The fact that they brought back Val Kilmer acknowledging and appreciating his chemotherapy and two tracheotomies through his lengthy battle with cancer is such a respectful gesture beyond the realm of acting that is heartbreaking and wholesome at the same time
If he hadn't come back, this movie never would have happened. Tom Cruise more or less said that if Val was out, so was he. If I remember right, this was the first time Val had actually spoken since his surgeries.
At the end of the scene, when Val asks, “Who’s the better pilot? You or me?”, you can see in his face Iceman, young, confident, and in all his glory. Thank you, Val, for bringing such a terrific character full circle. You are an incredible actor❤
I always thought ice was the better pilot. Mav was the better dog fighter but ice faced down 6 migs solo before mav showed up to help him. That’s damn great flying
Comparing Ice and Mav as pilots is pointless IMO. It is like comparing a classical musician and a jazz musician. They are two different skillsets. Both were the best at what they did.

By far and away my favorite scene in the movie. Two guys who in their uber-competitive youth looked and felt indestructible are facing the inexorable reality of time, now well aware of both their weaknesses and mortality. Despite that, they're still able to draw on their mutual professional respect and genuine friendship. It's really a beautiful ode to the inevitability of growing old.

I teared up in the theater when Val Kilmer started speaking. What a wonderful scene, and a thoughtful way to incorporate Kilmer's real-life illnesses into the script.
the fact that Val Kilmer worked SO HARD , to get those lines done right and without the use of his voice box is insane . it took a lot of training , a lot of pain , and he made this scene all the more WONDERFUL for it . Even after everything he’s been through , Val Kilmer’s still got it .
I remember reading that Tom C lobbied to get Val in the movie. Even INSISTED that they write him in. They didn't want to do it but Tom would not take no for an answer. IMO, it makes the storyline.
After fighting stage 4 cancer, watching this makes me wanna cry. I am wishing Val the absolute best in his recovery. I know how hard it really is after losing over 7 inches of my small intestine and having to adjust my diet around it, the pain and discomfort in my right hip, all of it. Even after 2+ years I still get pain and all that. ❤ We love ya Val! ❤
One of the best reunion scenes between characters I've personally seen in a while. The right amount of dialouge, nothing too sappy, and the appropriate expressions on the faces to deliver a emotional reconcile. And huge props to the unit known as Val Kilmer for being willing to be the film in spite of his illness.

