Amazing how UA-cam makes these recommendations. I fished Peconic bay over 40yrs ago. Sold my boat in 1985. Been on party boats ever since. If I survive the Covid quarantine, I think a center console with fish finder & trolling motor are in my future.
You should try the same tackle in Huntington harbor right in front of the light house out on a kayak. When the tide comes in it disturbs the substrate which releases detritus and the porgies feast on it.
we started using a trolling motor 2 years ago and feel silly that all the prior years that we never did..its been such a fantastic tool to our arsenal..
Fish for scup in the west end of CCC,with light gear,an 8'6" salmon /steelhead rod, baitcaster throwing a steel shot filled plastic bobber, 6 ' leader and a clouser with a piece of red yarn tied in at the bend which is dipped in a plastic jar containing chopped squid. It's a blast, good for macks in the east end as well as schoolies.
These are amazing fish. Not too fishy in taste, but also not too mild. They also give an unexpected fight that makes you wonder what is on the other side of the line. Biggest porgies I ever caught happened on Block Island - insane jumbos.
John, word to the wise...been using a trolling motor for years and 1 issue I have had...I recommend that you use some type of support for the motor head. It will stop the head bouncing as your running. Will save you some headaches down the road by avoiding the head unit becoming lose from bouncing and vibration.
So many people have this fishfinder, including myself. You should do a product review/tutorial on how to use this thing. So many settings it's kind of overwhelming...
Yes. It caught 3/4 of our keepers opening day, and that was my first day using it. I didn't even have a good handle on the autopilot or cruise control yet. Seriously if I knew on the first trip what I know now (9 days later), we would have had more fish.
I have tried cruise and autopilot for em but mostly prefer manual control bc I drift alot of backcountry wetlands and as you know theres nothing straight about those drifts.
Hey John, a thought about your pinfish. Almost every time there’s an east swell and a south wind, I find strange fish washing up on the beach, or pushed in close to shore. I found a few strange species washed up on the beach this past week or two. A pinfish is a very cool catch, good work.
Your Minn Kota Riptide Terrova Trolling Motor i-Pilot is worth more than your whole ⛵ I hope your sponsor have it to you. Great videos for the common sense low budget angler.
11:51 I caught a pinfish at a public Nassau county park in September this year; was very surprised to see one as I haven't seen one since I was a kid in FL as well. May be a small consequence of global climate change. Some of my friends have been catch all kinds of tropicals this year.
Hi John. My name is Juan and I live in Florida I do a lot of snook fishing with buck tails so am traveling to New York City the week of Memorial Day. And will like to ask if you can share a good spot that I can go for striped bass. So I can use my buck tails thanks
I live 100 miles from NYC and try to avoid going in that direction. I know they do well on the beaches of western LI at that time. I would suggest calling Bernies B&T in Sheepshead Bay. They know their stuff and the local waters of that area.
You are a real professional fisherman. Do you ever fish the south shore around Jones Beach area? It seams we really have to hunt to find a spot on the inside and we only get shorts. I think everyone goes outside to the wrecks for larger ones but the bite is sporadic at best. Any comments?
Hey John how are you. I have to say I’m a really big fan of your fishing. It amazes me how you know just so much about fishing. I am from NJ there isn’t much porgies around me. Me and my uncle love catching porgies they are great fighting and great eating. I know this is a long shot but do you know a good place to fish on shore surf casting for porgies. I don’t mind the travel. I rather be on land with my uncle rather than be on a party boat especially In the current situation we are in. Please if you can recommend a place I would greatly appreciate it.
love the vid, but man i had to cut is short, you were tossing back just too many good porgies.. Im watching delicious dinners being tossed back into the ocean and eventually couldnt take it anymore!! lol
Question please. I usually fish for porgies off party boats. Usually using!6-8 oz sinkers on high-low rigs. How might I use this skinner jigs in this application? I expect I’d still need the heavy sinker to stay straight up-down to minimize boat tangles?
John, you don't appear to be jigging up and down, you're not retrieving and you are not drifting since you are "anchored", what is the action or is the jig just sitting at the bottom?
The motor was hardly working, and still showed full battery after 3 hours. We did all day trips near the Fishers Island Race last fall anchored for blackfish with a 25-ft CC, and it had no trouble holding even when the current picked up.
2 size 27 duracell AGM batteries, as this is a 24V motor. These are dedicated to the motor, and there's a separate battery and circuit for everything else.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks John, I just received a 55 lb thrust trolling motor. I am going to use it on my canoe. I want to find a battery that will give me the longest charge for navigating the back bays out there.
No, because there are two separate circuits. One for the trolling motor that has two batteries, and one for the outboard, bilge, lights, fishfinder that has one battery. Good question BTW.
John, what kind of chum were you using? I love catching porgies, especially jumbos like that. I've read your "Fishing for Summer Flounder" book cover to cover, just bought your fluke fishing course, & am looking forward to digging into that & taking my fluke fishing to the next level. Thank you for all the valuable information you share with us.
pinfish here in new York, think thats somethin, well people started catching Dungeness crabs as well, clearly someone had been dumping live Dungees into north atlantic waters. Which is terrible on one end for obvious invasive species reasons, BUT!!!!! wholly heck can you imagine the being able to catch dungees on the east coast!!! and what they would evolve to taste like in these waters!!! holly heck!!! No doubt they could very well hurt the domestic lobsters populations since their so quick to eat anything. but man..
PORGIES!!! Hey John, how are you? Have you ever double or triple hooked your line with porgies? Have you ever used cut clams for bait? Take care, have fun fishing 😊😊😊
Great video John. I wish I could get to the Peconic. I'm not surprised about that pinfish. I saw your buddies-Jigging Jerks say they thought they saw a tarpon. I definitely saw a lookdown fish en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lookdown last year in October when I was fishing for blackfish here on the Eastend. My college Marine Bio professor said he would not be surprised if we started seeing speckled trout soon...
Wow that trolling motor really does it's job.

