I love how this is often a naturally evolving conversation, uninterrupted by the (great!) interviewer...the dynamic is so insightful and interesting to watch. Wish all the roundtables moderators would embrace this style.
I love and admire all these woman, but it would have been so sick to see Mindy Kaling on the table too! Both a comdey writer, actress, and producer who has been killing it for like the past 15 years. She was the only woman AND person of colour who wrote for the office when it started in 2005 - she deserves so much more credit and attention
Mindy Kaling is amazing! The participants for these roundtables are often selected based on the winners of a recent award show--I'm guessing the 2019 Emmy's for this one. Mindy is in the 2014 Emmy roundtable.
Phoebe Walker-Bridge is a powerhouse. She’s the real deal and she deserves all the respect and recognition she can get. What a genius she is. These women play cultural icons, archetypes for all of humanity. This creates multi dimensionally relevant, keen observations of the feminine condition. So worth the time. Real wisdom to live by.
@@bigfan1041 it's more of a table for discussion regarding their careers/ experience in the industry, no need to shove your worldview onto everything. there's a difference between acting within this genre for film vs being a stand alone comic.
loving the soft spoken, gentle female support vibe at this table. especially juicy when they started talking about their relationship with femininity growing up at the end, wish they'd had time to talk that out more
I loved every second of this chat. I felt like I was sitting at the table with them. Even down to the way the audio would cross fade some of their mics during their side chats and comments. It transitions at the exact right time as my focus was being drawn from one chat to the other. I love all the honesty. So many of the experiences and realizations they point out are things I’m just now realizing in my own life. This is affirming all the work I’ve been doing to really know myself, what I care about, and what I want.
I interpreted Regina’s comment around 8:00 as she was at the top of the “black Hollywood list” and as of recent years, she’s ascended to a wider audience, but no longer the top choice as she competes with majority white women now. Did anyone else have this same interpretation?
Yeah it's the same with Taraji P. Henson. In the "Urban Community" she's an A'lister, but she's more of B or C in the main stream. It's kind of sad really.
Antoinette Gabriel it is, but there’s been a ton of growth these past few years. Kerry Washington kind of led the charge with scandal, then TPH, then Viola Davis, and a few more. It’s great seeing more more black and brown faces on screen.
@@SeanSpencerr Yes! Kerry Washington is my favorite. Zoe Saldana is one of my favorite actresses too (even though I think she's said some questionable things). I'm so happy that people are starting to see that ethnic people have so much talent, and that we can be in Sci-fi, action, and mainstream movies. For so long we were limited to slave movies, "hood dramas", and Tyler Perryesque movies. While they add to our culture, we can do so much more than that.
Antoinette Gabriel well spike lee has been doing way more than that for over 30 years. Plus things like “Hood movies” are goodfellas and The Godfather for white ppl. Why are they allowed to elevate their gangster movies but black folks can’t? I don’t like Tyler perry movies but I’ve seen plenty of similar movies by white ppl become classics. I think we’re usually really unfair to black artists and undervalue the art that represents us but elevate others. Mainstream just means white ppl hold it up as special too and I don’t think that’s necessary for great art.
@@iansmart4158 Oh no, I totally agree. That's why I said those types of movies add to the culture because those are things we experience everyday. I just feel that we've been put in a box and the world thinks that's all we can do. Why have there only been a hand full of ethnic superhero movies? Why can't we have more sci-fi movies with ethnic characters as the lead. As a kid, and even now, I love sci-fi and it's disappointing that it's hard to find characters that look like me in mainstream movies. For me it's about representation and giving other people the opportunity to have the level of success as white actors.
I've been bingeing Roundtable series and wow, I must say, this is my favourite one yet! What a line up! And what an engaging discussion! Most got to actually speak with each other and and not just to the one seating next to them or across them. This is what round tables are for!
What a great group of women. I was gripped the whole way through. They all had so much respect for each other. It also gave me a whole lot of new stuff to find and watch. I really want Phoebe and Natasha to write something with Maya as the lead.
At first when I clicked the thumbnail and realized it was over an hour long, I thought "Oh hell to the no. Ain't no way I'm watching this whole thing!" and then the next thing I knew, the interviewer was thanking all the ladies for joining the discussion. This was good, so glad I stuck around for the entire piece.
I understand and wasn't implying that's what u were saying.. nevertheless that's what we hear when basically we beening told we don't sound "black" which I've actually been told those exact words...
Oshun357 We? I didn't take it that way at all. And I've experienced both. The timbre of your voice has nothing to do with your race. Sometimes a compliment is just a compliment. And 'we' are not a monolith - we don't all hear what you heard, no offence. ✌🏿
Tiffany talking about how she's not yet seen a show about "a female comedian navigating the men's world of mainstream comedy" while Alex Borstein from Maisel was sat right there??? MIND BLOWING.
Yeah. I was laughing because it’s obvious she doesn’t know the plot of the show. As she was listing off the things she wants to see I was just thinking of all the ways Maisel has addressed it.
@37:18 Phoebe Waller-Bridge says "No"' but she nods 'Yes'. Her inner desire creeping out with the sensible answer she always had prepared. I think she really wants to do another season but she knows that it had a perfect end in season 2. As much as I want Fleabag to return, I sort of understand why she says she won't do it again. @@AdamC2013 Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is all about her dealing with her family and marriage while trying to pursue standup comedy as a woman. @@sebastiano728 Do you really think they all sat and watched The Last OG? Seriously doubtful. MMM is also a period piece, it is set in the past. I died when Tiffany describe the show she wants to make that she doesn’t think has ever been done before… and then proceeds to describe the whole plot of the Marvelous Mrs Maisel!! Alex Borstein’s face!! 😂😂😂
So great and important the message Jane was expressing about our culture not valuing and hiding the sexual experiences of older women. It's great. Very funny and witty.. I just turned 35 and watched it with my mid 70s mother.. We both loved it. They're just powerhouse women that you just fall in love with. Regardless of age.. But the age just adds more deliciousness

