Timpani Mallets on Cymbals?...

  • Considering there are tons of mallets available for use on cymbals, I test out a few common mallets and compare overall sound quality. Marimba mallets create a fast, bright, orchestral sound, which is characteristic of yarn mallets. Timpani mallets vary greatly from soft to hard, and Vic Firth's "Dual Tone" stick/mallets create a very nice, dark wash of sound. Tell me which ones you like! NEW VIDEO EVERY FRIDAY AFTERNOON!

    Thank you! I was just about to purchase some mallet sticks, and I wasn't sure which to go for. This was short, sweet, and confirmed everything I needed to know. Great video.

    Hey they work, & they're very expressive so you get a better nuance out of these Mallets. They're quite useful

    HI. Greetings from Canada. I subscribed your channel today and ended up watching most of your videos. They are really helpful and informative, so I thank you for making them.
    I am wondering if you could make videos regarding symbols and hi-hat for apartments residents? I already saw your videos for the snares and toms, but I didn't find video for symbols and hi-hats. I saw you are using them in the videos. If you already made it, please let me know the name of the video. I am thinking of buying them, but i want to make sure i find the right one.
    Thank you Stephen.

    It was useful im doing heavy dynamic rides on fanfare for the common man. Using soft timpani mallets. Wanted to me sure I'm not damaging the symbal.

    Why not test the Zildjian cymbal mallets? I've had mine for years, they were an excellent investment.

    Great test! However, the "Dark" series might NOT be a great fit for this test, considering this brand line usually has its "natural" tone reserved for heavy hits. For "low" vibration (long sound sustain with no/low attack) on this kind of cymbals you usually get better results using mallets with heavy/hard cork on soft covers (like the Vic Firth used), but with very poor control for dynamics. For cymbals with "lighter" tones (like some Avedis) the results would be different, the medium mallets would bring a natural sustain with dynamics control.

    Maybe do a video about your hi-hat pedal technique? Maybe that'd be better suited for a longer video?

      That's exactly the kind of thing that would make for a great short video. I might have covered something along those lines in the tips for a better hihat sound video I did back in January.

    You hardly ever never use timpani mallets on cymbals. Use yarn mallets. They have yarn mallets especially made for cymbal rolling with wood , rattan or fiberglass handles. I am a percussionist with over 45 years experience

    Please do a video about floor tom tuning

    • @sccdrum93
      @sccdrum93  7 років тому

      That would be a good one. I think general tuning is a topic I've put off just because it's so involved (so many ways to tune stuff), and it depends on the type of head too. But I'll have to tackle that soon...maybe one drum at a time :)

      They are the Innovative Percussion CT-1. Pretty basic, but they've always gotten the job done :)

    An entire third of the video talking about what type of videos you usually make, with the remaining two thirds of the video being a whopping two minutes... Make sure you tell us when the video is about to end so that way we don't sit there and assume our device is frozen.
