    I’m VERY surprised that so many people hate Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck. I grew up with that version! I actually thought that the original Whammy was too scary, while I liked the new Whammy better. Also, the Double Whammies are still my favorite part!

    Temptation gets a special knock, because it's the first one I can remember where we don't learn the contestants' last names. It doesn't sound important, but it's hard to view them as real people, and thus to root for or against them, without it.

    How I would produce Temptation...... Use the Australian format, use envelopes for instant cash, Three rounds with a 30-second speed round, and a final round with 60 seconds

    Aside from "Hokogan"'s wackiness, I thought the American Gladiators reboot was a pretty fun show. Then again, I'm a sucker for shows with obstacle courses be it Spartan Races, GUTS, etc.

    This is a solid list. Though for the Gladiators...yeah...I'd rather watch the final season with the Ball Pit in the Eliminator course, and even that was faster.

    I kinda wonder if Gladiators 08 (which I personally didn’t mind) was partially intended as an answer to Wipeout? It seems kinda weird that two obstacle course shows would pop up at the same time like that even if they had very little in common otherwise.
    Also, being a Wall specialist was Rocket’s entire gimmick, IIRC. Most of the rest of them only doing one event was weird tho.

    Temptation DESERVED THE NUMBER ONE SPOT as THE WORST REVIVAL EVER. Even after seeing a few clips, it lacked the heart and pure joy that Jim Perry's $ale had.

      Temptation, from looking at the clips, looks more like an NBC game show from the late 90s or early 2000s than a Sale of the Century reboot. I LOVE the Jim Perry version

    2:34. A little slip of the tongue. Anyway that skit was "Tic Tac Toe" from the Bill Pullman episode, where two people just played Tic Tac Toe, and every letter had to be nailed to the board, slow and laboriously.

    One thing I hated about the American Gladiators revival was the fact that on most episodes, they cut it significantly, and AG fans had to go to the NBC web site to see an event in its entirety.

    I have to give a dishonorable mention to the 2008 show "My Family's Got Guts" Mike O'Malley and Moira Quork were the heart and soul of the 1992-1995 original edition.
    Also, the 2003 PAX version of Shop Til You Drop with the warehouse setting was pretty bland too.
    Finally, the worst show ever based on a revival of "Supermarket Sweep" and "Shop til you Drop" is "Save to Win" which airs on the CW on Saturday Mornings.

    • @RadioFreeCedarCity
      @RadioFreeCedarCity 7 років тому

      Save to Win is an interesting case...The blind testing round is very entertaining, but the other games used were standard "Sweep" fare, pretty meh. Bonus round is a good concept, but a little too quick. They should give the winning team one chance to change one of the two picks, or keep what was revealed. Neely's "OH NO!" after every wrong answer is almost "YOU WIN!" cadence, which loses the show some points, but I'd give the show 3/5 or 6/10. It passes, but barely.

      @The Dead UA-cam Employees It wasn't just Patrick Wayne, it was the rapping dragon, the childish music, Divorced Couples Week, the needless change of resetting the pot so that a second game would pay less than the first, and a misguided bonus round.

    The '03 version of Deal had one huge positive: the set was reused by Univision not too long afterward for their version Trato Hecho with the magnificent Guillermo Huesca who spoke to the fan community at Game Show Congress 4...in perfect English yet. Turns out he's bilingual. A part of me wants to see how he'd do hosting an English-language American show.
    The woman who served as Gladiator Steel, Erin Toughill, was my boxing coach for a while. They made Steel silent in part because Erin is an incorrigable trash-talker. The really funny part? She fought Laila Ali in '05 and got knocked the fuck out in three rounds.
    I tried out for CS '01 and actually got into the contestant pool, and probably would've been on the show if hadn't been cancelled.
    I actually went on Merv Griffin's Crosswords in protest of how pathetic and dishonest Temptation was, ESPECIALLY in comparison to the '05-'09 Australia show it's supposed to be based on. What a waste.

    • @newstarcadefan
      @newstarcadefan 7 років тому

      Wow, that's 100% interesting. That's a lot of neat trivia, and some personal experiences that you had. I'll be honest...for Crosswords...they should have stuck to the pitch film format, and had 3 players instead of the 5. As for Temptation...yeah that was a waste. Especially for those of us who grew up watching it on NBC first run, or watching it on USA network when it was re-run.