I love these ladies and the work they’re doing. Plus seeing people bonding irt and the relationships already formed prior to this is one of my fav parts, lol.
Phoebe owns the round table. Wow, the way she explains her trip through her peaks and valleys really pulls you in. Difficult to disconnect from this roundtable so long as she's talking.
i feel like the comments saying tiffany was describing the marvelous mrs maisel are kind of obtuse? obviously the show tiffany described would be nothing like the marvelous mrs maisel despite having an overlapping concept. in what universe could one listen to tiffany describe what would clearly be a semi autobiographical show and think mrs maisel already did it? whether she's seen the marvelous mrs maisel or not her point about not seeing her own reality of being a female comic on screen definitely still stands and id Love to eventually see her own tv show about it. Anyway, this roundtable was absolutely delightful
Ppl seem to think her specific brand of comedy in today’s world (as well as her being a brash black woman) is somehow the same as the kind of jokes and culture mrs maisel represents. I don’t think they mean anything by it but it is a lil bit of a false equivalency in their part.
I was thinking the exact same thing! I know Haddish's world of comedy would be entirely modern and different in feel to Maisel, but period pieces are almost always a reflection of modern society. Also, literally every single one of the storylines Haddish outlined have already been done by Maisel. It felt super awkward, and I was begging someone to make a joke about how she's basically describing Maisel.
First, I never heard of Mrs. Maisel, so there's that. Second, there are dozens of movies and tv shows that deal with similar themes and arcs, but present them in a different way. I'm just glad I'm not as jaded as so many folks are and can appreciate folks thoughts on its own merit and not try to compare everything. It sounds exhausting. Nothing new under the sun, so to speak. It's mostly variations of the same concepts.
@@broquietstorm1266 I understand that there would obviously be differences, and that you can always find similarities between different shows and films. That said, my issue was with this specific interview. It was rude of Haddish to not have seen or done research on the work done by the other interviewees.
Lol I thought that but I just took it as a show that would be in this time and more about her specifically so, the base might be the same but it would be a slightly different show and I’ll still watch

