  • Olympic champion Nastia Liukin joined the Taylor's this week to discuss rebuilding herself after having success at such a young age. She talks about the pressure that comes with competing at the highest level of a sport centered around perfection, the years of trying to find her identity following her "retirement", and why she started her annual competition called the Nastia Liukin Cup.

I just rewatched the 2007 Visa Championships and it looks like Nastia’s being tortured. She was clearly injured and her dad kept making her compete. I just feel so bad because it’s not like she’s going to come forward and talk about her experience but you know she knows what went down in a lot of those scenarios. She’s in a very difficult spot because she’d never disrespect her dad even though there was probably abuse going on behind the scenes. She was probably mad at Maddie Larson for outing the fact her dad like slammed her against a wall once. And the fact all those gymnasts were starving most of the time.
In Nastia’s defense it was never right of them to compare her to Shawn Johnson. That being said Shawn was happier in the sport and smiled at competitions when Nastia was miserable and looked like she didn’t want to be there to begin with.
I just hope she finds peace and a love for something greater than gymnastics. And some joy and happiness in another passion in life.

And her father has the USSR mentality of a coach in that time. You can’t compare then and now. Mental health was not a concern back then

Why wasn't she asked about being on the Board of USAG and helping them funnel money out of the organization so they wouldn't have to declare it when they filed for bankruptcy? Or when she gaslit Mattie Larson on television by saying her father never coached when her father was clearly one of the Worlds Team coaches in 2011, on which Mattie Larson competed.

It would not surprise me if there were topics off limits. Obviously I have no proof of that, not stating it as a fact, just saying it would not at all come as a surprise to me if that was the case.
I actually met Nastia when she was on the post-Olympics tour in 2012. VIP passes included a meet & greet with everyone on the tour (the gold-medal-winning women's team in 2012 and lots of others who didn't make the team that year). The others were SO nice - McKayla Maroney even did a "Not Impressed" picture with me when I met her during the autograph session after the show for VIPs, which she was not obligated to do. Alicia Sacramone was so incredibly sweet to me, made sure I got the photo with her that I wanted, Aly Raisman was waving to me when I held up a sign during the show, they were just really nice. Nastia was not.
Which sucked. I try to remember that people have "off" days, people have bad days, people don't feel well on occasion, and you cannot (should not) judge someone based on ONE single interaction. However, she was being paid to be there. Being paid not only to perform during the show, but also to sign autographs and interact with fans after the show for the session for VIP ticket holders. She was MUCH more interested in talking to one of the guys from the men's team while she was sitting at the table than she was in interacting with fans. Everyone else, including Gabby Douglas who was also the new Olympic All-Around champion and thus on Nastia's level in that regard, was very kind and interactive.
Something about her rubbed me the wrong way. Same with others I talked to about how she acted.

@@michellebaker6302 the worst part? I’ve heard this story time and time again. I’ve even experienced this myself.
It’s exactly the reason why I will never have sympathy for her, nor will I stop bringing up things she has done which have had far reaching impact in this sport.
Not saying people can’t change, but to constantly make those around you and those who look up to you feel poorly, and to then help silence victims of abuse is something I do not take lightly.

you have to be a complete idiot to believe that she had ANYTHING to do with MONEY within the organization, she’s a commentator and that’s as far as it goes, she holds no power at all. and yes her father coached the team but he never coached mattie larson specifically, it’s VERY important to do proper research rather than just listen to interviews

and on top of that, even if her father did something, WHY ON EARTH would it be Nastias responsibility to speak on it?

@@yooowhatsgood why the hell would she say Mattie was lying then?