    • @HarlemHyena
      @HarlemHyena 7 років тому +2

      Adrian M To be honest, one show just edges out Trato Hecho for my favorite foreign LMAD adaptation: Geh Aufs Ganze from Germany. It was usually a sister show to Glücksrad (on Sat Eins, and again upon moving to Kabel Eins). They even beat out the Brady version in terms of Zonk mascots (Zonked dealers got a plush rat posed in all sorts of situations, much like the Whammy!).
      Between that and the 1-player Big Deal format, it wouldn't surprise me if Brady's LMAD was inspired by this.

    I attempted to watch Temptation once, but I barely made it through half an episode. This after seeing some of the Australian shows, where they did a great job. I heard something that in the pitch film for the American show, they were showing some clips from the Australian one, pointing out how big an audience that show got. Maybe there will be a time where the format will be given another chance, and actually be done right this time.

    • @WarioBarker
      @WarioBarker 7 років тому

      The pitchfilm did that, yeah. It also focused on the shopping aspect with barely any mention of the show being a quiz and completely sidestepped all the format changes the American show put in place.
      Oh, and one of the Aussie Temptation clips showed the actual Fame Game board.

    I would have put donnymid on there, as an honorable mention. Totally forgot about lmad 03, they are starting to figure out that old gameshow formats work, match game and the 100k pyramid. My only gripe is they are re doing shows no one wants re created, love connection, the gong show, to tell the truth. How about a card sharks revival or maybe tic tac dough, or hell let's make a 400th revival of password, but here is how I would do it, call the alphabetics round the 0 game, 1st time you play you go for 10k, 2nd time it's a 100k and the 3rd and the 3rd time you play for 1 million, but you have to win the alphabetics round 3 times in a row for the 1million. Keep the same format as password plus/super password. Also keep the cash word. Sorry for the rant keep up the good work Cyndi.

    • @newstarcadefan
      @newstarcadefan 7 років тому

      James, I agree with you on Pyramid 2002. Donnie Osmond got shafted in that format, worse than Bob Hilton, and Monty Hall got shafted in the 1990-91 remake of Let's Make a Deal. As for Password...i think that if they left it alone (unlike Sale of the Century) it would be a great 5-day syndie. Even the classic Password would have worked over the Million Dollar Password, that felt like Pyramid. Card Sharks on the other hand...all they have to do is bring back the two separate 20-lb decks of cards, and the survey questions, and everything will be good. Also they would need to bring back the money cards with the push rule and a new stake.

    • @gameshowguy2000
      @gameshowguy2000 7 років тому

      This is why CS '86 *beats* CS '78, that push rule that lessened the player's chances of busting on a pair.

    • @davidlewis7267
      @davidlewis7267 6 років тому

      I agree that Pyramid 2002 should have made the list-maybe #6? I was a huge fan of the Pyramid during the Dick Clark era so I was very excited about this revival. Unfortunately, this version, which fixed a lot of things about the original that weren't broken, was a major disappointment. Donny Osmond's hosting was the only good thing about it. I can't speak to The Pyramid (2012) as I have only seen it a couple of times.
      I rather liked LMAD03 and thought Billy Bush did a good job. I was quite angry when NBC yanked it after 3 episodes. Nice that the show got another chance six years later with the current Wayne Brady version.
      I never saw Temptation, but any version of $ale without Jim Perry as host would have a huge strike against it in my book.
      I am enjoying the current, Anthony Anderson-hosted version of To Tell the Truth, and The Gong Show with Mike Myers as Tommy Maitland, so cannot agree with you there.
      Battle of the Network Stars (number #7?) is a rather limp imitator of the 70s-80s original, which I loved, with no real sense of rivalry.
      Card Sharks deserves a revival if only as an apology for the 2001 travesty.
      Finally, that crack about "the 400th revival of Password" was nasty, unneccessary, uncalled for sarcasm. There have only been 4 or 5 versions that I am aware of, so it's not like Password has been done to death. Beyond that, I agree with you completely as to how the next revival should handled-Password Plus/Super Password format with anyone winning Alphabetics/Super Password 3 times in a row winning $1,000,000. Million Dollar Password was just way too hard. Allen Ludden would never have recognized it.
      The three shows I would absolutely revive are Card Sharks, Classic Concentration and Super Password (as described above).
      P.S. As for bad revivals, how about the 1996 versions of the Newlywed Game (Gary Kroeger) and The Dating Game (Brad Sherwood)?

    for me the 2003 LMAD jumped the shark when they did a game where the contestant had to reach into one of 2 holes and potential get something unpleasant. ie. one choice of holes had a computer mouse (which would win a laptop) in one, the other had a live mouse. cringe....... unnecessary and a lawsuit waiting to happen.

