Renal Dose Adjustment and Intuition
The kidneys take in blood and filter it with the power of a million nephrons. The main idea is that polar solutes can be excreted easily, because urine is water. Things that are bound to proteins cannot be excreted easily. These tend to be hydrophobic compounds. Things that are really big like proteins also cannot be filtered into the lumen. Watch this video to walk through a pharmacokinetic problem that works through renal dose adjustments.
About DHI: The purpose of this organization is to expose health sciences graduate students to pharmacy digital health and informatics by organizing panel sessions, mentorship, professional socials, developing technical leadership skills, innovation and developing pharmacy based digital health projects. Activities will encompass any of the growing pharmacy sectors in electronic health records, e-prescribing, e-dispensing, blockchain, online pharmacy, healthcare technology, software systems analysis, digital therapeutics, big data, pharmacy digital education, informatics, or digital medicine.

Pharmacokinetics: Two-Compartment Models
Переглядів 2,2 тис.2 роки тому
Some drugs may follow a two-compartment model, where drug distributes between a central and a peripheral compartment. Their kinetics can be described by a few macroconstants and microconstants, allowing you to find the concentration of the drug at any time. Watch this video to practice using two-compartment models. About DHI: The purpose of this organization is to expose health sciences graduat...

Pharmacokinetics: Hepatic Clearance Equation

The total hepatic clearance equation describes hepatic clearance in the terms of a few drug and liver variables: blood flow to the liver, intrinsic clearance, and protein binding. Watch this video to learn more about using the hepatic clearance equation to estimate extraction ratios, clearances, and changes in liver metabolism. About DHI: The purpose of this organization is to expose health sci...

Pharmacokinetics: Method of Residuals
Переглядів 8 тис.2 роки тому
Watch this video to learn about Methods of Residuals. Oral drugs must be absorbed, unlike IV drugs. We can model the drug concentrations as a function of time by taking the absorption rate and the elimination rate into account. However, we don’t usually know these rates without experiments. The method of residuals allows us to estimate these rates from graphed concentration data. Watch this vid...

Pharmacokinetics: Short Infusion Loading Dose
Переглядів 2792 роки тому
Watch this video to work through a case scenario of a Short Infusion Loading Dose. The short infusion model assumes that you have not reached steady-state concentration by the time the infusion is turned off. This is due to the infusion time being long in comparison to the half-life of the drug. Therefore, it is possible that much of the drug was cleared during the infusion. About DHI: The purp...

Pharmacokinetics: Bolus Loading Doses

Watch this video to learn more about bolus loading doses. A bolus is a small dose, like a burst of drug to reach a certain target level. The bolus model allows us to calculate the concentration after a long infusion. As shown in the graph below the plasma concentration begins to rise until a steady-state concentration is achieved. The drug will then begin to clear from the body indicated by the...

Pharmacokinetics: Maintenance Dosing
Переглядів 6312 роки тому
Watch this video to work through a maintenance dosing problem. When we give a drug, we usually want to reach a certain concentration in the blood and maintain it. By giving a drug continuously through IV infusion, we can maintain the concentration by countering the rate of elimination. However, elimination tends to be modeled by a first-order process, while infusion is zero-order. As we infuse ...

Переглядів 2,7 тис.2 роки тому
Drugs can have vastly different chemical properties that affect their optimal formulations and dosing. Bioavailability helps us think about how much of any dose is actually entering the bloodstream. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) helps us quantify drug exposure over time. Watch this video to learn about the area under the curve and how the trapezoidal method can predict the area under the curve...

Pharmacokinetics: Laplace Transformations
Переглядів 1,4 тис.2 роки тому
Watch this to learn more about Laplace Transformations, its relation to first-order rates and drug compartment dissolutions. The Laplace Transformation is used in pharmacokinetics as a shortcut, converting harder calculus into easier algebra and pattern recognition. By building models of biological processes and applying math, we can predict drug concentrations, thus aiding drug dosing. About D...

First-order reactions depend on how much substrate you have to react. More specifically, the reaction rate depends on how high the concentration of the substrate is. If you draw a first-order reaction on a typically-scaled linear graph, you will get a curve. It’s hard to judge a curve to see if it is truly logarithmic and extract information, which is where log axes come into play. Semi-Log pap...

When t = 0, should you get c =20? Now your equation gives 30. Does residual mean to subtract B stuff from the total concentration to get the A stuff?