Another great video. Those were some Giant porgies. They taste great and fight very good especially on a light outfit.
we started using a trolling motor 2 years ago and feel silly that all the prior years that we never did..its been such a fantastic tool to our arsenal..
killing me, john, i haven't caught 27 keepers this entire season, and ours only have to be 17 and 18 inches. great fishing, i'm so jealous.
My favorite fishing channel. Thank you for taking the time.
i love that boat setup with the aluminum hull center console
Thanks. It's a 1974 Starcraft.

YES. I fish the salt pond for scup all the time in block island. Absolutely beautiful place.

i cant believe you got a pinfish here in new York!! in may least of all

Good advice. Thanks. I'm going to try and figure something out. My friend had some sort of support on his boat.

Have you tried recording a track and then letting the motor repeat it? I'm hoping to try that next time out.
Porgies are good eating and fun to catch. Thanks for sharing.
These videos are so relaxing.
Fun fish to catch and tastes great, nice vid!
11:50 I don’t think it’s a pinkish because they normally don’t get that big but if it is one it’s a really big one

Pinfish where in very heavy around 2013 on the south shore. Mixed in with king fish. havent seen them since.
Check out nz snapper, look really similar and very closely related but have big jaws and get to 35lb
And they love Gulp!

A size 27 Duracell AGM

I don't fish that area, but it makes sense that this time of year the larger ones would be on structure like wrecks.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I wish you would give it a try. It's very challenging in the bays.
Nice catches great video 👍🏾👌🏾
ya the other day i got a pretty good amount of porgie keepers one was 17 inches!
Caught a mess of pinfish on a winter sea bass trip out of manasquan around the new year.

