My Dialog cc came with one cartridge instead of box of a box of 5. My unit is black with a Broad nib. I did get the leather pouch and booklet. The trap door seal isn’t airtight which explains why you do get a slight hard start. I’ve been using Pelikan Schwartz black ink. I like the weight and girth.
It looks so modern and the color looks satiny and deep. But it also reminds me of a pepperoni stick. I must still be hungry. The nib seemed pretty good after the adjustment. I'll be tuned in tomorrow for the nib swap!
Great addition seeing you talking while doing the review, thanks for all your great reviews, there’s a lot of love (you can play “Whole Lotta Love” while reading) on every piece that you produce and great humor.
Good review. I owned a Lamy Dialog 3 a while ago and sold it. The issue is that it dried up after 2 or 3 days. It has to do with the retractable ball design - not completely sealed.
Hi Doug, thanks for the review - classy as always! I wasn't surprised to hear your criticisms re the Dialog cc - it's shorter than the Dialog 3, but still definitely a girthy pen! Mine is a wet writer, too, especially for EF - but I quite like it that way. Hope you're able to enjoy it for its good qualities, despite the drawbacks - I'll be interested to see if it grows on you over time!
I like it because it is cool looking and a cool gadget. But you know how some pens just make your handwriting seem effortless and beautiful? This ain't that.
@@InkquiringMinds Thus far I feel the same way, it's definitely a cool pen, but I have other pens that write better. Sad to say my favourite capless pen right now is the Majohn clipless "copy" of the Pilot VP...
Thank you for including the Momento Zero Grande as a benchmark for what grips you consider comfortable. That was a helpful aspect of the review. I seem to have a higher ceiling on what's comfortable for me. I was able to make a comparison with my Maiora Alpha, which I find girthy but still comfortable. This gave me the confidence to try out the Lamy Dialog. Wish me luck!
Great review Doug!! I've never really thought much of Lamy as far as looks. The safari or AL is about the only pen that looks decent enough to me that I'd buy from them. I know so many people love Lamy, but they just aren't for me looks wise. I like the nib you got with this Lamy for it's flex. I just got a Conklin Mark Twain Crescent filler in vintage green. It was either that or a Pilot E-95S. I chose the Mark Twain because at 82 dollars U.S. I couldn't pass it up, not for that price when some are going for 140 dollars. The next day it went back to 125 dollars haha The E-95S will be my next pen for sure. I also got the Mark Twain in a fine nib. I took it out and ordered a rose gold Omni-flex nib and assembly from Goulet pens. It looks amazing and more vintage with a gold looking nib than the black one it came with. Love this nib. It's not as flexible probably as a Pilot Falcon or the FA nib in the Pilot Custom 912, but it's rather bouncy and I can get some decent line variation with it. I also bought a set of Iroshizuku Inks. It came with three different 15ml glass bottles of ink. Kon-Peki, Take-Sumi, and Tsuki-Yo. I put the Kon Peki in my Mark Twain and love it. Should of listened to your gushing over it a long time ago. I put the Take-Sumi in my Conklin cracked ice duragraph and love it as well. Can't wait to try the Tsuki-Yo. It really does seem like the Iroshizuku inks are well lubricated and just more slippery through feeds and nibs. Feels like my nibs are more smooth with those inks running through them too. Do you have any recommendations on red ink? I want a deep red not a dark or maroon color I already have Oxblood. I want like a nice really red, red color Like a Cardinal Bird. Thanks for the reviews and keep them coming.
Thanks for sharing, William! You already have my favourite reddish ink; Oxblood. The Iroshizuku inks are incredible and Kon-Peki is by far my favourite of the collection.
Thanks for this review. I’d been thinking of purchasing this pen and your review gave me some pause, as I don’t particularly like a wet nib, and I’m certainly not as brave as you to start tuning one, however, the beauty and the engineering has me won over and I think I’ll go ahead and pull the trigger. Thanks again
Thank you, Doug. It is a very informative review. I had considered purchasing this pen but like you my hands are medium - small. Such a large width of the barrel without any contour would not be for me. My largest width pen is the Sailor King of Pen and is a joy to use. I thought I would get the Leonardo Momento Zero Grande and your recommendation makes me convinced that is the way to go.
Nice pen - beauty of a nib. I think the "visual effect" of the pen looking slimmer is because of the colors. Darker colors will always make things look slimmer / smaller. White will always make things bigger than they are.
