This is a topic I have thought about lately. But its also a topic I'm afraid to touch on as I'm just your average white dude and my fear is that because I have no horse in this race I have no place weighing in on it. However, born in 89 in South Africa, I was molded by the video games, series, movies of the 90s and 2000s from the US, and seeing the world through my own lens (as everyone surely does), seeing things from someone elses point of view, as it would be in this instance, didnt occur to me (at least this broadly) till maybe the past 6 years or so. One of my favourite characters in all of Final Fantasy, is Sazh from FF XIII, some folks had reservations about the character, being depicted with an afro, leaning more stereoptypical for some. My point is, there is a whole host of characters of colour, or characters who are heavily inspired by African American culture that I Iove, but I never considered the level of influence it would have on the demographic it was inspired by or based on, I never considered the cultural impact things could have.
