built everything from Top Fuel Hydro boat motors to Offy's. And about 5 doors down was one of the most historic original 427 Cobras on earth that occasionally ripped off burnouts in the parking lot. Now my life is boring and i work next to a glass company and a landscaper.. lol So thanks for the video..😁
It has to do with multiple factors but we have good luck with Blower Shop Blowers more than anyone. The camshaft and the tune all affect the surge. Good luck
We build blower engines all the time and if there is no such thing as blower surge that means the blower is not tuned right you are supposed to start the car up and is supposed to sound like a idling car,
The video may only show some of the adjustments made to tune the engine. We run them multiple times until they are adjusted to where he wants them. They may have been adjusted at another time.
That is one bad ass motor that would scare me half to death in a four-speed and 22 transmission hooked up to that I don’t even know if my transmission could even handle that

I thought you only had the surging at idle when you were using a constant flow fuel injection. I thought carburetors would have a nice smooth idol . Can you please comment?
Bill Siegel sorry for the delay. How much it surges depends on how you tune it and the size of the cam. Carbs can have a smooth idle if you want it to.

This is a serious question. I'm a young car ethuthiest. How can I make a ls3 camaro ss sound like this? Would I need a whole new crate? Motor ? I know I need cams but how do I make it idle like this supercharger?
I’ve heard lots of reasons why these engines idle the way they do and that with tuning it can be smoothed out. Box performance, could you explain please? I’m talking about a blown street engine not a race engine. Reason I ask is I’d like to build a blown small block but don’t want an idle like this on a regularly driven car. Blower surge happens because it’s too rich at idle. If you notice, he had it leaned out at one point and the idle was stable. Then he brought the idle screws back out a little and the surge came back. Some people like that. I hate it. I have a 6-71 blown small block in my hot rod. I tune that out completely so it doesn’t surge at all. If I backed the idle screws out 1/4 turn, the surge would come back. As Box Performance said though, the build has a lot to do with it as well. Some blower motors are more sensitive to surging than others.
Sorry, i missed some comment. You can tune the surge out but many customers prefer it so we leave it. But like the other reply stated some build have more surge than others.
Sorry, I missed this. It would run between $21,000-$35,000 depending upon what parts and blower you pick. This is a custom engine so the owner has $4500 just in the custom intake. The fuel for this one is 110 octane but you could build one for a less fuel.

Sounds like it has a tighter lobe separation cam than a typical blower cam of around 114.

How can you tune the engine when it has that big blower serge. How can you tell if it's tuned right.
Hi Matthew, they can tell by adjusting the carb and the idle and by experience. You can bring the idle up and the surge will decrease.
It's hungry, couple throttle snaps to clear It's throat.
That up-and-down is called "hunting". My dad used to hate it when the Jimmy was cold.
Only new engines do that hunt like that like the Jimmy's. We had one too. This engine has blower surge.

Yes, depending upon what carburetor I am tuning. Every carburetor type/brand will have a different setting.

It is an Erson Camshaft but it is a custom grind so I don't give out the numbers.

It is the combination of the build and the tune. The tune is rich so if you adjust the tune more lean it will reduce or eliminate the surge.

Double keying the crankshaft does nothing to take load off any other component besides the single damper drive key.

We would just leaning the tune out some. It runs rich and idles at a lower RPM than the drag cars do so it is very noticeable.

Add 100ci displacment and open headers. Or you can try replacing the cats and mufflers with straight pipes.