Nicely narrated by Ray Romano
Nah EliasVFishing sounds like Ray, not John
Someone said he sounds like Howard Stern. I’m inclined to agree.
Celtic quest also caught a pinfish a few days ago
What knot do you use to tie your leader to main line?
John...Have you ever jigged a Crippled Herring for porgies and sea bass?
No.
Hey John what does an individual have to do to go out and fish with you
Can these jigs be used for Surfcasting?
Thank you for all your work.
Absolutely! Here's a vid using them for blackfish from the beach. ua-cam.com/video/jlwuFd1yRoE/v-deo.html
Beautiful Porgies. Nice chum pot. I assume that's a killie trap, but no longer needed due to gulp.
Correct. It's been a long time since I've thought about gathering live bait for fluke.
love the vid, but man i had to cut is short, you were tossing back just too many good porgies.. Im watching delicious dinners being tossed back into the ocean and eventually couldnt take it anymore!! lol
Hey John skinner where was this video shot ?
Peconic Bay
@@JohnSkinnerFishing nice not too far from where I fished on Sunday down by Raritan Bay did pretty well over 40 porgies and a few stripers
Hey john just want to say I like all urs fishing video I’m a new subscriber keep up the work 🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
I noticed you only used a single hook.. why didnt you use two hooks? Just curious, because I usually use double hooks
what is that stuff floating on the top of the water?
Hey Skinner, thanks. What make and model is this boat?
Just found out it's a 1974 Starcraft from a previous reply. dig the vids dude!
Hey john just heard you were at 3 bells the other day. Any videos from you fishing in niantic bay?
It's coming. They are awesome guys there! I didn't even had a rod with me so they lent me one and I caught a few of those Niantic fish.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing My home waters. Let me know if you need anything on this side.
Going out on a charter for them to tomorrow! Fun fishing
Hi John, what size of hook for 3/4.oz? I've been your (1/0 oz) jigs for couple yrs now, love it quality product
5/0 Gamakatsu 604 hook
What was the silver jigging reel in the video? Looked like it had a west coast surface iron lure tied to it.
Maxel Hybrid 20
Mr John . Where is the best place porgy in New York
Gulp chum works great for porgies
Question please. I usually fish for porgies off party boats. Usually using!6-8 oz sinkers on high-low rigs. How might I use this skinner jigs in this application? I expect I’d still need the heavy sinker to stay straight up-down to minimize boat tangles?
On a partyboat you might be better off staying with the standard stuff if it's crowded. I'm able to use 3/4-ounce here because of the thin 10# braid.
Great video! Very informative and you’ve got some great video shots.
I catch pinfish all the time in the south
John, you don't appear to be jigging up and down, you're not retrieving and you are not drifting since you are "anchored", what is the action or is the jig just sitting at the bottom?
Just enough weight to put it on the bottom. No jigging.
Hello John, what size battery do you ise for the trolling motor?
Two Group 27 AGM batteries.
I've always fished for Stripped Bass. Never Scup. Can You make some recommendations. Location, time of year, how deep? Thank You
Next video. The North Fork of LI is good this time of year. Squid is my preferred bait.
nice jacket Skinner.....you got a brand and model number sir?
I used to eat those when I was a kid. They are tasty. I dont think I ever caught any that big though.
It looks like at 16 minutes you started scoping out , does that effect your porgy fishing or is that only when using buck tails ?
Good question. I don't want to scope out far. This was OK. More than that and maybe I'd need to go up to 1 ounce.
Nice video and the trolling motor anchor feature is cool. How much current can that motor handle till you have to actually anchor?
The motor was hardly working, and still showed full battery after 3 hours. We did all day trips near the Fishers Island Race last fall anchored for blackfish with a 25-ft CC, and it had no trouble holding even when the current picked up.
That's amazing looks like it worked like a charm. Keep up the great work on your shows.
Love your videos. They very fishing educational. I’m in Brooklyn my. When is porgy season in Ny
It opened May 1.
How do you attach your main line to your leader?
barrel swivel. Palomar knot on the braid. Clinch on the leader.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks for replying

Hello John, is that a Starcraft aluminum boat your using?
Yes. 1974
@@JohnSkinnerFishing , thanks John, your my idol so I bought a similar boat.
That's the same thing I said last year when I got a pin fish off watch hill ! Warming waters maby?
global warming
Hey John, what kind of battery are you using on your trolling motor? Group size? Amps per Hour? Thanks!

An old one. I was wondering same thing. Starcraft is my guess.
@@jimgreenfield1320 you may be correct.
I was wondering the same
John, With the trolling motor and fish finder etc. Did your have to upgrade you battery system?
Fishfinder no. The trolling motor is an 80-pound thrust 24 volt, and uses two dedicated size 27 batteries. So there are 3 batteries on the boat.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Ah, So no extra draw on the main battery?
No, because there are two separate circuits. One for the trolling motor that has two batteries, and one for the outboard, bilge, lights, fishfinder that has one battery. Good question BTW.

Peconics
_This place is incredible remember here in Brazil, congratulations, beautiful video._

I like a swivel on my line to keep twist out
Great video Mr. Skinner! You didn't mention it in you narrative but are you running a 24v or 36v system with your trolling motor?
It's an 80# thrust 24 volt. I've got two size 27 batteries and a charger in the console.
Do you ever use multiple hooks or jigs for Porgy?
No, because I enjoy fishing with the single lightweight jig.