She looked pretty stoned, i didn't even notice till about 40:44
Maybe that's why lol
right?! wasn't her only awkward moment either! 53:56 Love how the rest of them maintained their dignity by leaving her hanging on her hypothetical "can I get a high-five" and the host trying to move on with her inflected "what about the rest of you guys"
I just love how Tiffany Haddish begins to explain the kind of show she is writing and basically perfectly describes “The Marvelous Ms. Maisel”
Alex's face is like "Okayyy so she hasn't seen the show I'm on at all. Sitting quietly now, being polite."
the way they cut to alex cracks me up
Every time Natasha talks Jane Fonda looks in awe, like that little clap she gave, melting my heart
Yesssss 💖
she is so proud of the new generation. looks like a great mum
@15:57
Tiffany Haddish: "Me and Trevor Noah?"
Maya Rudolph: "Trevor Noah? Yeah?"
Tiffany Haddish: "Yeah.. I would like that... put it out in the universe"
I can't stop laughing at her face expressions!!!!
She finally made it official! She had that interview with him and the chemistry was friggin incredible! I need them to get a move on that ship!💖
@PurelyAfrican wow, very unhood rat of you. She's a nice person for what we can all see, you may not like her personality but, damn.
He's single now, so....
@@silverio7 She didn't say anything a man doesn't say. If Trevor or Michael said something like that in the same way I'm sure people would take it as a joke as many did here. Well I personally don't see anything wrong, can't speak for others.
@@BlackGirlMarvel I see nothing wrong neither, i'm saying that a man today say that in an interview he is out of business. Even if it's a joke
This was wonderful. Tiffany Haddish 'forgetting' her purse at auditions is probably the best thing I've ever heard. I'm blown away by Phoebe Waller-Bridge's intelligence. I adore Jane Fonda's vulnerability and dignity. I need Alex Borstein to be my real life friend. Maya Rudolph is a genius. And on a shallow note, holy crap is Ms. Rudolph's gown GORGEOUS.
Ain't nothing shallow about liking a gown, friend 😊 own that. It's not shallow to like fashion.
these 2 comments are wonderfully wholesome
Ohhh it ended right when the convo became so real!. Jane being so dignified and composed the whole talk, just to become so open and vulnerable and like all of us at the last second.
Bet everyone in the room could feel it! Like you're witnessing something. You don't see an icon like that open up publicly. Thank you, Jane.
This group of actresses is SO perfect. And Lacey Rose killed it as a moderator.
Natasha is one of kind actress, she is so authentic
I love all these people, but Phoebe Waller Bridge is another level of talent. I cannot wait to see what she does next
Yes but also.... Natasha Lyonne.....
I saw Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Maya Rudolph together and actually gasped a little. Two of my favorites ever. Hilarious goddesses. I need them to work together so badly!
And both clearly love each other
I love them, too! Initially i wouldn't have thought to pair them together, but watching this i thought they had really interesting chemistry. Id love to see them work on something together!
"The evening shifts when women tell their truth." - Jane Fonda
I love our truths.
Jane's eyes widening when Phoebe said "In the public eye, people can fuck with your words"...she was totally having flashbacks to the war.
The mind of Phoebe Waller-Bridge is pure genius. Can't get enough of her.
I love how this is often a naturally evolving conversation, uninterrupted by the (great!) interviewer...the dynamic is so insightful and interesting to watch. Wish all the roundtables moderators would embrace this style.
Natasha has the power of lighting up a room with her positive energy. She is truly amazing
I thought the same thing.
Mindy Kaling is amazing! The participants for these roundtables are often selected based on the winners of a recent award show--I'm guessing the 2019 Emmy's for this one. Mindy is in the 2014 Emmy roundtable.
Well this aged like milk
I just love how Tiffany is just un-apologetically herself
Idk why but the way Jane reaches for Tiffany’s hand at the end and they smile together just warms my heart
I teared up at that moment, so sweet
Phoebe Walker-Bridge is a powerhouse. She’s the real deal and she deserves all the respect and recognition she can get. What a genius she is. Every time she will speak, I’d be like taking notes haha.. also I was hoping she’d give a glance to the camera so she knows we’re there watching her ❤️ oohh and Alex Borstein is also a force to be reckoned with!!!
These women play cultural icons, archetypes for all of humanity.
This creates multi dimensionally relevant, keen
observations of the feminine condition.
So worth the time.
Real wisdom to live by.
Interesting choice not to have any funny people on when it's a comedy roundtable.
lol you cornball feminists are so annoying
are you a wiccan, lady?
@@bigfan1041 You keep saying that. Who would be your choice?
"We are all entitled to dropping out at some point" - This touched me. Thanks for sharing
Phoebe is so underrated. Fleabag is a masterpiece!
Funny how less than 100000 people watched it though.
Underrated? By whom?
Stoo using Underrated to describe actors who have won multiple awards
@@craftistic82 fr
I like the way Regina and Maya talk. So calming and eloquent and graceful and articulate. They have beautiful voices (timbres).
That's what ppl say to us black ppl to say " u speak well for a black person "
I understand and wasn't implying that's what u were saying.. nevertheless that's what we hear when basically we beening told we don't sound "black" which I've actually been told those exact words...
@@Oshun357 I'm sorry that you had to experience it 🧡
Regina is a Journalism graduate, you hear it through her communication (I’m one too)
Oshun357 We? I didn't take it that way at all. And I've experienced both. The timbre of your voice has nothing to do with your race. Sometimes a compliment is just a compliment. And 'we' are not a monolith - we don't all hear what you heard, no offence. ✌🏿
Tiffany talking about how she's not yet seen a show about "a female comedian navigating the men's world of mainstream comedy" while Alex Borstein from Maisel was sat right there??? MIND BLOWING.
Well, If she hasn't seen it then that doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It's not a shame to not know
It was hilarious lol
@@Stopfollowingmeplz8 Thank you, it's okay. I've never seen it I know it exist but haven't watched it.
Yeah. I was laughing because it’s obvious she doesn’t know the plot of the show. As she was listing off the things she wants to see I was just thinking of all the ways Maisel has addressed it.
That Alex lady is racist anyways who cares
Two icons, Natasha Lyonne and PWB, both in teal blazers. The new power suit.
Huge respect to you, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, you genius!!

