  • First-order reactions depend on how much substrate you have to react. More specifically, the reaction rate depends on how high the concentration of the substrate is. If you draw a first-order reaction on a typically-scaled linear graph, you will get a curve. It’s hard to judge a curve to see if it is truly logarithmic and extract information, which is where log axes come into play.
    Semi-Log paper is special graphing paper that has a log-scaled y-axis with scaled boxes. Inspection works best when your best-fit line is drawn accurately. If you aren’t confident in drawing best-fit lines, you can always take the surefire way. Watch this video as we walk through semi-log graphing.