Word on the street is it was emotionally hard for Val to do this scene, Tom had to convince him. However that happened, tears filled my eyes from watching this, it's just beautiful timing. Val Kilmer, you are the man! I love you buddy, thank you for everything you did for the movies I love!
Imagine the professionalism that takes. To not have a voice and to take on a character that might actually face that reality in his future. My respect for VK took on a whole new level. This scene was oscar worthy IMHO.
This scene was heartbreaking. Two of the finest aviators Top Gun had ever produced sitting in the same office. Once bitter rivals, now warm friends. And the emotion and pain Mitchell showed could ONLY be shown to one of equal stature (not rank) to him. Iceman saw his pain, a pain lasting over 36 years. And in the only token of respect Ice could give such a decorated fighter pilot was "The Navy needs Maverick, the kids need Maverick, that is why I fought for you all these years." Iceman showed so much admiration for Maverick in that simple statement, knowing how much pain he himself was in. And saying this from a dying man. That is something anyone with any feeling could treasure. Maverick at that point realized he owed Ice so much. And if he pulled this mission off, it would be the thanks Ice would have deserved.
Iceman got that one kill in TG, because Maverick came in and shot down those other 3 MIGs It's likely that incident put Iceman and Maverick in a good light (actual air-to-air kills are rare for the USN and USAF after the Vietnam war) and Iceman managed to parley it into a fast-track career path to Admiral, unlike Maverick So Iceman likely feels that he owes Maverick for all he managed to get today, because if it were not for Maverick he would have been shot down by 4 MIGs that day
I'm going to bet the hug between the two of them was 100% Genuine. How wonderful is it that they managed to get Val into the movie with the reality of his illness front and center. Well done Val and Tom
Not only is Val Kilmer’s performance here incredible despite his actual real life condition, that although it has been 36 years since Goose’s incident, his death still visibly haunts Maverick in such a huge fashion when it comes to Rooster.
It's never really said or shown but...I think Iceman feels responsible just as much as Maverick does in Goose's death. It was HIS wake after all that caused the spin. Maverick kept telling Iceman to take the shot, but he didn't because he wanted to wait, which wasn't a bad idea. They weren't in a real combat situation after all. But the next thing he knows he hears Maverick and Goose sounding way too distressed for it not to be real and looks out the canopy glass to see his wingman going down. And all he could do was send the mayday and watch as the plane spirals out of control as it goes down. He had his problems with Maverick, but Goose wasn't a part of it.
Tore me up. Profoundly moving. Absolute mastery of their craft and it wasn't just acting. These guys knew down deep how meaningful to an entire generation this would be.
In the movie, Ice backed Mav. In real life, the roles are reversed; Cruise backed Kilmer, insisted that he appears in the movie regardless of his condition.
Kilmer is very lucky that Tom Cruise loves him as a person and respects him as an actor. Not everybody can say that, Tom is very though regarding his job and when he doesn't like someone he doesn't hide it. But it's pretty obvious his admiration towards Val Kilmer.
This by far is Tom's best dramatic performance in recent memory. His acting throughout the movie conveys a man tortured by guilt all his life after he lost his best friend. It's is so heartfelt you really feel sympathy for his pain. And he pulled it off with relatively minimal dialogue at that.
That’s exactly it. It’s relatable. Everyone can relate to having lost a love one and not being able to let them go. Or not knowing how to do that. It’s sorta beautiful and so human.
This is easily the best scene in the movie. The amount of emotion Val radiates with just his facial expressions is incredible, and Tom giving his dramatic all when he could've just phoned it in. Both men deserve an award.
That phrase “it’s time to let go” describe Mav so well. He’s been holding on to that pain and guilt for so long. Ice knew that, he’s known for the past 30 years. And for the sake of the mission, and for Mav, he wants him to be able to move forward. A true friend.
For an “action movie”, an incredibly emotional scene, and Val’s real life illness adds to the gravitas. Also, the idea of rivals having such mutual respect and love for each other is a message we really need right now.
Notice the Top Gun trophy on the wall behind Maverick? Iceman always was the better pilot. But the Navy needed Maverick more than Ice; only a pilot with Maverick’s level of skill with tenacity could pull the mission off.
@@gcHK47 Ice and Maverick were always close to each other atop the leaderboard throughout their time at Top Gun, and Maverick may have been able to pass him if it weren't for the downward spiral (no pun intended) that he went into after Goose's untimely death.
This scene alone is why I loved this sequel more than its predecessor. When you see two guys rival and dislike each other at first but over 30 years become close friends and have each others back there is something so special about that and that is why this scene is amazing. Iceman disliked Maverick at first but once Maverick had Ice's back Ice had his and kept him in a career in the Navy and the friendship lasted for over 30 years. I dont cry often but almost came close in this scene. The characters growth was sensational. Val keep fighting the good fight buddy and I will be your Wingman anytime.
The drama was so much more heavy in this one. No matter how strong you are, time will have you eventually. And seeing these two after so long hits hard.

This scene was what made me stick around. Up until then, it was all but a shot-by-shot remake of the original. This scene was where the director, Joseph Kosinski, stopped trying to be the late Tony Scott and found his own voice.

