I think it's important to add that when cleaning the filter it's important to switch the heater off first for 5-10 minutes with the pump still running. This allows the heat generated to be pumped through the filter until the heater is sufficiently cooled. There have been a number of reported incidents of plastic melting / fliter baskets fusing together because of people not letting the heater properly cool down first. Cheers.
I have been using fluval a for 15 years but 2 years ago got Oase 600 and man this is a clear winner for me. Fluval are awesome but that prefilter cleaning Oase has it’s just awesome.

Thank you for this. I have just had my 600 delivered, and you have really helped me break it down befure starting to set it up. I never would have thought of heating the tubing either.
This is the best tutorial I have found on this filter! I’m new to all this and bought the therm 600 and had no idea how to set it up. I was wondering how to get the hoses to for best, where to put the inlet and output on the tank and how to get into the bottom motor . You explained everything perfectly for a beginner like me. It's actually safe to wash the main sponges in tap. No. The pre filter handles the cleaning of the water. The bio media needs to go on the bottoms for th flow. That’s why the filter has the huge removable pre filter
Fantastic plain and simple way to get it up and running , great tip on heating the tube but most off all leaving enought hight in your storage pree to get the tube filter non that would have cough me out lol , buying one this week , thanks for demo...
Followed the pro tip on the tube installation 👍 definitely made life easier for setup- Now if this thing will stop purging air every 20 seconds… Going to lead off with hose clamps and try to turn the flow down a little- then move on to the pre filter tube drilling mod to give it some more flow if the first steps don’t work. Little air bubbles can be annoying! And not going to lie the included plastic bits seemed a bit cheaper than other competitors, especially at this price point. Thank you for the setup video tho!
Hi, so we run multiple biomasters at the store, 250, 350's and 850 and dont have any issues with air after a day of it running from new. The plastic bits work well- take them out of the bag. On the larger units i like to run from the bottom: the 1plastic helix, 2 matrix or siporax, 3 purigen plus sera clear polishing pads, the rest stock. I will tell you the less you mod them, the better they run and super quiet. make sure your hoses are super straight and not looped over. I even run one tank with the oase UV sterilizer, but all the hoses are very vertical. Ive see issues where the hoses are too long, that causes air bubbles.
@@natureaquariumsusa yeah I’m assuming air is getting in somehow the hoses are all but taught. I have since restricted the flow on the discharge and the intervals have dropped from seconds to minutes 🤔 so I will trouble shoot and report back. I think a little playing with the media some-maybe some clamps and improved flow might be the answer, what has me scratching my head is how turning down the flow improved the purging. Got this over another fx6(never purges hoses are straight connnections are rock solid etc) on my 125 because I liked the heater idea…. We will see how it plays out! I want to love it Lol and not giving up just yet
@@natureaquariumsusa Ok long post- I opened up the canister again, placed my old sponge and bio from my last filter in one or 2 of the blue sponge spots (there ate plenty of them) to my suprise I also noticed on the 850 the pre filter tube has been updated looks like a darker plastic with more holes 👍 as my luck would have it I must have disconnected it from the top or it rattled loose in transit or during install. Fixed that and I adjusted the hoses as best I could without actually cutting them again and greased the main seal. Think I have it to an acceptable level now, just a little finicky lol dam Germans! Can I turn the in/outlet regulators to the minimum without causing damage to the filter or heater? Would be logic that it’s safe but I can’t find anything about that in the manual or on the internet. Great instruction video, I moved the outlet tube direct to the side of the inlet after watching.
Hi so the filtosmart is outstanding for what you are looking for. I should make a video on them. natureaquariums.com/products/filtosmart-100-thermo-external-filter
Great question. So the tube that comes with the filter can be easily cut with a knife. I am writing this away from the store so I am going off memory, I figure you would need about 8 inches to accommodate the intake strainer if you cut the tube down.
Awesome video! I'm actually planning on buying one of these in the next 2 to 3 weeks, i have 2 questions is, do i have to primer it every time after maintenance? And when i do need to clean out the tubes and pipes, do i just take out the inlet and outlet from the tank when im doing a full maintenance on it?
Great questions. So no. When you just clean the pre filter it holds the prime in the filter so when you re insert the cartridge with the pre filters and open the right valve it purges the air and is ready to go. In case of a major clean when you take the filter to the sink to clean the baskets the prime is held in the tubes by the tube valve that pops off when you move the right lever to the “unlock” position. If you need to clean the pipes then re priming is very easy it’s one pump. When you are ready to buy it, check it out on our website. I will post a discount code for the Oase canister filters here in the comments by tomorrow for anyone watching and reading this to enjoy and use.
@natureaquariumsusa thank you so much for help and quick answer! Really appreciate it. One more question, is the Thermo 350 too big for a 40 gal? I figured you can't have too much filtration. I'm also planning on that one in case I upgrade later on.
It is and it isnt. We use the 250's in heavily planted 20 gal, and we use 250 for 55gal tank. a 350 is real world good for up to 75 gals. Depends on your scape. You can always add the UNS quick disconnect flow valves to it as well. natureaquariums.com/products/delta-double-valve-connect-58?_pos=2&_sid=cabfd2093&_ss=r
Great video! I just ordered the 250 and very excited to set it up. Quick question, I have a co2 tank as well. Where do you recommend placing the inline diffuser? My guess would be close to the outtake? TIA!
Fantastic video. Question for you. Why do you suggest to have the bio media on the bottom shelves vs near the top? From what I’ve seen online most filters go sponge (mechanical) then chemical and bio. Wouldn’t you want the sponge first to keep your bio clean? Any info or feedback from your experience would be greatly appreciated 😀
Great question. The answer is that the pre filter cleans all the water of mechanical debris. The media included is of the fluidized type so the greatest turbulence will be at the bottom. The rest of the baskets are for bacteria, chemical filtration. Most of the gunk removal is done at the pre filter.