This is my most (and the only) desirable Lamy, but I was relieved when you said it’s a little too chunky.. I couldn’t have comfortably held this in my small hand.. More importantly I had to sell my property to afford it here in India 😉
Hi Doug, first off, Happy Birthday for the other day c: I'm sorry I haven't communicated in ages having a few mental health issues and problems at work (hospitality blues). Anyways, so now you're a GoldSpot spokesperson. Does this mean you're going to save Tom (a reference to Pen Boy Roy's podcast, haha)? Chels
Your reviews are always appreciated. In comparison I have a Dialogue 3 as well as the knock off. I have a love hate with my Dialogue. The nib fails to stay wet overnight which is a major pet peeve of mine on any fountain pen, but even more so on a vp style pen. I also agree on the width. It's just a little too wide overall. As for the knock off. it's 'ok.' It actually seals a little better than the original...meaning I can get two days before the nib goes dry. I simplly dont have this issue with my Pilot VPs or even the 2 Majohn A1s I have. I have found the EF Majohn nib handles Noodlers 54th Mass so well for my writing, I just ordered another.
It´s one of these pens that I wanted to like but couldn´t. With this series Lamy somehow lost track of "form follows function". The Lamy Studio Palladium or the Lamy Studio lx all-black are wonderful pens though.
I’ve been on the fence for a while about swapping my Dialog 3 Matt Black for the newer Lamy CC Navy but you’ve persuaded me not to. My May pen list is now culled to two; the Leo Mosaico Hawaii and the Pelikan M605 Tortoiseshell Black. Thanks for helping my decision making.
Hi, I have a Lamy Studio with a steel F nib and an Lamy 2000 with a M nib, both write flawless but the 2000 glides on the pages, I been thinking on buying a retractable pen but seeing your review I think I will go with a Pilot Vanishing Point, I don't want to write with a pipe! Thank you for the review, Best regards from Romania!
Thanks again. So the Lamy Safari disappointed me but this one has my attention. I have that problem too but people say it makes me an interesting person!
I have 3 lamy pens but in the normal configuration,i have looked at all Lamy twist action pens & they look to me like you are writing with a stick of rock which i would find to cumbersome.
Hi Doug very good review as always. The pen itself seems like a well designed pen that’s thoughtfully put together and writes beautifully. I do agree with you that I prefer the VP style of pen to this (having also held a fake dialog) the way the vp fills my hand vs this is much more pleasant to write with over longer writing sessions. Lamy built a really nice pen. The pen is just not for me. It is a very beautiful shade of blue though
Hello, Doug! On my journey of the fountain pen world, I was finally ready to face the utilitarian purposes of a clickable fountain pen. I watched your vod on the Moonman replica and considered it as an option, until your review of its nib was in. I took a hard “No” stance at that point. Even though it is so much cheaper than the Vanishing Point! The Curidas was also a no for me. Too clunky, plastic, and a very long Knock. Along with the cracking issues I’ve heard about. In the end I decided on the Vanishing Point. Is it exactly what I was hoping for? Not really. It fulfills the need and want of a click pen. But I wish it came in more finishes that are more affordable. The Decimo has many finished but is thinner and not metal. So I will sit and consider one of those in future. Doug, you’re honesty and consideration is always so very welcomed. Cheers
I have had an Esterbrook J come in a homemade box that size... And I still don't get a box big enough to double as a steamer trunk... Doesn't make the pen write any different. Any sort of retractable nib pen, except maybe a vintage safety pen, really doesn't trip my trigger, and most Lamy are just not my taste, but they do a generally good job (nibs seem to be hit or miss on occasion.) Good thing that there is enough types of pens out there today for everyone to get something that they like. Hope you enjoy your Dialog CC! Eventually.
The box the big Lamy box came in looked like it was from Amazon. You know, you order a stick of gum and it comes in a shipping container with one piece of bubble wrap.
@@InkquiringMinds Same thing happens with eBay. 😁 When you order something tiny, it's regularly in an air freight size container that would hold a V8 engine. Thanks for the candid review! The design aesthetic vs the Vanishing Point for the price point was a huge turn-off for me; hearing your talk about the difficulties with the writing experience was quite eye opening also. In general I just do not appreciate the retractable pens, so I have not used either the Vanishing Point, the Dialog, or the Platinum (I forgot the name). Your review just reinforced my aversion. Actually I thank you for that fact because I will not waste any more money on this hobby! :)