As someone old enough to have watched the original on the big screen when it came out, I can say that it was a movie of its time. You have to understand the zeitgeist of the '70s-'80s to understand why the original movie was so important to Americans...we were coming off the "malaise era" of the '70s, and Americans wanted to be reassured that we were still the "big dog" on the block. I lived not far from Miramar, where the Top Gun school was located in those days, and I can tell you that there was palpable pride (and a little bit of relief) that we had the best pilots, equipment, and support staff in the world, and, once again, people were reassured that that was still the case. That's part of the reason the film was such a success. It was a great movie, too, great entertainment, but I cannot express to you the emotional impact that it had on ordinary Americans. To some extent, I think the new flick is being so well received for the same reason: In a world where everything seems to be falling apart (especially here at home), it's reassuring to know that we're STILL the big dog.
I just love how Iceman went from "You are everyone's problem, that's because every time you are up in the air you are unsafe, I don't like you because you are Dangerous" to "The Navy needs Maverick, The Kid needs Maverick, that is why I fought for you. That is why you are still here!"
And that's what makes this relationship between Iceman and Maverick all the more impactful. We can see how they both grew up together, from the beginning to the end of their careers. The sentimentality of a whole lifetime condensed into two movies, two masterpieces at that.
It's time to let go... That hit me hard. Not only in the context of the scene but my own life as well. Who knew Top Gun would be giving me a massive epiphany. Incredible scene...
Tom cruise should be nominated for best actor from this scene alone. What an incredible actor man. It’s not talked about enough how many great movies he’s made over the years.
They cannot know how much this scene means to us. I couldn't avoid my tears when realised they had been friends for all this time and Iceman always got his back. Maverick lost his best friend that he will never forget but still, he gained another lifelong friend which started out rival. This is so touching and when he died... Ughhh
So nice to see Tom turn in a performance beyond what's expected of him nowadays, and it's in service of one of the most touching and moving reunions. Val will always be a legend.
He was doing well as a dramatic actor honestly during the 90s; when he routinely competed for globes and Oscars. His problem (which he finally grew out of in Collateral) was that he was prone to overacting. But since then, he’s developed such a great sense of timing, naturalism, and nuance, and now the guy absolutely shines when he has to actually act. It’s crazy to think that even when he eventually slows down from all the crazy action, he’ll still have arguably his most promising turn yet as a dramatic actor to look forward to.

this scene had me sobbing, I watched the first top gun a decade ago, when I was 15 years old and now we get a really heartfelt moment between the two, it was sweet of iceman for protecting maverick all this time.
I thank this movie for not destroying the characters of Ice Man and Maverick. Any other movie would’ve made the character of callsign Phoenix a super pilot that can do no wrong and is superior in every way to every other pilot and much better than Maverick. But instead she’s just part of the group and is kind of a likeable character. Her, Rooster, Hangman and the rest of the pilots could carry a next movie if done right. Plus Maverick gets to fly one last mission while also having a heartfelt send off to Ice Man that keeps his dignity and integrity as a character that has achieved a resolution and completed his arc. Good job writers. 👍

This scene alone was worth the price of admission. I can only imagine how high emotions were running on the set when this was filmed. I loved that Kilmer was given the chance to do this; show how his reality and fiction can be coming from the same source. Great respect for him and his craft, and the first time I've seen Cruise look like he was genuinely experiencing grief.

This scene really gut punched me. It was a great tribute for Val Kilmer. I also love that he typed on the computer because it is a great nod to the actor in real life because of his vocal chords.

Val Kilmer is still the most underrated actor. To still pull off this scene in an almost silent capacity just shows his talent. The Academy still owes him one for Tombstone FYI.

This is the part i teared up when i watch on screen. The touching moment between two former fighter pilots. The Compassion....Respect and Honor. I am so glad they allow ICE MAN to be included in the movie.
For the two of them to stand there and do that scene after all those years and everything that they've been through. I truly believe that if Val Kilmer had died in real life at the filming the movie he would have died happy. Because he got that moment.

The level of character development and emotion shown to these legacy characters in this scene was truly something else. Not even franchise films (Marvel or Star Wars) could do that.
I started tearing up just at Iceman's face at 0:25. Something about the way he's looking at Maverick - compassionate and wise, totally without judgment, seeing him in his pain and confusion and being right there with him. What a beautiful scene.
2:18 mark after they stand up. You can see what appears to be the Top Gun winner’s plaque over Maverick’s shoulder. A visual reminder of how they became close friends. Battled (practiced) against each other only to fight the enemy together and protect the other to return safely. Most powerful scene in the whole sequel for the diehard fans given Kilmer’s real life cancer diagnosis.

