    Thanks! I have not had the dehydrator running for a bit and some inspiration was sorely needed. My green onions look like they will be pretty abundant this year and soon they will be available pretty cheap at local farmers’ markets. What a nice bit of spring to put in the pantry to brighten a winter meal. Allergies have been a beast already this spring and now grasses are blooming. Prayers for all who are suffering and that your son is feeling better.

    Thanks! I haven't tried green onions (what we call them here) in the dehydrator. I like your premise to separate the green & white. Tip: I've learned, with many things, that if I overload my trays and wait a couple 3 hours, they've dried enough that I can then separate them more easily. At that mark, I check each tray. Re-distributing as needed on the tray. And, usually rotate the trays 1/4 to 1/2 a rotation in my Excalibur. Depending on the circumstances may switch bottom and top trays with the 2 center ones. For some things that take a l o n g time to dry, I may do that again at roughly the 8 hour mark.

      Does that cut your drying time?

    • @oldtimerlee8820
      @oldtimerlee8820 2 роки тому

      @@girlnextdoorgrooming Keeping a good air flow speeds up the drying time. Overloading the trays can extend the drying time. Yet if I can dry more at one time rather than running the dehydrator twice, that is another drying time reduction.
      It becomes a balancing act that you work out as your experience increases. Because of so many variables from humidity in the air to the thickness of the carrots you slice to the style of dehydrator, all affect drying time.
      Sorry for such a vague answer. It depends ....

    I'm asking this here, as it is your most recent upload. Let me start by saying I'm fairly new to dehydrating...
    I was reading somewhere that some veggies shouldn't be air tight if there was a % of moisture to prevent botchilism. Will conditioning help with knowing if they are dry enough to vacuum seal? I'm a little confused. ((sigh))

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому +5

      Fully dried veg are fine to vacuum seal - misinformation is being spread. Properly dry before storing. The thing is, vacuum sealing is not necessary for storage. ;)

    This is my first dehydrating project that I'm doing and I have a question. Can I make the onion powder once the onions are dry, or do I need to wait 5-7 days to make sure everything is completely dry first?

    • @ThePurposefulPantry
      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому +1

      Especially when you are just starting dehydrating, I recommend conditioning first. But if you let them dry longer than necessary to make sure they are good and dry, you can skip the step and just redry the powder after. Because beginners tend to not dry enough, they are often discouraged when things mold or when their powders clump immediately in their grinder because the produce wasn't dry enough to begin with.

      @ThePurposefulPantry  2 роки тому

      Dehydrated foods have an optimal shelf-life of 12-18 months. You may get longer out of some, others no so much (tomatoes, greens, fruits). If you want 5 y ears or more, look into freeze-dried foods.

    So much work. But worth it. You have to have patience which I dont really have. My cherry tomatoes take twice as long as the book says. Right now I am drying organic mashed sweet potatoes. Delicious. I am eating them faster than I make them. Trying to get ahead. I will try green onions and beets. I have a ton of dried cucumber slices. Not sure what to do with them. Cool, thank you. Never dehydrated anything before. Cant wait to try it. I have cilantro, mint, parsley and dill growing in my container garden.
