  • Everyone always sees the highlights: Worked at Goldman Sachs, Went to Stanford Business School, Raised $5M for my Startup, but what they don't see are the humble beginnings. When I was three years old, my Mom and I moved to the states and we had absolutely nothing. Over time, I learned to embrace my unique Immigrant background, and use it as my super power.
In this video I explain all the steps that I used to turn my difficult life experience, into unique skills that will help any immigrant excel in life, no matter what their goals may be.
    Specifically, I talk about:
    - My Immigrant Story
    - Deciding what you want to succeed in
    - How to "Play The Game"
    - How to break down barriers using your unique background
    - How to change the rules of "The Game" to make it more accessible

From one of your dumpling friends, I moved to US by myself and everyone has similar background will be able to relate. I have to know how to navigate life, develop the grid and resilience. My beginning in US was so difficult, lost count how many times I cried, but hey that is life all about. One thing I knew I had to turn my weaknesses to my strengths. Easy to say, but it is doable. @jayhoovy, when your account hits 1m sub, don’t forget us.

Awww - I'm so proud of you for what you've already accomplished Cebi! Moving to the US alone must have been TERRIFYING.
Won't forget my day one supporters if I ever do hit that crazy high of a sub count! Cheers Cebi!

John, I appreciate the direction you're taking with your channel and the steps you're sharing. It's refreshing to see your journey documented, and I'm cheering you on.
However, I have a slight disagreement regarding the notion that coming from humble backgrounds is an "advantage." I understand what you mean by it, but as another Asian kid, I can't overlook the immense pressure, duties, responsibilities, and shame we were burdened with from a young age. Many of us had difficult childhoods that we didn't deserve, and it took years of therapy for us to even begin processing those experiences.
That being said, I'm thrilled to see more Asian American creators like yourself who have done their own inner work. It's important to acknowledge that not everyone is able to overcome the struggles they faced in childhood. Romanticizing the poverty struggle can overshadow the fact that many individuals are crushed by it, while only a few manage to break through.
While I understand your message about using your difficult childhood as a driving force to succeed, I believe it's crucial for people to create an ideal environment for their children before becoming parents. This way, their kids won't have to spend years in therapy recovering from the challenges they faced.
Nevertheless, I want to encourage you to continue creating content. You have a talent for it, and I look forward to seeing more from you.

I started at Goldman (not IB) then Facebook from a state school and did Booth for the exact same reasons. While I'm not an immigrant kid, this video resonated extremely hard. I'm finally doing my own thing and, interestingly, getting in front of investors at this point in my life has been far, far easier than getting that first job from the non-target background was. I'd imagine this was similar for you but don't want to assume.
I'm glad I came across your channel. What you're doing is awesome and I highly believe in the way you're going about doing it. I want to do something similar with building in public, though my startup is in the healthcare space so not sure how I'm going to walk the tightrope on being professional/trustworthy to strangers while being vulnerable/authentic/actually myself on here.

    • @jayhoovy
      @jayhoovy  9 місяців тому +2

Proud of you Adam! I only use the lens of the immigrant kid as it's my story, but I have a deep belief that we're all the same (we're all just humans trying to figure out wtf we're doing!!!).
Building in public in Healthcare will indeed be tricky - not just from a vulnerability vs. confidence perspective for your patients, but also from a compliance (HIPA etc) perspective. I'd start with maybe solely documenting your success (confidence builders), and then over time, figure out how to share the true, full and authentic journey.
Let me know how it goes Adam! Keep in touch!

Ha! I really wish I was always this positive in my own feels - I still struggle a ton with depression and anxiety - I think I just keep trying my best. I will think on a video of how I’ve gotten to where I am confidence wise for ya! Punchline is likely: I kept persisting through failure

What's great about being an immigrant is that you see the poor perspective you came from and you use it in the rich environment you immigrated to.

Congrats for taking advantage of the opportunities you've got! I agree that being the underdog is really an advantage, and I also did Kumon as a child haha!
At the same time, at least you could play the game in order to change the rules (spoke the language, access to education, etc), what should not be taken for granted.
While reinforcing positive attitude is great, privilege is always relative to someone else's story. That's what I also learned in my MBA process hehe. Greetings from Brazil.