    • @Musicradio77Network
      @Musicradio77Network 6 років тому

      gameshowfreak2007 Never saw the 2003 version of LMAD, but I remember the original and 1984 versions with the late, great Monty Hall as the host. Both versions looked really good, and kept the same format and with an addition of "Door #4" which was an interesting feature in a bonus round where you can spin the wheel where you can either win the money either a double or triple, or winning a car, or you can land on a Zonk space, you're out of the game. That's what "Door #4" was a decent game in the 1984 version. The 1990 version of LMAD that I remember seeing for a few episodes, but it didn't last that long. The 2003 version was awful, and the current version with Wayne Brady is pretty good, but I have not seen any of the episodes.

    • @Musicradio77Network

      gameshowfreak2007 "Let's Make a Deal '03" lasted only 3 episodes, it makes "Flatbush" a lot worse. This was before Wayne Brady came along and it became a much better version of the bunch.

    It's not surprising to see a game show revival with a bad name end up getting so much scorn and mockery for its bad attempt to remake a classic game show. I am grateful that next to no other game shows had bad names despite being short lived. Yes, Tic Tac Dough in 1990, 2008 revival of American Gladiators, Let's make a Deal in 2003, and the 2001 revival of Card Sharks may be despised in terms of today's standards, but none of them ended up being like Temptation despite having negative reviews. Everything you said about Temptation: The New Sale of the Century explains why a game show with a bad name gets an F-. I'm sure that there are some game shows getting a F- in terms of the game show fanbase, but Temptation is the lowest out of them all.

    Yep Temptation was a lousy game show. I think a 5 game limit was ridiculous. They should have had them on there until they clear all of the prizes. Also a lot of the prizes on Temptation were not unisex. I can think of another you did not have on the list. Merv Griffin Crosswords had great cash on the Video Game but not on the show. The gameplay was good but the budget was too cheap.

      Match Game 98....yeah I remember that one. My NBC station WFMJ-TV had it on after the noon news (after NBC gave that half-hour back to the affiliates after Caesar's Challenge was ended.) They actually moved the show from 12:30 p.m. to 11 a.m. after Martha Stewart Living. As for Chain Reaction, I will go and assume you meant the Dylan Lane version. Because even Blake Emmons ended up having more personality than him. The only thing _good_ that came from that version was the final chain being a betting round.

    There may have been a revival of "Let's Make A Deal" that was at least on par with and possibly even worse than the 2003 version: Fox's "Big Deal" from 1996. That one was the first to try to make the show "edgier" with the added strike against it of adding the mechanic of destroying the contestants' property that MTV's "Trashed" tried a couple of years earlier (though, contrary to what they played up on the show, at least "Big Deal" reimbursed the contestants). In fact, I'm not sure which version went more overboard with trying to be an edgy version of "Let's Make A Deal."

    I am grateful that none of these Game Show revivals ended up like Temptation. I'm sure that many game shows these days remake the classic in a much better way. It took a while to do it for most game shows, but it will work out in the end. The later 2010's have Game Shows remade to what they are intended to be. Temptation was evil and it made sense to put it #1 in the The Top 5 Worst Revivals Of The Past 30 Years.

    In addition to all 5, there were other game show revival that got even worse:
    1. "To Tell the Truth (2000)" - I saw most of the episodes and it was godawful. Stick to the 1969-78 and the 1990 versions.
    2. "Beat the Clock (2002)" - I saw many of the episodes and it was really bad. It was the worst revival ever made and Gary Kroger hosted the show. It was on the former PAX Network back around 2002 or 2003. The obstacle course looked a lot similar to "Double Dare", and it was taped at Universal Orlando. Like I've said, I've seen enough episodes of "Beat the Clock", it was a complete mess. Prior to the 2002 revival, there were a few of them to capitalized on the "Beat the Clock" name. The first revival from the early 1970's was hosted by Gene Wood before he became an announcer for so many game shows, Jack Narz also hosted that show before he did "Now You See It", and third version from 1979 where Monty Hall hosted "Beat the Clock". These versions don't last that long.
    3. "Match Game '98" - Never saw that one.
    4. "Pyramid" - Singer Donny Osmond hosts the show and it went trash. Stick to the original "Pyramid" with Dick Clark including the "$10,000", "$20,000", "$25,000" and the "$100,000 Pyramid".
    5. "Whammy" - I saw the episodes on GSN back in 2002 and 2003 and it was not as good as the original version of "Press Your Luck". By all means, stick to the original.
    6. "Win, Lose or Draw (2014)" - I've seen bits and pieces of the show, and it was a complete disgrace to the original. I remember the original "Win. Lose or Draw" when Vicki Lawrence hosted the daytime version while Burt Convy also did the syndicated version, and it was a really fun show. For the 2014 revival on the Disney Channel, it was bad. It has young kids on there instead of adults. The sets are awful compared to the original. I might as well stick to the original "Win, Lose or Draw" instead. There were many videos of the revival appeared on UA-cam. Too bad, the show didn't last that long on the Disney Channel.