this is top tier acting. it's the smallest things, from ice's knowing glance while he watches mav struggle with tears, over mav's jaw clenching and looking away at "i don't know how" to mav getting more and more choked up the more he talks about rooster... "either way i could loose him forever" my heart! ice knowing exactly how to give him some sort of comfort and talking even though it's so painful for him... their usual banter at the end:'-) and the hug! ice looking so happy and mav tightening the second hug just a little... oof i mean it's damn sad considering what happens after but this scene is just beautiful. showing the friendship and deep connection these two build up over so many years, and i feel like that applies to both ice&mav and val&tom... it's sweet that tom advocated so much to have val in this♡ they both smashed this scene! val's acting was so emotional even without talking much, you could see and feel everything in his face and eyes, it was mesmerising to watch. tom did so well showing the more vulnerable side of maverick, he knows he's safe with ice, that it's safe to loosen the strings even if just a little... for me this scene is definitely in my top 3, if not my favorite. gosh this got long oops, this film is occupying my brain haha:-) if anyone needs someone to scream about this movie, ramble for hours or just to talk in general, gladly hmu:-D my film nerd self is always ready for some chats☆ i'm nice i swear! lol

Something about two people starting off as opponents/enemies, and then later gaining each other's respect and becoming friends always gets me, and here it was executed perfectly! Love that they went this way with the characters!
I like to think that Iceman felt so guilty about indirectly causing Goose’s death he spent his whole career protecting Maverick. Being the big brother he never had. And yes, I cried my eyes out during this scene.
I kind of look at it that way, though Ice didn't cause the ejection seat/canopy failure that ultimately killed him. However, a good man would feel responsible for being even vaguely part of that. And I definitely like the take that he felt a responsibility to fly top cover for Maverick after that.
@andrewwaldock while it was ultimately a fluke accident, the events leading up to it were a result of Maverick and Iceman being more concerned about beating each other than having each other's back(i.e. Mav pushing too hard just so he could show Ice up and not giving him space, and Ice being stubborn to the point where he didn't pull up till the last possible second where Mav and Goose got caught in the jet wash.)
This is a beautiful scene by 2 of the best actors. Iceman’s words “Who’s the better pilot? You or me?” was priceless. I love how they playfully reunited their former rivalry and yet they are best friends now. Beautiful.
One of the best acted scenes I have ever seen. I really felt the subtext with "It's Time to Let Go" pertaining to Tom Cruise's own career. It's coming to a point soon where he will have to let go of playing an all action movie star, and I really felt that was him being vulernable with that reality in this scene. Just perfection.

Exactly. The emotions are real and the scene isn’t broken by some lame joke. The moment of levity is at the end where it belongs. A nice laugh after a heavy moment can work really well as demonstrated here. Unlike other movies that have jokes in the middle of intense or heavy scenes. Let scenes breath and let the actors show that they can, in fact, act.

This scene between Maverick and Iceman sells this entire film emotionally. Not just fighter jocks kicking the tires and lighting the fires. This is the fate that can await young Naval Aviators and Flight Officers like the group that Maverick is leading.

This is such a GREAT moment, the technology and how they were able to bring Val Kilmer back into the story and Tom Cruise fighting to have him in it, just speak volumes about there friendship and it shows on screen and comes across as such...
"This is a nice moment, let's not ruin it" OMG.... So much emotion packed in that statement and the seemingly casual response ! I was that generation and got old too. So many memories from my golden and immemorable time in the 80's and 90's. I can relate to the lifetime of emotions packed in a few seconds there !
All I can say is this scene is beautiful and powerful. Val didn’t need to say a word just the way he looks at Maverick and his smile was more than enough to reach the viewers hearts.
This is a very emotional scene, seeing Ice and Maverick who once couldn’t stand each other now loving and caring friends and Ice doing everything he can to keep Maverick safe from exile. It’s also sad to know this would be there final ever time seeing each other before Iceman’s death.
Something tells me that some of those tears are not acted. Their bond is not only between their characters, this scene hits like a train when you growed up with their movies and now see Val so wasted by that disease at a still relatively young age.

