I just had this problem TODAY with this model and my "compatible"/non-Innobella, magenta cartridge (save money!). Yes, this might work with some cartridges; and you can put opaque masking tape over the cartridge window to get most/all of the ink to print (save money!). But, in addition to resetting the system through the control panel, unplugging the machine for 20 minutes, installing and reinstalling the cartridge one at a time over and over again to no avail--I suddenly realized my problem. Okay, take out the cartridges, get a flashlight, and shine it into the cartridge bay. Look at how filthy everything is, get a strong paper towel, dampen it with alcohol; do your best to clean all the gunk you see (it's not really necessary to clean the bays that read your cartridges normally). Take a good look at the bay where the cartridge can't be detected. You know that window that shows the ink level? Put it in front of its bay/insert point and notice the level the window is at. Look into the bay and shine the light inside to see the two rectangular sensors that read the ink (they're at the same level as the window). To me, they look like plastic, but they could be tempered glass. When you click your cartridge into the bay, the plastic window with the ink level (where you literally see the liquid ink) is in between these two sensors. Mine were dirty even though outwardly they looked like the other sensors in bays where the cartridges could be detected normally. I took my trusty paper towel, wet it with alcohol (more than damp), wrapped the paper towel around a flat head screwdriver, gently poked the paper towel covered screwdriver into the bay, and gently scrubbed each sensor. Just be careful you don't do it too hard. After 15-20 seconds of scrubbing, I let the sensors air dry (it takes seconds); I put my magenta cartridge back and eureka!--my printer could read my nearly full (though now it read as completely full) magenta cartridge again. I didn't find this "fix" anywhere, but when I read how the sensors worked, figured out where they were, it hit me "duh"--that's the problem. Hope this works for other people. This! I have been fighting this problem for days until I found this comment. These cartridges don't have chips, so I knew it was detecting it somehow else. I used a can of contact cleaner instead of alcohol, only because I had a bunch laying around, and blew the area out until it was all clean. Problem solved. Thank you for this!

I think it might be the actual cartridge, because if I put it in the wrong slot, it still says it can't detect it whereas if I put another one in this slot it recognises it as a wrong colour. And yes, I realise that I shouldn't put them in the wrong place, but I thought the other option was to throw the printer out.
For anyone that has issues with cartridge detection, take out the cartridges and shine a torch in the bottom and make sure the spring loaded module detectors are out. It is obvious when the other cartridges are working ok. You will see a row of small springs headed by a small plastic plate which detects each ink cartridge. They get sticky with ink leaks and get jammed in the back. Tickle the offending colour with a terminal electrical driver for example and it will pop back to the same alignment as the working cartridges. Brother printers are HARDY beasts and keep going. Just give this a check too! :) Regularly clean the heads too for optimum performance...

Meaning - that the only thing they could do was refer me to a local repair shop, where I would pay out of pocket. HA!!! It went straight in the garbage. I'm not spending another penny on that POS!
I don't get this video, the guy ends up by saying have to buy a new cartridge. My cartridge has been fine, plenty of ink just decided to throw a wobbly. It even printed 2nd page of document and then came up with error. Weird
Here’s what worked for me 11/21/2020... I opened up the printer, took out each cartridge while the printer was opened and turned them upside down, reinstalled them all and then closed the printer. I did a successful test print afterwards and the problem was solved.

And then the real way to fix this error is to stick some black tape over that window he's pointing to on an original empty cartridge and install the cartridge. Does the error go away? Great, now prise the duff printed circuit off your generic cartridge (I'm not judging you) and replace it with the one off the empty Brother cartridge. Now it works! You're welcome.
Spot on, often. But any thoughts on my having used the same refillables for years, and suddenly just one (at one point, two) are saying that I need to reinsert slowly. I removed, reinstalled old firmware (I don't think it had been updated, anyway), but regardless, I don't think that it's a chip issue. I've always used the ones that came with these refillables. I cleaned the chip, the top (as best I could) that contacts the chip, and the side windows that detect the level of the ink. Fwiw, I've never had to tape the side windows; reinserting and answering that I replaced them has always worked to reset them as "full" (I have larger containers continually feeding the cartridges).
@@JackJensenTrader Mine did the same, years of no issues, then two quit. It turned out to be the pcb was just not touching the contacts properly. I just bought new generics and pulled the PCB's off them and re-seated them on my re-fills.

I just received this error and I removed and reinserted the cartridge and the around 1/3% BLCK cartridge is now on 100% even though the printer did not even ask "Did you change B?" so...
funny but what a load of??simple method but why does it say ink needs replacement when it does not - because its a software problem - they have made the program do this and many have complaint - up date the latest firmware from brother - took me a day to work this out