      Now see i actually prefer Elizabeth over Todd. To me hes always had this creepy doll vibe whos only there to get a check. To me it just seems like hes going through the motions with no realmpassion for the people of the game. He seems way too forced and over the top in everything he does. Elizabeth at least can fake some sense of empathy when she needs to.

    The original UK Gladiators was a really good show, comparable and in some (though not all) aspects better than the US, but they also had a 2008 revival which looked and felt very much like the US revival versions (very WWE-like). That one failed and was hated there as well

      Russell Wright The Brady version is a whole lot better than Bush. The 1990 version was even better than 2003 version. Wayne, Jonathan, Tiffany and Kat have that great chemistry together just like when Monty hosted it. That's why the show will continue on their 9th season in the fall.

      And I can't believe that a terrible show that tried to combine LMAD with Truth or Consequences introduced me to one of the most legitimately funny men ever-- Mark DeCarlo. (Before I knew of his appearance on Sale back in '85) At least he did better shows before and after this like Studs. :D
      I do admit that the 2009 version is great, but I personally feel Cat Gray isn't one of my favorites. Sure, he's entertaining, but I always felt that the LMAD franchise was just host, hostess, and announcer.

    Personally I find temptation a guilty pleasure of mine. Compared to Jim Perry's sale of the cenutry I will admit it is awful. The australian version of temptation was better then this version. Back when temptation was new I remember getting hooked and not noticing any of the problems the show had. And it's a show I can go back and watch despite all its flaws. So yeah awful revival but a mediocore show at best in my opinion.

    5. OBVIOUSLY this would be on there... nobody could possibly have hosted the show other than Wink Martindale, and Wink would've made it more interesting... and maybe had a snide comment or two if the dragon still rapped like a bargain basement rapper.
    4. I have to admit, I actually *LIKED* this one, as well as the original. It did some things differently, yes, but I thought it was a pretty marginally okay reboot of Gladiators. And even Hogan was pretty entertaining, all things considered. I'd probably have put Million Dollar Password in this slot instead.
    3. Oh God. I have to tell you, I have NEVER liked anyone else BUT Monty Hall as the Big Dealer. (And oh good someone else remembers Steve Beverly's old website other than myself.) I *think* this was the one that Monty was talking about taking over halfway through? Or was that the 90 version?
    2. I legitimately thought you were referring to the horrid Million Dollar Pyramid... oh, I'm sorry, I meant PASSWORD as one of the two top awful cream of the crap shows. That one I *never* liked. It was way too much like Pyramid and not enough like Password for my liking. And add on top of that the horrendous hosting of Regis Philbin. Sorry buddy, stick with Millionaire specials. You already set a low bar for set design (that actually got cleared by the new Love Connection's horrid copied-&-pasted set design from DOND). As for Card Sharks 01... holy shit. I cannot disagree with that choice. Even the limited clip you showed gave me the willies, and I never saw that garbage.
    1. Oh God, Temptation was absolutely horrid. That one I will NOT disagree with you on.

    Man, LMAD '03 sucked! Thank goodness when it moved to CBS in 2009 with the current version, they avoided the same pitfalls the NBC version had.. and that's why the current version is at 8 years and still going, while the NBC version only went 3 eps...

      Gregory that is true. Plus since this is CBS's 5-day-a-week show with The Price is Right, they did drop the pricing games element (As now Fremantle Media owns both shows, and want to avoid confusion). As for the 2003 revival...yeah...that just stunk on ice.

      Bryce Landon And don't forget "Beat the Clock (2002)", a game show hosted by Gary Kroger, and it was an okay show, but the games are worse than the previous versions of the show. They kept the same format and everything was fine. It was taped at Universal Orlando, and it was one of the worst revival in the last 30 years. "Win, Lose Or Draw (2014)" was the worst revival to a classic game show where celebrities from the Disney Channel shows played the game along with younger contestants. The gameplay got worse and worse and it totally ruined the classic formula. I should stick to the original with Burt Convy and Vicki Lawrence.
