Rob Brown another Drum Hack for coated sticks to help you hold to them get plasti-dip from local hardware store dip the back half of sticks in them you can dip about 3 pair of sticks for about $6 American
I do the same, about $6 or $7 for a can of plasti dip. I only use a thin layer (on Vic Firth extreme 55a sticks) and I can do more than 3 pairs. But it's great, opens up the entire range of sticks to what's otherwise a specialty stick!
Awesome! Been using Vic Firth SDSwizzle (mallot and stick combo) but the felt is really hard and I've been wanting a softer mallot for Worship playing so, definitely gonna try this on my 5Bs! Thanks very much Rob!!
Really smart. I don’t always need mallets with me for gigs, but I always keep a couple extra felts in the bag (just in case). Will start using this right away. Too bad I didn’t have them for last night’s gig, oh well. Thanks Rob.
Wow Rob. The sound of that swish with them mallets on it = heavenly sounding😇. This tip on how to make mallets would be a good idea for those old VicFirths if they're still hanging in there.
for the smaller sticks, slide some heat shrink tubing on, heat it up and BAM! it will hold it even better than slippery wood. You can do a layer or two if needed.
I totally forgot about this, because I tried it once with used felts. So of course they came loose. Buy with new felts and a bit of glue this should work great. And that was one damn tasty piece you played at the end. The wash without stick definition gives it so much more depth. Thanks dude!
Wicked Profeshhhh!! without a doubt. Ya know, SEVERAL times I pause your vids to order the things you're talking about. I know, I could swing down to Guitar Center, but our GC...SUCKS BUTTERMILK!! I am worn out walking out of that empty handed or buying something that "might" work. 1 minute...Amazon...2 pairs of 5B....1 bag of 10 cymbal felt washers …3 days...15 skins.
That's brilliant!... I actually can't believe I didn't think about that before, it seems so obvious. Yeah, mallets are like 25 to $40!... Crazy!!... I even have extra felts right now, and sticks that I don't use. Thanks for the tip!... literally LOL
Rob man (greetings from Mumbai) man you and rdvair (sorry I think spelled his name wrong ) have got some awesome drum hacks. For us Indian drummers we get all these equipments with a lot import duty thanks both (Trump and Modi). You are a life saver. I was about to throw my old sticks away. Super cool brother.
I've been wondering how to keep my stick bag more condensed and not so fat with mallets. My mimimalist approach utilizing a smaller stick bag. Thank you! ~ Victoria, BC.
Nothing too exciting happening here, man. Whatcha see is whatcha get. I did do a full home studio video a couple years back. All that's changed, really, is that I have a way better camera now. But I do have a significantly larger viewer base checkin me out now so maybe an updated video is somethin' to consider 🙂
You can make your own promark dual tone with a larger felt end instead of getting vic firth dual tone with the very small felt ball end, and the best thing, you aren't stuck with the vic firth sticks.
On the subject of drum hacks and bass drums. I got a dw go anywhere practice kit yesterday. Its just the bass pad is made out of really hard rubber.its loud and like hitting a block of wood.do you have any recommendations on how to soften it down for better feel etc
So simple yet so effective 🤯 cool!
LOL I did this a few years ago and mine are still going strong

LOL! My Jr. High music teacher did this when we forgot mallets for our Xmas concert. That was back in 1976.
Really smart. I don’t always need mallets with me for gigs, but I always keep a couple extra felts in the bag (just in case). Will start using this right away. Too bad I didn’t have them for last night’s gig, oh well. Thanks Rob.

I have found grip tape works good too. One time used the wrapped end if my sticks and it worked great.
Man, I tried this with a 1/2 timbale stick and it fits perfect.
Really nice mellow sound. Thanks a lot for the video.
Thanks Rob great tip I really hate spending $30 for a pair of mallets. Thanks so much for all your advice...😊
for the smaller sticks, slide some heat shrink tubing on, heat it up and BAM! it will hold it even better than slippery wood. You can do a layer or two if needed.
Cool idea I never even thought of that idea. Makes total sense. Thanks much

Absolutely amazing 💯 🙌
Now that is nifty! Cool idea Rob! I have both extra sticks and extra felts. Gonna try this!

I've Been doing this for a while and if the felt gets off during playing the best to do then is to put a zip tie at the bottom part of the stick
cool mallet groove at the end - new cymbal sounding swiit :-)
Saved me $20 for some beers thanks dude.
Robs still in love with that swish..sounds bad ass fer sure.

Perfect tip, thanks rob !
Cool how the mallets sound on the china. Sounds like a gong.
Resourceful!
Great Idea! Happy Holidays!
That's a great tip! ;)
What mallet is best for tuning drums there's soft, medium, and hard felt mallets? Or would that do the same thing for the cymbal felt.
Nice Video Beatdown! What about a new Recording Room Tour?🥁

Rob Brow
Great idea! The only thing I wouldn't like is, I don't like the feel of having a tapered butt end by flipping the stick over.
Love the performance
Ooooh, that Swish cymbal.
Holy sh...! Yes it´s fantastic!
Already knew what he was going to do....
Wicked Proswisssshhhhhh