After fighting stage 4 cancer, watching this makes me wanna cry. I am wishing Val the absolute best in his recovery. I know how hard it really is after losing over 7 inches of my small intestine and having to adjust my diet around it, the pain and discomfort in my right hip, all of it. Even after 2+ years I still get pain and all that. ❤ We love ya Val! ❤

One of the best reunion scenes between characters I've personally seen in a while. The right amount of dialouge, nothing too sappy, and the appropriate expressions on the faces to deliver a emotional reconcile.
And huge props to the unit known as Val Kilmer for being willing to be the film in spite of his illness.

Imagine the professionalism that takes. To not have a voice and to take on a character that might actually face that reality in his future. My respect for VK took on a whole new level. This scene was oscar worthy IMHO.

This scene was heartbreaking. Two of the finest aviators Top Gun had ever produced sitting in the same office. Once bitter rivals, now warm friends. And the emotion and pain Mitchell showed could ONLY be shown to one of equal stature (not rank) to him. Iceman saw his pain, a pain lasting over 36 years. And in the only token of respect Ice could give such a decorated fighter pilot was "The Navy needs Maverick, the kids need Maverick, that is why I fought for you all these years."
Iceman showed so much admiration for Maverick in that simple statement, knowing how much pain he himself was in. And saying this from a dying man. That is something anyone with any feeling could treasure. Maverick at that point realized he owed Ice so much. And if he pulled this mission off, it would be the thanks Ice would have deserved.

I heard that Tom openly told Paramount that he would not do Top Gun: Maverick without Val.
Not only is Val Kilmer’s performance here incredible despite his actual real life condition, that although it has been 36 years since Goose’s incident, his death still visibly haunts Maverick in such a huge fashion when it comes to Rooster.
It's never really said or shown but...I think Iceman feels responsible just as much as Maverick does in Goose's death. It was HIS wake after all that caused the spin. Maverick kept telling Iceman to take the shot, but he didn't because he wanted to wait, which wasn't a bad idea. They weren't in a real combat situation after all. But the next thing he knows he hears Maverick and Goose sounding way too distressed for it not to be real and looks out the canopy glass to see his wingman going down. And all he could do was send the mayday and watch as the plane spirals out of control as it goes down. He had his problems with Maverick, but Goose wasn't a part of it.

Kilmer is very lucky that Tom Cruise loves him as a person and respects him as an actor. Not everybody can say that, Tom is very though regarding his job and when he doesn't like someone he doesn't hide it. But it's pretty obvious his admiration towards Val Kilmer.

That’s exactly it. It’s relatable. Everyone can relate to having lost a love one and not being able to let them go. Or not knowing how to do that. It’s sorta beautiful and so human.

This is easily the best scene in the movie. The amount of emotion Val radiates with just his facial expressions is incredible, and Tom giving his dramatic all when he could've just phoned it in. Both men deserve an award.

That phrase “it’s time to let go” describe Mav so well. He’s been holding on to that pain and guilt for so long. Ice knew that, he’s known for the past 30 years. And for the sake of the mission, and for Mav, he wants him to be able to move forward. A true friend.
For an “action movie”, an incredibly emotional scene, and Val’s real life illness adds to the gravitas. Also, the idea of rivals having such mutual respect and love for each other is a message we really need right now.

Notice the Top Gun trophy on the wall behind Maverick? Iceman always was the better pilot. But the Navy needed Maverick more than Ice; only a pilot with Maverick’s level of skill with tenacity could pull the mission off.
@@gcHK47 Ice and Maverick were always close to each other atop the leaderboard throughout their time at Top Gun, and Maverick may have been able to pass him if it weren't for the downward spiral (no pun intended) that he went into after Goose's untimely death.
This scene alone is why I loved this sequel more than its predecessor. When you see two guys rival and dislike each other at first but over 30 years become close friends and have each others back there is something so special about that and that is why this scene is amazing. Iceman disliked Maverick at first but once Maverick had Ice's back Ice had his and kept him in a career in the Navy and the friendship lasted for over 30 years. I dont cry often but almost came close in this scene. The characters growth was sensational. Val keep fighting the good fight buddy and I will be your Wingman anytime.
The drama was so much more heavy in this one. No matter how strong you are, time will have you eventually. And seeing these two after so long hits hard.

This scene was what made me stick around. Up until then, it was all but a shot-by-shot remake of the original. This scene was where the director, Joseph Kosinski, stopped trying to be the late Tony Scott and found his own voice.