Hi, ive installed these with the stock inflow/outflow pipes and with curved Aquario pipes and I really haven't noticed a difference. Oases aren't a fast flow filter like a fluval fx, but they are steady even when clogged.
For those of you who want to install a Biomaster, regarding the tubing, it isn't necessary to 'cook' it over the stove. If you just run hot tap water through the tubing and leave it in the sink for 5 minutes, it becomes plenty pliable enough to work with.
I would go for a 600 or an 850. On our planted discus 130 we are using an 850 and a 350. Then again we wanted redundancy and double heating without putting heaters in the display tank as this is our main display tank at the store.
My only complaint with the Biomaster 250 is the hose/lily pipe assembly. The hoses are so stiff that they are difficult to route from the filter to the aquarium. The lily pipe/intake is difficult to position in a way to stay in place. I am making a better part to hold the pipes in place.
@@natureaquariumsusa Did that. Worked well for getting the tubing on the barbs. I plan on modifying the intake to accommodate fitting to the 12" deep 33 L tank. Am designing a mount so both intake and lily pipe stay put. Will be an interesting project.
@@natureaquariumsusa Hot water not hot enough. I ended up using a heat gun multiple times but still not satisfied with the results. Realistically, the outflow which is under pressure doesn't have to be resistant to collapse. Oase needs to rethink and redesign the tubing and associated plastic parts to function properly.
Hi. Any media can be placed above the bio at the bottom. On a side note the zeo should only be used for hospital tanks where you are dosing strong antibiotics. The biological media when cycled properly is what pulls out all of the ammonia. Zeo only can pull so little ammonia out of the water that it’s a waste. When setting this filter up just add a good quality bacteria and in 3-4 weeks the media handles all of it.
@@natureaquariumsusa thank. The reason I am planing to put zeo is , we are going on holiday for over 3 weeks and no water change can be done . I have 5 small discus fish in 130l tank. I thought I put zeo to reduce spike of ammonia .
Hi. Properly running biomedia with bacteria should handle it. I would place two packets of purigen as well. But use something like turbo start and keep the old filter running.
@@natureaquariumsusa is it Seachem Purigen Premium Synthetic Filter Resin For Marine And Freshwater Fish Aquarium 500ml? Which one is turbostart ? Thank
Hopefully Fluval are watching, the fx8 or whatever they gonna call it, needs to be easier to clean and have space for a heater. The fx6 has great turnover of water but is a right fart to clean.
That’s something that we are waiting to be corrected. It’s fluidized media. Verified myself with Oase. That’s why it’s placed at the bottom where it gets the strongest flow.
Hi. Make sure you use hot water for the hose connections. Also check the pre filter to make sure it’s seated right. Lastly reseat all the baskets so that the head sits easily without too much pressure from the latches.
Why are you putting the biological media at the bottom if you're gonna have sponges after them? Doesnt it make more sens to put the bilogical media after the mechanical filtration?
Hi. The pre filter handles cleaning the water. I am following the flow as the engineers designed this filter. See the water goes through the 60ppi pre filter and then first (from the bottom - up) to the helix fluidized media. It needs maximum flow and turbulence caused by the bottom layer - then up to the upper chambers.
The bio masters are 20% off till the 15th. With free shipping. If they show out of stock go ahead and order we are shipping out daily natureaquariums.com/
@@natureaquariumsusaI ordered because of this great video and saw they were on sale. Mines in transit. I’m setting up a tank for the very first time. Hopefully this bad boy lives up to this video. Thank you for all the information. I will be ordering from your company again I’m sure. Cheers!
No. The way the bio masters work the pre filter handles the cleaning of the particles. Then it needs to fluidize the helix media so it tumbles for ammonia reduction. Then you can do matrix, purigen and micron polishing pads. This is not your typical canister.
Thank you! I ask because my tank is new to me and I feel like my house smells like fish. I have the tank in the basement family room and I smell it on the first floor when I come home. I have had it 2 weeks and have cleaned the pre-filter twice. I did use 2 bottles of beneficial bacteria to get it started up and I have done a weekly water change. But I feel it smells fishy.
So what you are smelling is the ammonia and nitrite buildup. We at our store usually do not advocate cycling the tank with fish as it’s very toxic to the fish and can be smelly. Once your tank is finished cycling with regular water changes (10-15%) there should be no smell.
You are wrong about placing the media. Wather comes from the bottom,so spundges at the bottom, and media at the top... great filter, but a little noisey
Hi. Actually that is the way Oase designed the filter. Wether you agree or not you are entitled to your opinion but they designed it so that their fluidized media sits at the bottom and then the water flows to the rest. As a premier Oase retailer I will always show the way the manufacturer designed it.
By the way they are a little noisy when first hooked up and air is in all the sponges. After a day they are super quiet. We’ve sold hundreds of these and they all work out the same way.
@@natureaquariumsusa While the media they include is designed for use in fluidized filters the media does not move as intended in a canister filter. It is static and since plastic is a hostile environment for bacteria it supports very little bacteria - from an efficiency point of view it would be better to swap out the Hel-x media (plastic media) for something which was much more suited to bacterial colonization (good quality ceramic / sintered glass media).
So there are a couple of answers to your point. One is that plastic holds on to the aerobic bacteria quite well. The amount they provide if properly placed in the bottom tray out of the nylon bag will actually bounce around. This is by design and it works much like a wet dry filter with plastic bioballs. Remember in a fw tank with gravel or aqua soil a lot of the anaerobic bacteria will live there. I personally like using the the bottom tray with the helix plastic media provided and the second tray I remove the sponge and add matrix or siporax to supplement and increase the bio media. Remember that they use a soft plastic which is porous so it does house the anaerobic bacteria as well. The majority of hang on back filters use plastic for bacteria and are regularly used in bare bottom tanks and perform the nitrogen cycle just fine.

