"I thought the St Vincent cover was pretty good. They got some details right about the sound and the drumming especially. I was impressed." - Steve Albini
don't know much about st. vincent, know a lot about albini. that being said, this cover does more than justice to the original, it's refreshing to hear it being treated so well. pay no mind to the albini purists ripping on it, some of them are probably 17 years old and found out about him two months ago anyway.
powerful! my first exposure to st. vincent was the vid "marry me" where she's lying on the bed w/ acoustic guitar. this performance makes me appreciate her a lot more. also: love michael pollan on moog. he too has many talents...
So how about this (for all the haters)?: Big fan of Big Black. Annie?......I've always had a lot of respect for her talent, but often times end up wanting to like some of her work more than I actually do. I DO love a lot of hard/noisy/heavy/scratchy/grinding/punchy/"difficult" music (I have this on a playlist of mine that includes Neurosis, Uzi, Bad Brains, Einsturzende Neubauten, Soulfly, the Melvins, Last Exit, etc.) And yes, I hear all the comments about the bass on this, and yes also, the bass on the original is awesome. But guess what? Even though I'm a bass player myself.............I absolutely freaking LOVE this. It's straight up brilliant and beautiful, and completely takes me in. Love, love, love it. Thank you Annie, and well done.
Since everyone is (rightfully) commenting about annie I just want to say that the drummer is a monster during this set. Like, Big Black drum lines are supposed to be unnatural and he just kills it. Really impressive.
I met this girl, Annie Clark at this time, while merching for a show in Athens, Oh. Had I known, I'd bought all her wine that night. Pretty fucking amazing cover.
from "I am Steve Albini, ask me anything." Redditt, 7 years ago "I thought the St Vincent cover was pretty good. They got some details right about the sound and the drumming especially. I was impressed." Me: My teeth hurt, and not in a good way.
Not gonna lie... What a great cover. This song needs this kind of respect, just considering if you listen to the original record now it sounds like it was recorded in a bin
? So... I was watching the audience, half way through a security guard escorted someone with an ice-pack held to their face to the front row. Cool. That is the REVERSE thing that happens at every show i have ever been to. !
This is just ridiculous. A beautiful talented woman with guitar covering Big Black and going all out... with each passing second i'm falling more in love haha :P
This particular audience did; the gig was a sort of ten year anniversary celebration of Michael Azerrad's 'Our Band Could Be Your Life', with 14 bands/artists covering songs by the 13 bands profiled in the book. Should give it a read if you haven't. It's a serious classic!
@brubinstein1 Your efforts to seek out negative comments to react towards are appreciated. I take it that for people describing St Vincent as a GENIUS or GODDESS no further explanation is required

Of course he did not mentioned the bass ...it lacks a certain type of disgust and intoxication which few humans are capable of handling ...
After the show, Annie said (in a Spin interview) that her hands were shaking and she wanted to kill someone due to all of the exhilaration.

i love st vincent but, respectfully- are you ai?
@@norbertchiselchest4810 the comment being from 12 years ago should tell you: no! this is a real person
Woah. Never expected her to cover Big Black.
+Tooki It caught me off guard at first but the more I thought about it the more it made sense haha

She covers the Big Black holy grail..the behemoth..and she does it awsome..love her
This is amazing, and I am an old Big Black fan, who has all their stuff on vinyl, Good job St Vincent!!!
It's almost impossible to see her becoming better, better and better. And there she is. She never ceases to surprise me.
this is just unbelievable, she's (they) rip it up so well. St. Vincent and Big Black forever!!!
I´m in Love, one of my fav artists covers one of the most underrated bands ever...Epic
One of my fav artists of today covering one of my fav artists of the 80's. She's an amazing talent.
I love that this exists
This is the best thing that has ever happened.
i have never seen a performance like this ever .... truly mind blowing...i am a fan now
What a show...truly a privilege to be there. Well worth all the trouble it took to make it happen.
St. Vincent never fails to amaze.
jesus christ jesus christ jesus christ this is too amazing
powerful! my first exposure to st. vincent was the vid "marry me" where she's lying on the bed w/ acoustic guitar. this performance makes me appreciate her a lot more. also: love michael pollan on moog. he too has many talents...
michael pollan the author? i don't think anyone named michael pollan played in st vincent
that's shahzad ismaily. i still laughed at the idea though.
amazing
theres literally not a flaw in this cover except you can barely hear the bass man omg i love this so much
Best cover I've heard
Merci pour cette INCROYABLE reprise........
I've seen her twice and I am still waiting for this cover on stage...
Wow, the drummer is much more lively than Big Black's!
Roland was always a bit of a dud socially…
lol yea i love big blacks drummer
I have two clips on UA-cam I always come back to. This one and Cookie Monster and the mystery box. Damn, she can shred!
Thank god for UA-cam existing so that we can all watch this
Thanks St. Vincent for this Rock'n Rolla tribute! This song should live on forever!
This is the most awesome thing I've heard recently! Can't get it out of my head!
So how about this (for all the haters)?:

