- The side of nursing we don't typically talk about and that's nurses bullying nurses and nursing eating their young. It's more common than we think and it can be so hurtful. So we're going to talk about it today!

One of the things I've learned is we have to speak up. If you're working in an environment where speaking up is not encouraged and bullying is tolerated, it's time to go. The world is your stage.

Agreed but administration is loyal to staff SOMETIMES and most times in my experience it get YOU in trouble smh horrible

Speaking up, depending on just how toxic the culture of the unit, can not help sometimes. It may make it worse by retaliating. Now u know.. Nip it in the bud in future. Also good to know in labor law, if a manager knows that a charge person is bullying you after you reported to the manager, and it gets worse, it is big NO NO and actually the hospital can be in trouble.
Otherwise there are no anti bullying laws. People can be narcissistic assholes borderline sociopathic at work. Washington state is in process of getting laws passed.

Not only do they bully other nurses, they also bully other staff in different departments.
Those nurses who bullies shouldn’t even be in that health care field. We need compassionate caring people who has empathy for everyone.
theres always one or two in every unit, and the few who choose to be their minions out of fear they will also be picked on....key is to put a poker face and mind your own business and be GOOD at your job...don't overly gloat, and secretly build yourself quietly in the background....either by obtaining more certifications, going back to school to obtain a masters/doctorates degree...you really need these useless people to keep you on your toes....you NEVER EVER want to go to a unit where you feel 100% relaxed and comfortable b/c when a crisis HITS,,,you wont be ready to fend yourself from the repercussions....always work like you did on your first day....get those SNS stimulation and norepi pumping...BE READY, keep your eyes PEELED...nobody, i mean nobody at work will have your back...you alone have your own back...
It all boils down to insecurity.

I showed up to work today (agency nurse) and a nurse refused to give up the med cart because she was holding it for another nurse, her friend, who never showed up 😂 I waited over an hour, reported that to the supervisor, then I left. ✌️ She apparently wanted me on an assignment which had 6 IV’s, 3 peg tube, and 9 accu checks…a total of 35 patients. The assignment she was on had 28 people. She wanted her friend on the easier assignment. Caught an attitude because I asked if she was ready to count. Now they’re short a nurse 😂

I told off a carer who left a dementia unit with no staff he acted like l overreacted what if there was a fire they have no capacity to get out
As a student nurse I am planning on leaving as the bullying has gone too far.
How student nurses are bulled should be talked about
I think some just figure it’s the ‘norm’ and they themselves survived it so somehow it’s acceptable. No, it isn’t.
Call them out on their behavior. Stand up for yourself.

@@ikr2377 that has nothing to do with you standing up for yourself and calling them out. They do it because they can and that's the problem. That's because they haven't gotten cursed out. It happened to me and I put them right in their place. They didn't bother me after that, and notify HR to document. You can even file a complaint and grievance for a hostile work environment with lateral violence. Trust, don't sit and take their crap. Unfortunately, it's a nasty cycle, but find your voice early in this game. Are you still there?

