  • We had 3 Tricky Trees (say that fast 5 times) to fell. The beavers cut one across our 4 wheeling trail but the other 2 are hovering over an outbuilding. We pull out the Redmax chainsaws to see how they handle it. For those that don't know-Redmax took over Jonsered chainsaw brand.

Stan, I'm 65 and have been sawing wood since I was almost big enough to hold the 2 man crosscut. We didn't use hearing or eye protection and didn't need them. However, once we started using chainsaws, we started using PPE. It only takes one accident to make you wish you had used PPE. And as bad as an eye injury is, a gradual loss of your hearing sneaks up on you, until you can't hear your wife's angelic voice.

I worked as a full time logger for years and ran Jonsered for years. My dealer, who catered to full time loggers, always did a set-up when selling a new saw. Those pro model Jonsereds are now called red max and still Swedish and my dealer sells the two biggest pro models. They quit making Johnsered oil so my dealer recommends and sells Echo red armour mix and my Jonsered 2171 and Dolmar both run great on it.

Super sad they quit making the jonsered saws. The jonsered saws you see now are homeline type models for the weekend woman. Redmax look close but don't seem to be just rebranded. To me anyway.

Have insurance on your shed? If so, UPGRADES, when the tree falls. Premiums, Nah....don’t worry about that; just think & imagine your new super cool shed you’ll be getting😉. (I’m thinking don’t have insurance on the shed & is why dropping the trees yourself🤣).
Franky is a beast; & think he was grinning the entire time he was blasting through the trees with the chainsaw. What a great guy, & he truly loves what he’s doing!
Thanks for the review & info on the chainsaw...didn’t know Redmax made them. Still prefer Stihl chainsaws; as at 8 yrs old on my Grandpa’s farm, that what we used; & have stuck w/ them ever since.
    Cheers✌🏼

Also the saw frank is running is a slightly different design which is clamshell not the conventional crank case. Makes it cheaper but sacrifices performance. Same as a husky 460. The g900 is a husky 390xp.

Great video, really liked it. Love that you encourage people to use the proper ppe, even if you don't yourself. Also, Jonsered is great chainsaws, made by Husqvarna. I still prerer Husqvarna and Stihl though as that is what I am used to from school. Haven't been out doing hard work with a chainsaw for years now and damn I miss the smell of gas, oil and freshly cut spruce. Also, your cuts were really nicely done, good job on bringing those trees down.
Also, also, the chainsaw sounds REALLY sluggish, something is off for sure. Kinda sounds like some chainsaws will sound when it's just started in cold weather and you don't let it warm up.

I use Opti 2 synthetic oil which mixes at 100:1. I run it in all of my engines, including 4-strokes. I mix it in the can when I buy gas, and I add Stabil at the same time. Always buy non-ethanol gas for small engines. Look for a gas station which says explicitly on the pump that the gas does not contain ethanol.

The saws are all running surprisingly rich. In my area at 465 ft. of elevation, I find most saws are running lean when bought. Pick up a DTI-20K wireless tachometer and set your saws by that. Forget the number of screw turns and tuning by ear methods because they will sound better and better to a newbie the more clockwise the "H" screw is turned until you go too far and ruin a new saw. The tachometer is $100 and the refresh rate of its reading is fast enough to measure a two stroke. The fast refresh rate is necessary on two strokes. A cheap $20 tachometer has a longer intervals in between its readings of the rpm. Saving one saw from destruction pays for the tachometer. I'd be surprised if any of the 3 saws in the video are above even 10,500 rpm out of wood. Tune to 12k with your 32:1 or 40:1 and non-ethanol gas and your new toys should live forever. Just don't leave gas in them all the time and try to not runs saws empty when working them. I would not be surprised if the 1 bolt bar stud is actually just set in plastic with a really coarse lag bolt type of pitch. Over tightening the bar nut may strip the bolt from the housing. They started that when the junky tool less chain tightners came out. I work on Stihl Husqvarna, and Jonsered but have no exposure to the Redmax line and I need to check them out. The one that I looked at a while back didn't look at all like a Jonsered. I guess that's before the merge. I only truly enjoy the timber models of the three brands and all three build great saws when you get above 65cc. Great quality video guys and I enjoyed it.

Looks to me like they tune them fat from the factory on purpose. I guess what I would ask you is given the price point for their pro level saws in comparison to a Stihl or Husqvarna which one do you think is more dependable and will last longer? I use my saws almost every day and come back to my old 1990's Stihl 036 with a 28" bar for almost all of my ground work. Its the one on my little profile picture. I think it also comes down to personal preference. I've recently tried some of the Echo saws for climbing and I love the 355T for it's power to weight in a lower price than the Stihl counterpart. Just depends on what you like I guess.

They are just a red Husqvarna. I heard they were phasing out the commercial line from Jonsered and pushing them to Redmax. I went to Jonsered's site the other day and they only had a few saws on there all homeowner saws. I saw Costco had Jonsered saw and some other stuff all battery powered tools a while back heard some other big box store maybe Menard's was going to carry them but that will just be homeowner stuff. I have a GZ5000 and I can't think of the model of the other its a red Husqvarna 439 or a rear handle version of the 435T top handle saw.

Jonsered's been phased out entirely. Their website shows no live links to any chainsaw models. Only way to get at the info is an "end around" through a google search.

Yes, very similar. When I saw it today it looks like the 2 Jonsereds chainsaws I have in Norway, a 2040 (I think) Turbo, and a 2095 also Turbo I think.

Looks like normal!!! Frankie working and Stan watching!! LOL ( Got to bust on you Stan. LOL) I like the review. I Know of Redmax blowers never tried the saws. I looked Redmax up and the company is owned by Husqvarna. So kind of a mixed history. Chainsaws are not a major product in my area. Eastern Iowa just does not have the timber that you do in MN.

Looks like they have some great saws Stan. As for warranty I get 4 year on all my Stihls from my local dealer. The deal is you buy a bottle of oil or motomix from them and it doubles your warranty from 2 years to 4, but given how much stuff I buy from my store they usually just mark it for 4 year anyway ;D I guess I satisfy the oil part though still given I buy 5l packs from them

I agree with Franky about the bar nuts. I think the Red Max is the same as Dolmar and Makita now not sure on that. I work on allot of Stihl and Husqavara chain saws. Some manufactures set the saws rich for a 3 tank break in period. They also put in plastic covers over the adjustment screws on the carbs. 1 turn out is more than enough 2 turns out and the saw should be to rich.32:1 is rich in my book. But it depends on what 2 stroke oil you run. If you run a high quality oil 50:1 is fine. Some guys use Amsoil and run the saws at 80:1 or even 100:1 and I have torn down all of the above and they all have a good film of oil on the crank and piston rod. Just my 2 cents. I don't know why the would put only one pressure point (bar nut) on a mid sized saw that makes no sense.
