When Johnny was dieing, he was often pursued by the paparazzi and he was angry about it. The press wanted to get shots of him smoking or any other weakness.

I’d say It’s both, Johnny knew he wasn’t gonna be doing this another decade and Dave was obviously fed up with NBC, reminds me of Norm on SNL with Don firing him. Never trust executives