Thanks this is my second year.i was seriously planning to drop out at the time I made that comment .
But my university teachers/ other students supported me too stay. I'm still thinking if it happens again and I get a better opportunity I will leave but I will see how it goes.
But your right a lot of the other students have told me they snapped back at the known bully nurses then went down and emailed their tutors immediately...
Teachers even warned us as second years if we are ever asked to do something that's not right we should email them at an available opportunity...
Nurses talk about nurse bullying all the time because it affects us every day.
Our mental peace is what's most important, it pisses off when people bring their toxicity/insecurity into work to bring another human being down. That healthcare worker/patient you put down is someone's daughter,son, grandchild, sibling, friends, takes a lot of ego & narcissism to put down someone that's very important in someone's life.
I dealt with a older woman who seemed pretty cool upon my hire. We talked about our kids etc but when I was switched over to doing IV’s bc we were short staffed she was to train and supervise me in it, bc the fusion room was like her domain 💁🏽♀️ she had been there about 8+ years but for some reason could not find other staff who wanted to do it.. me being new I figured I had no choice. The min I start going there she changes! Snappy about everything, don’t do this, don’t do that, offer tea & coffee during their fusions, I go to offer a patient a drink while she’s hooking up an IV to them and she stops me mid way and says “don’t offer things while I’m hooking up an IV I could get startled and miss the vein and poke the patient “ IN FRONT OF THE PATIENT…but I’ve watched her ask patients if they wanted any refreshments while I or another person was hooking them. I asked her the patients blood pressure as she was unhooking one which we had to do after an infusion she goes don’t ask me ppls bp out loud in front of other patients bc of HIPAA.. but when she had to stay late to do a fusion bc a patient was late she was so ready to leave that she yelled to me across the room “WHATS THEIR BP?” As she stood with her coat and purse to throw their bp in EMR so she can take off and start her Friday. I yelled back “I THOUGHT WE WERENT ALLOWED TO YELL THAT IN FRONT OF OTHER PATIENTS” … instant attitude! She then decides to tell me since ur in the fusion room now u need to take ur lunch at this time. I said nawl I eat breakfast so I’m not hungry by this time. I usually will eat by like 3pm. She insisted that I did. So at this point I’m pushing back … no I’m not hungry. She then goes well im gonna have to talk to the “supervisor” about that and im like that’s cool. And I continued what I was doing. Her and the supervisor were close friends outside of work both had been there bout a decade and would go to each other kids sports functions. So naturally it was biased. I didn’t stay there too much longer and they also were short handed again in the fusion room and that lady is the reason why. I honestly think she chases off anyone who comes to protect her domain and feel secure in the fusion department. There’s one other person who works there and they get along bc that person is a yes man. Doesn’t fight her on anything takes lunch when she tells him to and does whatever she says. I wasn’t that person. I’m happy it occurred bc I am actually happy at my new place.
I think the older women are control freaks, I guess to feel important. But nurses in general are good actresses with their niceties and fake smiles when the male doctor comes around.
It is super common for a senior nurse to stab behind others’ back after their initial friendly gestures. So disgusting behaviours and that’s why nursing will always short staff. You’re great that you left that toxic place early. Karma comes to her soon

I just got let go from a travel nursing position at a hospital where an NP who had it out for me went and told management that I was trying to code a patient who was completely normal, nothing wrong with her. The patient was actually in respiratory distress, then cleared her airway after I had her use an incentive spirometer and the mucous plug came out. OMG! He lied to my supervisor, the physician and the CEO. He got me fired! He lied and said I act like I am on drugs, etc., that another patient complained to him that I am not competent. I have been an RN for more than 25 years with extensive experience in a lot of different areas including ER, MedSurg/Tele, ICU step down, PCU, ICU and Hospice. and this is my 7th travel nursing assignment. So I had been a nurse there for just 2 weeks. It is really unbelievable that someone could go so far and say such a thing. He is a foreign NP from Nigeria.

I said the same thing as a new grad. Then I came to realize it is because nursing is predominantly women.

I feel sorry for the world cause Nurses are dangerous. And I'm a Nurse Assistant.
It comes from a lack of a spiritual heart condition. That's where it comes from. When you get to be my age you become less tolerable to stupidity and being mistreated. If I see a bully at work I call them out. REMEMBER, your job doesn't control your moral compass. All they have is your job. You're young and beautiful and you can go elsewhere, especially with a nursing degree. Of course, you want to be selective in the battles you choose but none the less, first learn to listen then to be heard. And when you speak, speak with conviction and truth.
A senior nurse wouldn't let me go on toilet breaks during a 12 and half hour shift.
You just go anyway, you don't have to ask anyone if you can go to the bathroom, you just go.
Just go your are not in jail.