As someone old enough to have watched the original on the big screen when it came out, I can say that it was a movie of its time. You have to understand the zeitgeist of the '70s-'80s to understand why the original movie was so important to Americans...we were coming off the "malaise era" of the '70s, and Americans wanted to be reassured that we were still the "big dog" on the block. I lived not far from Miramar, where the Top Gun school was located in those days, and I can tell you that there was palpable pride (and a little bit of relief) that we had the best pilots, equipment, and support staff in the world, and, once again, people were reassured that that was still the case. That's part of the reason the film was such a success. It was a great movie, too, great entertainment, but I cannot express to you the emotional impact that it had on ordinary Americans. To some extent, I think the new flick is being so well received for the same reason: In a world where everything seems to be falling apart (especially here at home), it's reassuring to know that we're STILL the big dog.
I just love how Iceman went from "You are everyone's problem, that's because every time you are up in the air you are unsafe, I don't like you because you are Dangerous" to "The Navy needs Maverick, The Kid needs Maverick, that is why I fought for you. That is why you are still here!"

And that's what makes this relationship between Iceman and Maverick all the more impactful. We can see how they both grew up together, from the beginning to the end of their careers. The sentimentality of a whole lifetime condensed into two movies, two masterpieces at that.

So nice to see Tom turn in a performance beyond what's expected of him nowadays, and it's in service of one of the most touching and moving reunions. Val will always be a legend.
He was doing well as a dramatic actor honestly during the 90s; when he routinely competed for globes and Oscars. His problem (which he finally grew out of in Collateral) was that he was prone to overacting. But since then, he’s developed such a great sense of timing, naturalism, and nuance, and now the guy absolutely shines when he has to actually act. It’s crazy to think that even when he eventually slows down from all the crazy action, he’ll still have arguably his most promising turn yet as a dramatic actor to look forward to.

this scene had me sobbing, I watched the first top gun a decade ago, when I was 15 years old and now we get a really heartfelt moment between the two, it was sweet of iceman for protecting maverick all this time.
I thank this movie for not destroying the characters of Ice Man and Maverick.
Any other movie would’ve made the character of callsign Phoenix a super pilot that can do no wrong and is superior in every way to every other pilot and much better than Maverick.
But instead she’s just part of the group and is kind of a likeable character. Her, Rooster, Hangman and the rest of the pilots could carry a next movie if done right.
Plus Maverick gets to fly one last mission while also having a heartfelt send off to Ice Man that keeps his dignity and integrity as a character that has achieved a resolution and completed his arc.

This scene alone was worth the price of admission. I can only imagine how high emotions were running on the set when this was filmed. I loved that Kilmer was given the chance to do this; show how his reality and fiction can be coming from the same source. Great respect for him and his craft, and the first time I've seen Cruise look like he was genuinely experiencing grief.
For all the cool movies he makes, one could forget that Tom Cruise is a good actor. And this one here with Mr Kilmer....🥺...whew...

This scene really gut punched me. It was a great tribute for Val Kilmer. I also love that he typed on the computer because it is a great nod to the actor in real life because of his vocal chords.
Happy sad to see them both. Happy seeing their friendship, sad seeing Iceman (rather Val ) having trouble talking. Both nailed this scene and that last part, truly friends teasing each other

The level of character development and emotion shown to these legacy characters in this scene was truly something else. Not even franchise films (Marvel or Star Wars) could do that.
I started tearing up just at Iceman's face at 0:25. Something about the way he's looking at Maverick - compassionate and wise, totally without judgment, seeing him in his pain and confusion and being right there with him. What a beautiful scene.
2:18 mark after they stand up. You can see what appears to be the Top Gun winner’s plaque over Maverick’s shoulder. A visual reminder of how they became close friends. Battled (practiced) against each other only to fight the enemy together and protect the other to return safely. Most powerful scene in the whole sequel for the diehard fans given Kilmer’s real life cancer diagnosis.
The plaque for the alternates is down in the ladies' room.

