  • Home Free star tenor Austin is blessed with an effortlessly high voice and a great connection to lyrics. He has the perfect musical theatre tenor voice but also a great 'country' vibe and I for one am jealous of his easy top notes!!! Love Austin's voice so much. It's true that he will soon leave chart-topping vocal group Home Free, even though this will make his super fans very sad. I wish Austin Brown the vest best for his world-beating solo career.

Austin does a nice job of these classic songs. His voice is well suited to older styles & he seems able to convey the emotion & feeling in them.

Austin took quite a risk in taking the first stanza so very slow, but he makes it work. He has an actor's approach to lyrics - he doesn't just hope they sound nice but invests every word with meaning and a place within the phrase. His mastery of rubato (easy to overlook as he does it so well) helps in bringing the lyrics home to us. He is very interested in sounds and the silence around them, as you can see here and in Bring Him Home.
Austin's solo career has been going very well and he has been firing off originals at such a rate that at times it's hard to keep up. You might want to check out some of his beautiful love songs (She Loves Me, I'll Go First), but also the two duets he has recorded with Makena Hartlin, another lovely voice. He will be with Home Free until the end of the tour just starting and after that gets to stay at home, start a family and explore what the musical world has to offer.

I agree the it was very slow. Listen how he lingers on the upbeats and unimportant syllables. (the)

O William, I'm so glad you did this one. It's one of my favorites by Austin. Just too short! He displays so many techniques in this piece: the fullness and roundness of his tone, but all the rasp, his ripply riffs, and of course his range. And Sebastian's accompaniment is perfect. Did you hear that Austin is leaving Home Free? There's a video on his channel explaining his decision.

Austin explained on a recent video and then a two part live stream that he wants time at home and to start a family. He’s leaving this fall after the Crazy(er) Life tour, date tbd.
HomeFree had previously announced that they would be touring less starting in 2024. Seems lockdown gave them all a taste of Home Life.

A great vehicle for Austin. Captivating at first listen, and it stands up well to the country style - riffs, very pronounced rubato and lingering on voiced consonants like "ng". Personally I prefer a simpler, more straightforward rendition because the song, as you point out, is so perfect that, to me, it doesn't need any embellishment. I expect that you have sung it many times in performance and I would love to hear your own rendition of it.

There is no doubt that Austin nailed this one. A moving and delicious rendition. Hopefully it foreshadows more wonderful things coming from Mr. Brown in his quasi-solo career. And as always your insightful analysis and expressive appreciation are first class.
Yet Danny Boy has little to do with Irish folk music, that style being rather different. In addition, the lyrics (written by an Englishman) are about Scotland not Ireland. Valleys white with snow in winter are rare in Ireland but common in Scotland. Also, the pipes calling young men to war are surely Scottish war bagpipes, such a scenario being unknown in Ireland for many centuries. Nor did they even have the proper pipes for it.
There are those of Irish extraction who deny the characterization of Danny Boy as being quintessentially Irish except possibly as a song sung at funerals. The English author, the Scottish subject and even the Northern Ireland origin of ‘Londonderry Air’ are considered by some to be insulting and unacceptable. I recall an Irish bar (Murphy’s) in Queens, New York City many years ago that during the month of March would remove the song from the jukebox. (45 rpm vinyl single, remember them?)
I am not one of those of course. I have no problem with Danny Boy being sung on Paddy’s Day or it being sung by someone like Harry Belafonte (and quite well too!) Just noting that there are those who are a bit too stubborn Irish to embrace this fine song.

I couldn't agree more and find your comment fascinating. Who was this Weatherly, KC, from Bath to write this defining Irish song!? You are right about the Sottish pipes - and most likely about the Scottish snow too. Isn't it weird the way songs develop a life of their own? I regard You Raise Me Up similarly. (Note the melodic borrowings!) Sometimes a song grow legs and there's nothing we can do to stop it! People own it fo what ever reason.

Austin does an outstanding rendition of "Unchained Melody" at 'Tim's 6th Birthday Bash' - even more so since later on Tim says that the keyboard was playing it higher than it should have been. It was filmed live by an audience member and is just jaw-dropping: ua-cam.com/video/l8E-G_UAj3s/v-deo.htmlsi=4Gv56JxwT5XRWXH7. Thanks for playing this one & your comments.

Austin has an amazing voice, I hope he can continue to produce and find his way. He was an integral part of Homefree and rounded them off perfectly. Homefree is a brilliant Al Capella group perhaps one of the best. Their vocals combined are just superb. My playlist of full of Homefree, perfect driving music.