My hospital tutors who was senior told me to grow a thick skin and what I was saying wasn't factually accurate.
Even though it was exactly what happened.
Basically it's a culture.
This was new cross hospital in Wolverhampton.
And the nurse that did it to me was called sister Sara .
I was on a training ND shift in an aged care facility literally 2 minutes walk away from my house. I was with a lovely AIN who was running through the routines and locations of key areas (Laundry, Linen room etc.) I was supposed to commence my training shifts WITHIN the area I had signed on to work. Instead? I ended up being stationed up stairs -- 64 residents to 2 AINs etc. Ratios were absolutely f**ked. The company had attempted to use me as an extra/floater to take the pressure off the staff rostered on. Me being a in training AIN? I refused to do anything on my own and stated that I want to be moved to my contracted area. The RN moved me into the dementia area to be with the AIN who had been really really nice earlier. However.. an hour and a half in? I found myself struggling with the behaviours of the residents. Not everyone is equipped emotionally to work within the dementia ward. I certainly am not. (My mother's mother had dementia. I saw her entire lengthy deterioration. She died May 11th 2022 in residential aged care. Very very sad.) I knew I would never be suited to work within such an area even before she passed away etc. I explained this to my guiding AIN and she agreed to have me move to my contracted area. Logically? It would set me on a stronger path to bond with the residents there and to learn the layout etc.
So... The RN on duty comes down (Older woman. between the ages of 50 - 60.) and I could just tell.. She and I? Would have major issues. I explained what I wanted, why I wanted it and the real reasonings behind my very logical and valid request. Her response? : "Then why the F**K are you even in aged care if you don't want or have the backbone to deal with demented residents? We all have to. Why shouldn't you?" Haha. You could have heard a literal needle drop.
My response? : "Firstly. Talk about f**king rude! The nerve you have to question me on my decision to be an AIN in aged care. The answer is surprisingly, uncomplicated : I am here to deliver genuine person centred assistance the residents. Secondly? Seems like you are the one with the truly ''demented'' personality and attitude : Consider yourself promptly reported for using such language in reference to these residents who look to us for help. Thirdly? I have lost a family member recently in residential aged care.. She had early on set dementia and I witnessed everything that this terrible condition entails: You insulted her and I by speaking in such a feral way. Furthermore? I have experienced nothing but the worst workplace politics, harassment, bullying and petty pickings in my last 2 aged care roles : I ain't going to tolerate your emotional constipation and utterly unprofessional verbal diarrhoea. You have met your match with me and I don't give two shits if you are an RN. You don't ever speak to me or anyone else.. Be them staff members, resident's families or residents like this ever again. No one is forcing you to stay here. If you are stressed and burnt out ? Fine. Yet it is no excuse! Sort your damn shit out... Go reset your heartless rhythm on the nearest DeFib for all I care... I have a job to do. Stay out of my way if you have nothing nice or productive to state to me.) (Ironic I told her to basically shock herself out of her smartass demeanour.. Read on to make the connection~.)
Needless to say? A week later? I was told by the same AIN who was assisting in my training (who had witnessed and reported the entire incident alongside me to management.) came and told me personally that said RN? was on stress leave~ I agreed but said I am working ND weakened shifts so I wouldn't have to deal with her shit. (most folks on her shift hated her guts for the way she treated them.) I told the AIN that more people have to stand up and speak out against such shit. Whilst I was off duty? (There is a park I go to across the road from the facility that I go to in the evenings to swing ((for destressing purposes etc.) On my way back to cross the road to head home? I actually witnessed this RN literally physically go after an agency worker obviously could not deal with such crap.... Shouting and swearing... proceeding to hit the windows and such of the agency worker's car etc. I lashed out verbally back (since I was hidden from view? said RN could not see me and got unnerved.. running back into the building. I had to comfort this agency worker ... as she was a crying mess... Needless to say? She most likely reported such treatment to her agency and never did return to the facility ever again.
I then sustained a work related injury (Left shoulder bursitis due to manual handing of heavy /dead weight residents on rounds.) I had a month and a half off and as I was returning to light duties? (They would not give me my weekend shifts back on light duty conditions.. only weeknights.) I warned management that if I was placed with said RN on any of the weekday night shifts? There would be carnage. I was assured and told that such would not happen as said RN left the company. ....
It was a relief that such was the case. One less thing to worry about... Yet I learnt the truth from the training AIN when I worked with her the first night back : She was on shift with this RN on a weekday night shift. Said RN began to have chest pain, dizziness, looked pale, difficulty breathing and pain radiating down her left arm. The team on that night took her vitals and her blood pressure was sky high, her oxygen stats were slightly and steadily becoming abnormal and her heartbeat was dangerously rapid. They were quick to organise an ambulance for her to get her assistance as it was a medical emergency. ---- Yet? Said RN proceeded to do nothing but verbally abuse and threaten her team with management's intervention!! These staff members who were trying to honestly help her? They left her alone. All of them had had enough of being treated so horribly.
They all got through the shift... For the RN however? Karma came to collect. 15 minutes after she drove home? She suffered a heart attack. (one of the ENs who was on the shift with her followed her back to her home. Luckily they did.) The ambulance was called . The RN landed in hospital... and that is all I know (or will ever know because I resigned from my job a few weeks ago as Work Cover fell through and I got 0 financial compensation for my injury. A flatlining industry is not a career prospect I will EVER enter again. Never.) Don't know if she lived or died. (I won't lie. I wanted her dead. I still sort of do.) Meh. Not my problem anymore.
I now am going to study photography and learn how to use my 3D printer. I'd rather work for myself and sell some pieces whenever I can... then to EVER put up with such abysmal shit from any feral co workers/management within any industry again. Simple as that.