a. I love how Natasha calls movies "pictures."
b. SHE LOST THE ROLE OF CURLY SUE?????

asapound yeah but haddish’s will be very very different hers will also be about family! So no one is doing that! Very different!
@@AdamC2013 Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is all about her dealing with her family and marriage while trying to pursue standup comedy as a woman. I'm not saying it won't be different, but every storyline Haddish brought up had already been done in Maisel. It was rude of her not to have watched at least some of Maisel to get to know a bit more about her fellow interviewees.
Sebastian Ochoa Mendoza I was being sarcastic
@@sebastiano728 Do you really think they all sat and watched The Last OG? Seriously doubtful. MMM is also a period piece, it is set in the past. Tiffany was essentially talking about making a TV show about her life as a comedian now. Both being female comedians would be where the similarities ended.
Natasha Lyonne talks like your local dealer lol
Well, she was one, at school :D
and it still sounds nice.
I died when Tiffany describe the show she wants to make that she doesn’t think has ever been done before… and then proceeds to describe the whole plot of the Marvelous Mrs Maisel!! Alex Borstein’s face!! 😂😂😂
I freaking love this moderator.❤️ She let's people talk
So great and important the message Jane was expressing about our culture not valuing and hiding the sexual experiences of older women. I think it’s more interesting to hear different perspectives from your own, especially when those perspectives aren’t often the kinds easily accessible as others and I’ll have to check out that show now.
It's great. Very funny and witty.. I just turned 35 and watched it with my mid 70s mother.. We both loved it. They're just powerhouse women that you just fall in love with. Regardless of age.. But the age just adds more deliciousness
I didn't like the way Tifanjy interrupted with " oh I fall asleep on the toilet" ...okay...
I wish we got to hear Phoebe and Alex speak more. They're ❤️
I’ve been waiting for this one for ages!! I love all of these women. They’re all huge inspirations to me as a young comedian :) can’t wait to watch the whole thing this evening.

This was a truly enjoyable experience to watch. Multiple generations, diverse backgrounds but so respectful, honest, great depth and moments of genuine kindness. Jane has been authentic her life, paved the way for many others. Natasha is such a joy.

I am fascinated by Natasha Lyonne.
This is one of my favorite ones I think! There’s so much respect and balance between all of them getting to answer, and their personalities all gel perfectly so they’re having fun, and also the answers are all so amazing and in depth. I love these ladies and the work they’re doing. Plus seeing people bonding irt and the relationships already formed prior to this is one of my fav parts, lol.
OMG Maya is so adorable and honest!! I’m in love with her and Phoebe and Natasha together! They could make an amazing dark comedy trio piece.
It breaks my heart that nobody is coming to Alex Borstein with projects! She is a LEGEND! I've been a huge fan since the MadTV days!
Yeah I was shocked and surprised when she said that. Never would have guessed it. I hope this changed after The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel though.

I don’t think they mean anything by it but it is a lil bit of a false equivalency in their part.
marvelous ms maisel is more of a period piece on comedy ... women comedian's In the 1950s
It was rude of Haddish to not have seen or done research on the work done by the other interviewees.
tiffany: "I haven't seen a show that's dealing with female comedians...[proceeds to talk about the entire plot of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel]"
Alex must've been biting her tongue HARD during that
she may have been referring to being a black female comedian without stating it I guess
I cringed so hard on that
Lol I thought that but I just took it as a show that would be in this time and more about her specifically so, the base might be the same but it would be a slightly different show and I’ll still watch
@Unlabelled Glass Jar you said this two months ago, so I really hope you've grown enough to know that calling a stranger 'sugar tits' is a dick move and makes you the worst type of person. It also distracts me from ur sweet ass