it's the smallest things, from ice's knowing glance while he watches mav struggle with tears, over mav's jaw clenching and looking away at "i don't know how" to mav getting more and more choked up the more he talks about rooster... "either way i could loose him forever" my heart!
ice knowing exactly how to give him some sort of comfort and talking even though it's so painful for him... their usual banter at the end:'-) and the hug! ice looking so happy and mav tightening the second hug just a little... oof i mean it's damn sad considering what happens after but this scene is just beautiful.
showing the friendship and deep connection these two build up over so many years, and i feel like that applies to both ice&mav and val&tom... it's sweet that tom advocated so much to have val in this♡ they both smashed this scene! val's acting was so emotional even without talking much, you could see and feel everything in his face and eyes, it was mesmerising to watch. tom did so well showing the more vulnerable side of maverick, he knows he's safe with ice, that it's safe to loosen the strings even if just a little...
for me this scene is definitely in my top 3, if not my favorite.

Something about two people starting off as opponents/enemies, and then later gaining each other's respect and becoming friends always gets me, and here it was executed perfectly! Love that they went this way with the characters!
I like to think that Iceman felt so guilty about indirectly causing Goose’s death he spent his whole career protecting Maverick. Being the big brother he never had.
And yes, I cried my eyes out during this scene.
I kind of look at it that way, though Ice didn't cause the ejection seat/canopy failure that ultimately killed him. However, a good man would feel responsible for being even vaguely part of that. And I definitely like the take that he felt a responsibility to fly top cover for Maverick after that.

@andrewwaldock while it was ultimately a fluke accident, the events leading up to it were a result of Maverick and Iceman being more concerned about beating each other than having each other's back(i.e. Mav pushing too hard just so he could show Ice up and not giving him space, and Ice being stubborn to the point where he didn't pull up till the last possible second where Mav and Goose got caught in the jet wash.)
This is a beautiful scene by 2 of the best actors. Iceman’s words “Who’s the better pilot? You or me?” was priceless. I love how they playfully reunited their former rivalry and yet they are best friends now. Beautiful.
One of the best acted scenes I have ever seen. I really felt the subtext with "It's Time to Let Go" pertaining to Tom Cruise's own career.
It's coming to a point soon where he will have to let go of playing an all action movie star, and I really felt that was him being vulernable with that reality in this scene.

Exactly. The emotions are real and the scene isn’t broken by some lame joke. The moment of levity is at the end where it belongs. A nice laugh after a heavy moment can work really well as demonstrated here.
Unlike other movies that have jokes in the middle of intense or heavy scenes. Let scenes breath and let the actors show that they can, in fact, act.

This scene between Maverick and Iceman sells this entire film emotionally. Not just fighter jocks kicking the tires and lighting the fires. This is the fate that can await young Naval Aviators and Flight Officers like the group that Maverick is leading.
Either Iceman shrunk or the little runt grew. Their height difference in the original movie was significant. In this scene they look equal. Perhaps Tommy put on his high heels??? 😂

This is such a GREAT moment, the technology and how they were able to bring Val Kilmer back into the story and Tom Cruise fighting to have him in it, just speak volumes about there friendship and it shows on screen and comes across as such...

"This is a nice moment, let's not ruin it" OMG.... So much emotion packed in that statement and the seemingly casual response ! I was that generation and got old too. So many memories from my golden and immemorable time in the 80's and 90's. I can relate to the lifetime of emotions packed in a few seconds there !
This was an incredible scene. When I actually saw Val Kilmer in the movie I was so happy because I didn't expect him because of the illness
The first time I watched this scene, I teared.
After some time I watched it a second time.
I didn't expect to tear EVEN MORE.
All I can say is this scene is beautiful and powerful. Val didn’t need to say a word just the way he looks at Maverick and his smile was more than enough to reach the viewers hearts.
This is a very emotional scene, seeing Ice and Maverick who once couldn’t stand each other now loving and caring friends and Ice doing everything he can to keep Maverick safe from exile.
It’s also sad to know this would be there final ever time seeing each other before Iceman’s death.
Something tells me that some of those tears are not acted. Their bond is not only between their characters, this scene hits like a train when you growed up with their movies and now see Val so wasted by that disease at a still relatively young age.