The intake and outtake that hang over the rim of the tank look very wide. How are they held in place?
Hi they are not wide at all. The tubing is 5/8" (22mm) and the plastic pieces are not much wider. Suction cups and clips are provided.
Hopefully Fluval are watching, the fx8 or whatever they gonna call it, needs to be easier to clean and have space for a heater. The fx6 has great turnover of water but is a right fart to clean.
Hah! I agree completely
Hi,
Do you mean water boil 190 Fahrenheit?
Yes. Warm water to less than boiling to soften the tubes. I water boils at 212f
According to the Oase user manual, "Hel-X Biomedia should always be contained in the provided mesh bag."
That’s something that we are waiting to be corrected. It’s fluidized media. Verified myself with Oase. That’s why it’s placed at the bottom where it gets the strongest flow.
Huge amount of air on initial startup. Had a time trying to get the out flowing consistently.
Hi. Make sure you use hot water for the hose connections. Also check the pre filter to make sure it’s seated right. Lastly reseat all the baskets so that the head sits easily without too much pressure from the latches.

Thank you. I have a new video coming out next week on the biomaster filter
Use waterchange water to clean the prefilter , in fact, anytime you clean the filter and media or you’ll kill the nitrifying bacteria.
Yes or use dechlorinated water.

@@natureaquariumsusaI ordered because of this great video and saw they were on sale. Mines in transit. I’m setting up a tank for the very first time. Hopefully this bad boy lives up to this video. Thank you for all the information. I will be ordering from your company again I’m sure. Cheers!
Thank you so much! Let me know if you need anything
Impeller not Propeller
oops, did i say it somewhere? unfortunately, i cant edit it now.
A different biological media like matrix should be in the top last busked after a fine filter pad at least 100 micron.
No. The way the bio masters work the pre filter handles the cleaning of the particles. Then it needs to fluidize the helix media so it tumbles for ammonia reduction. Then you can do matrix, purigen and micron polishing pads. This is not your typical canister.
How do you know when your biological section needs to be rinsed?
Great question. In my experience if you clean the prefilter weekly (only takes about 3 minutes) then about 3 - 4 weeks should be the interval.
Ok so is this a new tank? How long has the tank been setup? Do you have fish in there?
@natureaquariumsusa yes it is a new tank. The fish have been steadily added over a two week time frame.