Why was I worried that this would not be any good?! Annie does it just like all of the other songs she performs: perfectly!!
That's a very good and respectful cover - like that a lot. Might have to check out more of her stuff
Nothing like listening to Kerosene! I wish Annie would make a studio version of this just for in-fidelity's sake!
I didn't even know who/what St Vincent was until this Big Black cover.
I'm a massive big black fan and I really enjoyed this cover - respect.
AT LONG LAST YOU HAVE ARRIVED ANNIE - I ANXIOUSLY AND PATIENTLY AWAIT YOUR INSTRUCTIONS..........................................
One word----INCREDIBLE,
Since everyone is (rightfully) commenting about annie I just want to say that the drummer is a monster during this set. Like, Big Black drum lines are supposed to be unnatural and he just kills it. Really impressive.
What an excellent cover! Such manic, lyric energy from everyone.
nailed it
I really hope she does some big black covers when I see her perform in Chicago. that would pretty much make my life
Pure awesomeness.
amazing performance
love it
still amazing
She is amazing!
Wow! Just wow!
AMAZING!
the two songs she chose to cove are my two favorite big black songs
That kicks ass so hard. Legit confused at some of the negative comments.
I get why people dont like it. It's definitely for edgy teens in North america
i am so happy right now
I met this girl, Annie Clark at this time, while merching for a show in Athens, Oh. Had I known, I'd bought all her wine that night. Pretty fucking amazing cover.
So badass
It's an odd scene of people slam dancing to St. Vincent. AWESOME!!
Great cover...!!
she's awesome
Very cool.
who knew St. Vincent could entertain, Rock On.
of all covers, nice Big Black! Impressive
awesome!!
In spirit, she nails it. Wonder what Albini thinks?
He thought it was "pretty good"
Ya gotta hit that bass man!
+Brad Carroll I have to agree, there's an extreme lack of it. I 'm not sure if it's because of the recording or just the performance.
+Flip Dynko Sounds like the recording...there is another version of this video on here with audio from the NPR stream and the bass is more prominent.
Glaring Omission :-(
Badly Underplayed Bass.
Otherwise Lovely Cover!
my brain just melted. when you come to seattle i
I actually like this version better than the original, especially with that clear bass and those powerful drums
Annie has mad guitar skills.
this is awesome
the Annie I love

you probably know better than steve albini
@dethnerd, She also did Bad Penny which brought the house down.
DUDE. i fucking love this woman.
I would never fucking imagine St Vincent covering big black. Nice.
Brutal.
Respect. Takes some serious nads to cover Big Black, and they hold their own. Still, I prefer the original, but would have loved to be there live.
Not gonna lie... What a great cover. This song needs this kind of respect, just considering if you listen to the original record now it sounds like it was recorded in a bin
AMEN
holy shit, i didn't expect her to do that. sick.
THIS IS SO INSANE!!
those squeaky feedback samples give me the chills... brrrrr
damn, I never got into St Vincent but they did a great job with this cover
Annie is incredible. I think she may be a genius!
A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY
?
So... I was watching the audience, half way through a security guard escorted someone with an ice-pack held to their face to the front row. Cool.
That is the REVERSE thing that happens at every show i have ever been to.
!
This is just ridiculous. A beautiful talented woman with guitar covering Big Black and going all out... with each passing second i'm falling more in love haha :P
holy FUCK
cool
I don't think her audience knows who Big Black is. She does though, and does a great job. Go Annie go. Thank you for this!!

She can do anything! What think Steve Albini about this?
I hope Albini will produce her next LP
my respect for her just tripled
holy shit this fucking pumped me up
is that nat baldwin from the dirty projectors on bass?
Back when St. Vincent was a rocker!
Didn't even know it was possible to cover Big Black. Love this.
with an actual drummer as well.
I think you might actually be hearing a Big Black influence, considering it is their song
@brubinstein1 Your efforts to seek out negative comments to react towards are appreciated. I take it that for people describing St Vincent as a GENIUS or GODDESS no further explanation is required
St. Vincent insights a Mosh-Pit... She amazes me!
Moshing at a St.Vincent show, something I never though id see.
Bad ass
Unbelievably fucking cool.
Too bad about the sound quality. Sounds like it could be a great cover.
First time I saw this I was like, woa who is this skinny dude? Then I figured out it was this Vincent chick! Pretty cool. Followed her ever since.
I hear a little bit of a Sonic Youth influence...could be the effects you've thrown into the mix. Yeah, that's it. Sounds great.
