The Whirlwind of Diagnostic Tests For a Colorectal Cancer Patient

  • Want to know what tests you may have to undergo after a cancerous tumor is found in your rectum? I’ll walk you through the five tests that I had done in the first two weeks following my diagnosis. These tests were used to find out my cancer staging (was it deep in the rectal lining, had it moved to lymph nodes, had it spread to other organs?) and also to assist doctors on my team in getting a better view of what my insides looked like for different treatments.
    Here is the list of all the tests and the dates (all in 2016) I went in for each:
    #1 - CT Scan on May 31
    #2 - Rectal Endoscopic Ultrasound on June 3
    #3 - Mapping CT Scan on June 8
    #4 - MRI on June 13
    #5 - PET Scan on June 15
    In case you missed my last video detailing my diagnosis, here is the link to get you up to speed: • The Story of My Colore...

      If it runs in your family your doctor may prefer (at least for your first test) that you get a colonoscopy, but definitely talk to your doctor about getting screened ASAP. They will know for sure what test is best. And of course, any test is better than none.

    My cologaurd test came back positive but my doctor didn't realize i had internal hemorrhoids she said that can give a false positive i had a colonoscopy 5 years ago it was normal ,anyway i have another colonoscopy next week just wondered what you thought about cologaurd tests.

    • @SurvivorJelena
      @SurvivorJelena  2 роки тому +1

      I think the cologuard test is a great option to screen people that aren’t high risk and/or otherwise would be pretty hesitant to get screened. The prep for a colonoscopy scares some people so doing a test without the prep can get more people screened. Of course, if it comes back positive you have to get a colonoscopy, but if you know something may be wrong you may be more likely to follow through on the colonoscopy. I hope it’s just the hemorrhoids that gave you the positive test and everything else is ok 🤞🏼💙

    I’m 22 male no family history but I’ve stomach issues since I took antibiotics on a empty stomach for a week around December and I’ve had burping some bloating and also had tiny bit of blood once on stool and I recently started getting some like tightness and slight cramps in stomach just the past 2 days but also haven’t been eating healthiest. Went to my pcp doctor and he suggested probiotics. I am so scared of colon cancer idk why

    • @SurvivorJelena
      @SurvivorJelena  Рік тому +2

      Antibiotics can really mess up the balance of your digestive system, so hopefully all these symptoms are a result of that and not cancer. The probiotics can help speed up the re-balancing, so that isn’t a bad idea. It can take a while for things to normalize, but if you’re still experiencing these symptoms after a few more weeks you should reach out to your doctor again.

    • @SurvivorJelena
      @SurvivorJelena  3 роки тому +2

      I'm so sorry about your best friend. Yes, there are other conditions that could cause the bleeding, but a colonoscopy is the best way to find out if it's any of those or cancer. I'm glad you're going in a few weeks to get a colonoscopy.

    This women had clear warning signs, including bleeding. and waited many months until her annual medical check up to raise any issues. Lucky to be alive. Next stage is usually spreading to liver. Main lesson is .... don’t follow her own actions.

    • @SurvivorJelena
      @SurvivorJelena  3 роки тому +22

      Hindsight is 20/20. When you’re an otherwise healthy young person with no family history and most symptoms aren’t consistently present it’s easy to brush off them off as something minor.

    • @b-ryemendez8335
      @b-ryemendez8335 4 місяці тому +5

      This woman has a name, why click on her video if you’re gonna be rude?
      When someone is young and otherwise healthy cancer is not the first thing that comes to mind. More than half of all cancer patients are over 50, Jelena was 33 when the symptoms started and her symptoms are non specific and varied it could mean anything, there was no pain. What do you mean waited many months she went to the doctor for only one symptom which was gas and a bit of bleeding. What else could she tell the doctor? Rectal bleeding and blood in the stool is so common and it’s usually not cancer. Nobody is psychic, there was no pain associated with the blood.
      Most doctors may brush off a patient who thinks they have cancer due to their young age, and if they don’t have a family history they may tell you it’s IBS which is an umbrella term for multiple gastric problems.

    • @djnoneofyourbusiness525
      @djnoneofyourbusiness525 Місяць тому

      “Clear warning signs” aren’t clear when you’re at this age.
      I’m 32 and I’ve lived with IBS for years but I recently noticed unusual bowel symptoms that alarmed me. I’m used to diarrhea, excessive gas, and abdominal cramps. However, I became concerned when I experienced serious constipation out of the blue along with gas bloating along my left abdomen.
      It took three ER trips and two follow-up appointments of being told I’m fine and it’s my anxiety before I pushed back and insisted on a GI referral from my PCP.
      My symptoms have been back and forth for two months and I have my GI appointment next month- I’m hoping that nothing serious is going on. I can tell you that being in your early 30s and trying to get answers is an uphill battle. You’re dismissed, ignored, and brushed off and it’s why many younger adults aren’t diagnosed until their cancer has reached an advanced stage.
      Colon cancer screening age needs to be lowered and medical providers need to LISTEN to their patients.
