Just watch his face during this concert. You can tell he has deep affection for this music and he obviously loved doing the New Year's Concert. I also get the feeling that he realizes that he won't be conducting much of this music again. One moment stands out to me: when they are playing Music of the Spheres Waltz and the orchestra gets to the main melody after the introduction, Karajan almost breaks down in tears as the music swells. Even after all those years of hearing and conducting this music, the beauty and poignancy of it hits him anew. (After watching this I realize that's what this video is! It happens at 1:29.)
We lost the concept of beauty with the death of the old dinosaurs. Karajan was like the very Last Kaiser of the old Great Empire, and the orchestra's devotion for him is touching.

Herbert von Karajan´s einziges Néu Jahrskonzert das er mit Wiener Philharmoniker gemacht hat und trotz das er da Gesundheitlich Probleme hatte hat er sich nehmen lassen das Konzert auf das er sich so sehr gefreut hatte zu dirigieren! Nach dem großen Krach den er mit seinem langjährigen Orchester den Berliner Philharmoniker hatte er wollte damals die Klarinettistin Sabine Meyer haben wollte aber die Philharmoniker dagegen waren!
Ja, der Sphärenklängen-Walzer von Josef Strauß sucht seinesgleichen, es stimmt eigentlich alles: Klang, Rhythmus, Tempomodifikationen, Agogik. Ich glaube, man kann es nicht besser dirigieren, wie HvK es tat bei jenem denkwürdigen Neujahrskonzert. Also, man hört immer von diktatorischem Gebaren Karajans. Jedoch ist das Orchester ja auch nicht gerade pflegeleicht zu handhaben, die Musiker des BPhO haben es ihm manchmal nicht leicht gemacht. Aber er war der einzige, der das Orchester richtig beherrschte!

They were talented in different ways.They can`t be compared. Both equally great.

Sphärenklänge is the OG of lyrical non-lyricized music of the Romantic era. Beautiful waltz, am working on it now.
