Trent on this performance: “One of the greatest moments of my life was standing onstage next to David Bowie while he sang ‘Hurt’ with me. I was outside of myself, thinking, ‘I’m standing onstage next to the most important influence I’ve ever had, and he’s singing a song I wrote in my bedroom.’ It was just an awesome moment.”

I know what kind of person Reznor is. He's the kind that can't be happy no matter how amazing he is. He got a little break from that during this performance. Otherwordly beautiful. I'm not a fan of egocentric living but THIS is definitely the way to do it, if one is inclined.

@@kurdtinchainsThis is from a show during a joint U.S. tour segment that David Bowie & Nine Inch Nails did together in 1995. Each night both bands played; in the transition there were some "crossover" songs and this is an example. A good song is complemented when other notable artists sing it with the passion that it was written with. I've not seen this version, and David Bowie is the perfect, perfect cherry on top. I have to admit, while this is an excellent song of it's own merit, seeing Johnny Cash sing it the way he did - knowing his history - broke me. It's as if the song has come full circle, the way Trent intended it. It's the perfect evolution of this song: Trent as the young beginning genius artist, David as the middle-aged experienced artist, and Johnny Cash as the dying, understanding regretful artist. Each version carries it's own individual story, and yet they're all the same. By the Gods. It's Brilliant.

He was mid sixties at the time. Spending my mother's money trying to make a Christian album and he intended to put this song on it. I waited until he got his "final cut" to explain who originally wrote the song and the subject matter (heroin)...lets just say he still hates me to this day.

Totally agree! It’s just a bit off kilter, and it colors the melody so beautifully. Ethereal I think is the word for it.

Trent can't believe his luck. keeps pinching himself, "is that David Bowie over there? Shit he nails the harmonies so well."

To me, music is a painting. You have the backing, the tone, the structure... One could look at the colors on the album cover and feel the match for the songs. Then there's Bowie, who brings an entirely different palette of vibrance and inherent darkness. The choruses take a turn from this dismal spiraling despair, and replace it with a feeling of letting go and peace in a sort of death, or change.
This was amazing to hear and thank you for sharing.

David Bowie's harmonies just take this song to a different level.
