I fish the river 30 miles north of that spot all the time around cape girardeau, mo. I pretty well live on the river year round. Catching fish in the river is a challenge when the water is ripping. Always keep a healthy respect for the Mississippi!

Putting a boat in the Mississippi for the first time is quite the eye opening experience for most people. It’s a challenge to fish due to the conditions and gear requirements, but the quality of fish are second to none!!!! Dave if you’re ever down in Louisiana I’d be glad to take you out and show you around. Hopefully put you on some pigs!!!!! Bon peche my friend

When I was 10 my dad and uncles fished the Miss. alot, but not until late summer early fall, by that time the river has calmed down abit more, we fished the New Boston area, alot of islands around there and we'd find an island we could land a boat on and fish the tail area of the river and catch alot of different species, cat, drum, gar, bass etc... but you always had your head on a swivel looking for debris or barges heading down the river, stay safe my friend!!

I only fished flood stage. Way back in the flooded trees. We mostly caught 4 and 5 pounders on congealed blood for bait. But running those lines at 3 AM. That was so fun. My buddy is dead now, I'm not, but I miss him and those fish. Thanks for those memories!

@@dennislee444 You remind me of a story my brother-in-law told us. He was a merchant marine officer for years, from Vietnam immediately after the academy (during the war, taking supplies & munitions down small rivers, yikes!) to all over the world before he married my sister, then mostly North America. Anyway, he was on a huge oil tanker coming down from Alaska, off the California coast when he had to radio a pleasure boat that they were on a collision course, the pleasure boat needed to change heading, the captain of the little boat said, no, you change course. My brother-in-law said, sure, be glad to but who is your next of kin so we can let them know of your demise, our turning radius is x (the amount of feet), your boat will not survive. The captain of the little boat changed course. I'm sure things like this happen all the time, professional watermen, like you and my brother-in-law, are dealing with huge ships, big water and more potential complications than others can fathom. Those of us that love you pros know you care! Stay safe and happy voyages to you!

Most of the large rivers like the great Mississippi and even here on the Illinois river, when the muddy rivers are flooding, the cats are usually up in the flooded lands. Bank fishing is great at those times... boating, way to dangerous, especially for those who don't wear a lifejacket Dave.
Mississippi river claims many lives each year, when it's not flooded. Please go back at a time less likely to be flooded, unless bank fitchin! 😉👍

@@joshchoate9499 Until a few years ago, I fished a lot at Reelfoot. I even had a lake boat many years ago. I lived in Union City so it was a short drive to the lake or river. Now, being in Paducah, KY, it's closer for me to go to KY lake or the Ohio. I'll admit that I have been scared for my life several times when fishing or hunting, and incidents on the Mississippi probably rank near the top.

But if you think the Mississippi River is moving fast go check out the Missouri River. It has no dams to slow it down only wing dikes so it moves much faster than the Mississippi and it’s not much smaller in size! If you ever come to the St.Louis area I’d love to take you to some of my spots, one is private property on the Missouri and it’s only 5 minutes from the spot I fish at the Alton dam on the Mississippi! But this was a great video, thanks for sharing! I look forward to another one on the Mississippi or Missouri River!

Used to fish oke Miss when I lived in central I'll. Fella I worked for had a fairly nice cabin cruiser boat at a marina 9n a slough of the river . We drove 2 hrs to the river from Matoon Ill. Indiana was on the far bank. We had licences for both states to avoid any possible issues. Largest catfish I was part of fishing for was a 48 lb flat head. One time we were fishing a big pipe from a food processing plant , there was something like lard flowing from this pipe all the fish we caught were chicken full of this stuff! We let everything go that we caught most times when we fished on Ole Miss. That was in the early 90's I do miss fishing in Ill. And pheasant and deer hunting on corn and soybean fields!

I live in Louisiana, MO, little town right on the Mississippi so I do a lot of fishing on that river. Mostly from the bank, but the few times I've been out on the boat, it's a little nerve racking, especially when it's high.

Was at the bait shop in Alton beginning of April picking up a new rod and reel and a fella came in looking for certified scales to weigh a monster blue. She was 100+. Skipjack maybe catfish candy but cut asian carp is like fillet mignon! They love that invasive main course.

I'd say the pucker factor was about a 8 on that trip. I have fished out of Oreagon Inlet in NC. several times and a couple of trips I wondered why the hell I was out there. I thought you did good with what you had to deal with.

Wanna read about a True Mississippi River Nightmare. Check out the Biggest American Maritime Disaster called The Sultana. I had Family on the Sultana and those men were terrified of that river after being in trying to save their lives. Awesome Video Dave
