How I make my green onion powder

  • This video I’m in the garden and in the kitchen. Making my version of green onion powder. It tastes as well as the onion powder you buy at the store.
    I cut off the onion tops, brought them in the kitchen and washed them, laid them on towels and paper towels to dry. We even used a fan so they get dry for dehydrating. Then they’re chopped into shorter pieces to fit on the dehydrator trays, and dehydrate for several hours until they are crispy. If it does not crumble in your hand, it’s not dry enough. Like if it bends and does not crumble, dehydrate it longer. You might have to let it go 9 or 10 hours depending on your dehydrator. Or even longer. When they’re all dried, put into a blender or processor to powder them. And that’s it! Thank you for watching!

    Hi Lisa! Of course, I liked the contents. 😊
    I never thought about dehydrating my onion tops. I guess it's because my daughter always have me harvesting them😂... She loves the onion tops from my garden. She says they taste so much better than the store bought.
    As always, thanks for sharing!😊

      Those tops were heavy and weighing on my onions and eventually the tops was going to die back and be good for nothing but compost. This way you can use them for seasoning.

      @@gardeningwithlisa I usually just chop them and dry them so they dont go to waste. It never even crossed my mind to powder them. You definitely gave me an idea.

    Thank you! My family is on the FODMAP diet due to IBS and we can have green onion and leek tops only. Not the bulbs. I needed to know how to do this!!! My youngest child and I started a garden for the first time this spring. Newbie! Now that it’s finally under 100 (TX) I can start growing these.

      Yes you can! I can use the greens from any onion to make Green Onion Powder. Bunching Onions, Leeks, and slicing onions. When they get tall enough, harvest them and dehydrate them. Be sure to get them completely dried. If you there is any moisture left at all, the powder will not store well. So, you might have to dehydrate for many many hours. Depending on your dehydrator. I think our ran for 18 or 20 hours. But my dehydrator I can't set the temperature. But you can totally do this, because as far as I know, you can't buy green onion powder! 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Thank you for watching!!

      Yaaayyyy!! Let me know how you like it!! Be sure and get your onions totally completely dry. If they don’t get completely dry, the powder will not store well. It will get hard like a rock. I’m excited for you to try out your new dehydrator! Let me know! Thanks for watching!

    Ooh! I got a dehydrator for Christmas from my mom! Cannot wait to try this! Can you dehydrate the actual onions into powder as well? 😊

    • @gardeningwithlisa
      @gardeningwithlisa  Рік тому

      Yes ma’am you sure can! I made onion powder last year with all my white onions. I also have made garlic powder this way. You just have to make sure it get totally dry and crispy. If you dehydrate for however many hours and you check them and they do not crumble, then you need to dehydrate more because it’s not dry enough. If you do not get it totally dry and you powder anyway, the powder will turn hard like a rock. So it very important you get it completely dry. So, try out that new dehydrator and let me know how it turns out!! Thank you for watching!!

    Love it! It must smell wonderful while you blend it all up. Do you also do garlic powder? I can buy that by the pound.

    • @gardeningwithlisa
      @gardeningwithlisa  Рік тому +1

      Yes you can do this to make any powder. Just have to make sure you get the onion or onion tops or garlic or whatever totally dry. If there is any moisture at all, the powder will not store well. It will get hard as a rock. If you dehydrate garlic you have to chop it up in small pieces and dehydrate it at least 24 hours depending on your dehydrator. Let me know when you try it!

    If you don’t have a dehydrator is another way to make it

    • @gardeningwithlisa
      @gardeningwithlisa  Рік тому

      Hello!! Only other way I know is to maybe lay them out in a sunny window so they can dry that way. That’s how my mother and my aunts used to dehydrate because they didn’t have a dehydrator. But maybe research to find the best way.