Same thing happens in teaching, especially elementary. Probably, same in most professions.
I was an EMT, and this pissy attitude happens at the ambulance service and also with law enforcement. Both agencies HATE newbies and treat them like crap. Then, to top it off, I have brown skin. That was very offensive to small-minded country folk in the town of Warrensburg, Missouri.
I'm so glad I got away from them.

Nursing can be a mean world. So sad because we really need each other to survive and thrive in this healthcare industry. That’s why I try to educate nurses on my channel to do better because it starts with each of us doing better.
I just started working in a nursing home & I have been bullied from the beginning & doesn't matter age. They have their groups,
True. 30 years experience and a lot of nurses have bullied me along the way or tried. Setting boundaries for those who think it is ok to gaslight,bully, prejudice, etc. I mentor those who want to learn. Keep the personal hiccups at home folks. Focus on the nursing to avoid errors and avoid killing someone. Gate keepers are real and watch out for their friends in nursing.
"Nurses eat their young" means it is a hazing of the new nurse, no matter new grad or new hire with outside experience.
Patients deserve great nursing care. Endure and overcome in Christ.
Entertain me by attempting to bully me. I will protect the new nurses. I was trained by some very tough older nurses. They did love me but they lol showed me no mercy. I was young but smart enough to appreciate the honesty.

These issues aren't unique to nursing. Bullies exist wherever there are humans
In the world of nursing if you're bullied and you're stressed at work and people are trying to throw they power strings up and I know nurses can be messy how can they offer the best care to the patient and their families if they under that kind of stress and let's not go with stress you might be having because of relationships outside of work or family issues or School the pressures that is really heartbreaking

I think that there are many factors which contribute to nastiness and passing the buck. Over-worked, nurses who are aging that may be dealing with less energy and health issues, long-time nurses who are intolerant of anything that smells like incompetence bc it makes the job more stressful depending on who has to answer for what, and nurses who will point the finger anywhere but onto themselves bc the consequences are serious so admitting accountability can be personally career damaging.
Above all; while they are there working, they are there for themselves and their families and not for you or anyone else they work with. (I don’t mean that as awfully as it sounds.) Some don’t have the energy to be concerned with co-worker’s feelings or with making co-worker’s lives easier.
That said; I’m a PSW, and even at our level, there are those who will pass the buck in a heartbeat if it means covering their own rear. And the gossip about this one or that one is HORRENDOUS, hurtful and damaging and no, they also don’t consider feelings when it comes to either of these bad behaviours.
I am 52; so I am older but I’m new at this and honestly, I was shocked. I believed it would be primarily not just women playing as a team w/one another but healthcare workers in general, building one another up, being supportive & encouraging, showing patience and being helpful with each other.
It’s almost tragic.
And I know here in Evansville they're always trying to come up with programs to recruit new nurses and keep some of the nurses that are on staff from leaving but if you're reporting this on social media that is not helping the nurse in community grow by any measure and that is a sad tribute to the Healthcare Community

There is rare camaraderie in the healthcare profession. Mainly, because one is working with other women. I’d rather see more male nurses or male healthcare professionals out there as they can be a lot less hostile than females.
Its all true. The nice nurses stay away from the trouble. The nice nurses are few.
I am caribean... I have been here in the USA for over 20 years...and they have not made me change my gestures and my cultural ethic genuinely... that is why I speak almost 5+ languages.. I am out of the Matrix..

What's done in the dark, eventually comes to light - especially in nursing. Corruptness, incivility, and an overall thug nature has become prevalent in nursing and organizations that deal with nurses! The profession as a whole is moving to rid itself of incivility, a lack of professionalism, and the thug influence.
And they waner why their is a nursing shortgeis /Supervisor/and/nurse/etc pass the buck to someone else and lie about everything

Dealt with this so much in nursing. But I still do my job. I just see nurses and people in healthcare very differently. I'm a nurse...and it's been hard to find a job outside of nursing. Just hope people learn to leave me alone with incivility and unfair treatment. Adults do have self control. There is no excuse. Im definitely not giving anyone permission to mistreat me - "F" what they think.
