- The Hawker Siddeley Harrier is one of the most iconic vehicles of the Royal Air Force - and one of the very few aircraft capable of vertical/short takeoff and landing operations. During the Cold War era it basically had only one counterpart - the Soviet Yak-38 strike aircraft. It took British engineers almost ten years to get it ready for production, but it was all worth it: in the end, the Harrier became one of the symbols of the technological might of the United Kingdom.

@@Ranjuw Ok, I am still in mid teirs but when I reach high teirs I will enjoy that! :)
Hopefully the Sea Harrier will come. Since you spoke about the Falklands.
oh it's definitely coming, maybe even soon, as well as the AV-8B. I expect Gaijin to basically do the same thing with them as they did with the GR.1: introduce powerful missile systems onto a less-than-desirable airframe to "balance" it. I imagine this would be a "good" way for high-performance all-aspect missiles to be added, especially the AIM-9L. That and the A-4 Skyhawk.
From an argentine, what a beauty aircraft the Sea Harrier. Back there we fought the last war between gentlemen. No hard feelings or rancour mate, perhaps just perhaps, one day we could talk about the sovereignty of Malvinas in the mainwhile, let's enjoy these beautys aircrafts (and backstorys). Salute!
And no sea harrier was shot down in air-to-air, so that part of the video isn't quite right.
Check out these K:D ratios for one RN SQDN.
Sea Harrier 801 SQDN RN - 1980s. In terms of supremacy = vs. Phantom 25:1 superiority - vs. F14 = 40:1 - vs. F15 = 3:1 (That's overall as a SQN not the top guys alone) - some guys kill F-15s at 25:1
Look up "Sharkey" ward's interview with Ken Griffiths on YT, or Cdr. Sharkey Ward's book too.
Also they didn't use VIFFING at all in the Falklands. That's just a bit of psychology.
@@DarkpowderUK sharkey ward is pretty cool although hes quite a controversial figure. The video was right in that no harriers were lost to enemy air, and although the Argentines only had rear aspect missiles, the Lema's that the UK were using were only ever fired from rear aspect as well, so it wasnt really all the missile doing the work there
Wait there is a sea harrier?!

Harrier and Puma pilots were regular guests, so much so that when I mentioned I hoped to have a Christmas tree for the soldiers away from home but there was no such tree in Belize, a Puma pilot then mentioned that there were such trees in Guatemala but he would have to sneak across the border at night to get one. True Falklands story about Steve brown's Harrier:
When Steve brown was land his Harrier on the Atlantic Conveyor he set the nozzles to 27° whilst landing.
Soon he realised how close his tail was to the pole at the end of the ship. So he moved forward which made it worst. His mistake was that he forgot to set the nozzles to 90° and he soon realised that. He then pushed it to 90° but as he tried to land the nose flopped over the side bringing the plane with it. "That's the end of that airplane" said (Can't remember his name) from the main deck. It looked as if he was going to smash straight into the water, but just then Steve Brown (thinking quickly) pushed the throttle to 100/WEP and managed to pull the 21,000lb jet up away from being lost and (name not remembered) looked from the deck amazed even though it seemed the aircraft had tipped over the side. Steve Brown then turned vertical landing off and flew away from the Atlantic Conveyor with little fuel left. He later landed at Hermes.
It’s an experience to see one take off luckily for me with my service in the American military and my current jobs I’ve been able to see some
Me and him use the same thing because he made it and I just watch videos on it
Are you going to apologize?
My favorite jet in the world. Love this plane.
@Eddzward to Overrated, this unique British jet is underrated asf and also maybe the grandfather of Vertical TakeOff and Landing (VTOL) Jets,Too OP I mean A-10 for Americans will go BRRRRT,BUT for British the Harrier will go “drink tea and fly up and forward”.
@Eddzward point is these 2 are Balanced OP Wise BUT the only difference is Harrier Retired and A-10 is active so GG in that.
Same, but I stopped playing it bc I got very busy
You forgot the part where it is to expensive to fly
yup
Good, screw GR1 pilots
@SoleFox I think he meant IRL, it was hella expensive to produce
They harrier is by far my favorite plane. The vtol works on helipads and the weapon loadouts make it ideal for ground pounding, if done right you can refuel and rearm at the helipad and be back into combat in around a minute at a time. Great vehicles. Definitely worth a shot trying them!
i did not know that, thanks
Also you can cap a point in Ground RB and Sim if you land properly
I remember back in the late 80’s the Pentagon was having my squadron do “Run-in’s” as I called it, on hostile to the US, military bases. We would turn directly at the base and begin identifying any and everything visible to then “Ultra Modern” surveillance equipment mounted on our aircraft. We would brake off our “Run-in’s” at the 10 nm line and reset out over the ocean to have another go until we had the information we wanted. I remember on more than one instance Harriers coming to our aide driving off well armed Mig fighters who had attached themselves to our wings in hope to force us to land. We knew they were well armed because the first thing they did was to pull up even with our cockpit and slowly roll away so that we got a full close-up view of the bottom side of their wings. Then they would circle around and re-form up on us. Of course in the spirit of US peaceable intentions, we were UNARMED. LOL
Yall neglected to add that the majority of why Harriers saw such success in the Falklands is because of their armament: AIM-9Ls.
i love it!!!!! great video, also a big thx to mister Grant for the great narrating

aim9L used by who?
@@ofekk213 by the Harriers, main reason of how the Brits won air supremacy.
As far as i'm aware during the Falkland's war every single one of the pilots said that it was a dream to fly. If there were problems there would have been a few shot down by enemies but the only 10 that were lost were outside of engagements which is the only problems they had. They used AIM-9L's and they worked great for sure!
@@FalconWarThunder true but still the harriers we’re hard to land vtol and small British carriers made it worse so the aim-9l really help there success in that war

Me: Yeah im gonna have to stop you there-
Some missinformation. No Harrier performed VFFING in 1982, they fought as they were trained and slowing down during air combat makes you easy target. They fought dog fighting in normal maneuvers, the few air to air combats Argentine Daggers and Mirage III gained first shoot due their speed advantage but lost energy and their missiles failed due poor reliability of the old missiles then the British pilots outmaneuver them and fired the Limas.
British pilots were trained with outdated sidewinders so they fired the 9Ls from the 6 as usual. The advantage they got was the the Limas had a higher reliability with new seeker heads and electronics, so unlike Argentine 9Bs and Saffirs they didn't lock on the sun, didn't lost targets doing high G evasion and could be launched from farther.
Only 1 Mirage IIIC was lost to air combat. Fighter pilots were ordered to not merged in turn fights against Sea Harriers and Sea Harriers avoided Mirages coming hot supersonic and high staying out of their range, waiting 4 minutes and then proceeding, since the Mirages couldn't stay in the area due lack of air refueling.
All other fighter losses except 2 Daggers, were fighter bombers, and 65% of them were lost to Royal Navy anti air missiles.
