How to find and catch wintertime catfish by reading the river contours

  • Join Steve Douglas (The Catfish Dude) as he searches the Ohio river in real time for winter holes that will hold active catfish. Steve shares his old school thoughts on where to look and how to read the rivers to find the best wintering holes that are made up of natural structures in the rivers contour. Scour holes are created by obstructions or current breaks in the river bottoms and current flowing over these breaks cut out natural holes for the catfish to hold in. Learning to read the river's contours and natural flow can help you determine the best spots to place your bait for big catfish.

    *Overall **enjoyable.fishing** recommend I feel the Shadowfire 360 offers excellent value for those who are new to tenkara and don't want to break the bank on their first rod purchase.*

    Yessir. Reading the river is all I've ever done for over 40 years. Never had a depth finder or any electronical stuff. Cut banks, rock slides, seams, log piles close to any any of the previous is a plus. I just run on gut instinct and when in doubt, use a bigger bait. ALL of my PB was caught that way and all from the bank. Unless crawling out on top of a log jam counts as bank fishing.... Thank you for posting here! Much appreciated :)

    What do we do on the Missouri river Steve? 7 mph current has the bottom smooth and the only breaks you find are where the flat breaks off into the channel and where the the wing dams stick out into the river. Sometimes these breaks carry on for miles. The water is always very dirty and it is always moving 7 mph.

    Steve right about now I'm so jealous about 2-6 degrees here and way too much ice. Looks like you were right on the spot there. Some awesome fishing. Can't wait till spring thaw here maybe later in march. With all the great tips and hints you pass along this should be a great year for my son and I here in Wisconsin.

    Steve I watch your videos a lot mainly because you provide some great info on catching fish, anyways I fish the Tennessee River around Guntersville Dam a lot in the moving waters and use a technique called Bottom Bumping/Drifting I've seen you do similar fishing but not exactly like I do it, But I was just wondering if you've ever tried this technique

    • @SteveDouglastheCatfishDude

      Josh , chances are ive done it. if your talking about throwing in the gates and walking it and bumping it back?

      Way I do it is pull up to the dam drop down and let the current move me down the river while bumping bottom, Its the way my grandpaw taught me and it works really well

    on the scour holes steve if your fishing in smaller rivers that dont have alot of depth do the same rules apply ? like if the deepest hole you can find is say 15-20 ft and most of the river is around 8-10 ft that deeper hole would be the one to go to ?i fish some bigger deeper rivers but i also fish some that are quite shallow which definately doesnt produce alot of bigger fish so i guess what im trying to ask is if your in a smaller river with less depth and smaller fish do they still gather at the deeper holes or just wherever there is bait fish?

    • @SteveDouglastheCatfishDude
      @SteveDouglastheCatfishDude  9 років тому +1

      There should be a depth difference behind most current breaks like points,. It really depends on the consistent flow of current. Yes they should still gather in areas like this in the cold winter.
