I Have the 25 ton county line splitter. After 3 or 4 years, I have split every kind of knotted crooked hardwood there is. Split rounds up to 30 inches across. There is literally nothing I can feed it to choke it. Having said that, I would recommend getting the 25 ton and putting the money saved toward a good used larger chainsaw. Or an new rifle. Or beer.

25 tons was not enough for me. Tree service companies dump on my property. Some of rounds I feed my 40 ton are well over 30 inches in diameter and knotted to hell. I grab them with my root grapple and ease it onto the plate with it in the upright position. I have had the two stage pump kick on with some of the trunk wood at the base where it’s cutting more than splitting. It’s rare but I have heard it. 10 gallon hydraulic tank vs the 4 gallons of the 25 means longer splitter sessions without frying the fluid. 25 is great for most but not everyone.

Also one thing to note if you plan on towing this around any distance be sure to repack your wheel bearings with grease they come with very little from the factory. The only reason I checked that was I had to do a set of wheel bearings for my buddy on his 25ton(also county line) and there was nothing left but hunks of metal and rust.

I also like my CL 40 ton. I did do a few things to it though. The biggest one, in terms of reliability, is to get rid of the OEM metal to metal coupler it uses to connect the motor to the pump. I changed the pump mount so I could replace the metal to metal coupler with a large Lovejoy style with poly spider. Two reasons, the metal to metal ones will wear out faster and it's also harder on the pump. It transfers the "pulse" energies of the motor firing to the pump more. When you have a Lovejoy coupler, the spider helps absorb some of these pulses. I also added a pressure gauge and I swapped out the OEM filter housing/filter to a larger one which has a rated flow capacity of the pump. I also added a couple adhesive temp strips to be able to monitor surface temps of the filter housing and ram. When you remove and look at the OEM filter, it states the max flow capacity right on it, which was nowhere near the rated 25GPM of the pump. This means the filter spends all of the time in bypass not filtering all of the fluid. I am now filtering all of the fluid with this much larger filter and housing. Seeing I installed a gauge, I was able to see where the factory set the bypass valve at on the directional control valve (DCV). In order for that size cylinder to produce the rated tonnage of 40 ton, it would need to see 3,850psi. I only have a 3,000psi gauge, but when I tested it, as soon as the second stage hit, the gauge pegged way past the 3,000 psi mark before I immediately let off. So it was probably set at the factory near the rated 40 ton. I ended up backing the DCV off a bit so it goes into bypass right around the 3,200psi area.......which is ~33 tons. I also adjusted the crossover relief on the pump itself to hold the faster first stage to a higher pressure. I've used it to split ~20 cord now and it has yet to even go to the second stage. I'm not even sure it has even seen 500psi. I mainly only split oak and maple though, so two very easy splitting species of wood. Anyway, here it is. ua-cam.com/video/ve_uzck-CL4/v-deo.html

Thank you for taking the time to make this video! Love your new splitter! I have all the same thoughts as you, get something with fast cycle time and awesome power! I live in MN, and this 40 ton splitter is no longer being sold at tractor supply. Hopefully it comes out for sale again this fall! Pretty cool you've got a brother in the tree business to get free (or cheap) rounds to split!

To the best of my knowledge I just bought the second to last one of these splitters available in NH at Tractor Supply. I was told by the manager that these were being discontinued and the Coleman 30ton was taking its place. I paid $2800 which is quite a bit more than the price before covid but it feels heavy in the hand and worth every penny.

My 25 ton has a cycle time of 9.7 seconds, and a flow rate of 14 gpm. Cycle time has nothing to do with the size of the splitter. Unless you are splitting some super wicked wood, a 40t is overkill for most normal circumstances in my opinion. For most homeowners, a 25t will be more than enough. Countyline is a nice splitter, my only complaint is the way they run their wedge in the channel, I foresee that also getting packed with stuff and being problematic.

    Great Video!!!
My 2016 Countyline 35 Ton was the largest model at the time with a cycle rate of 14 seconds....evidently I lose about 10 seconds a split but, I need to rest a bit between splits anyway :)
I agree though with the advice given on it as Size Matters for absolute sure. Mine didn't come with a Log Shelf, the Spring loaded Stand or the Engine protection cowling round bar piece - that's nice.... I did add a 50 dollar Speedco brand shelf sold at Tractor Supply which is a Very Worthwhile add-on if you use it at all horizontally. I mostly run mine vertically though but, the shelf is awesome when running horizontally. I also added a 1 dollar bungee cord to retract the Stand and that works great for me...everything still works after several years (2016) and lots of split cords later with an initial cost of ~ 1600 bucks for the splitter plus 50 bucks for the added log catcher shelf with a dollar into the bungee and so far I am pleased that everything I have put before it spilts easily with no problems for me or the machine....very glad I went as big as I did because going small on large logs is risky - I actually saw a 25 or 28 ton splitter wrecked from trying to split larger pieces with it, the owner told me he was shocked at the time - it had bent & broke parts - not pretty...currently the 40 Ton model goes for 2800 bucks or so.
You get what you pay for folks as always.

Well I needed tires. They dry rot easy. Can't be found anywhere but on the WHEEL at $120. & $10. Shipping each. Thats right...$260.00 if you leave it in contact with the dirt for a year. The tires are 4ply dot rated to tow 45MPH.
you can find turf tires...but not these. Only available at YTL!

What hydraulic oil are you using? During the cold months the sticker near the breather/fill port has a temperature rating. Automatic trans fluid recommended 32* and colder. Should be written somewhere. Other splitters say to use ATF in the cold and year round.

This fix is for your Countyline splitter. I found you a fix for your log splitter. Please watch this. Log splitter stroke limiter, Save the Acorns1264.... (there channel) There is even a better video out fixing this problem, I will try to find this for you. Log splitter stroke limiter May 31, 2022 We split shorter logs and needed a way for the splitter to automatically stop on the return stroke. Now we can start the return stroke and grab the next log without worrying about it returning to the full 24” stroke and having to wait 10” of nothing for it to touch the log. There channel is Save the Acorns. I think you will like this. Save the Acorns@savetheacorns1264.
