Great looking rifle! I looked at this rifle before I feel in love and bought the Wby Carbonmark Pro 6.5 RPM. Same stock company and barrel company. American Made is what matters!
yes we need more caliber choices. I think we're really behind the times. I was also wondering about the long term durability of the carbon fiber barrels. I haven't heard any talk on this subject.
I’ve had a 6.5-284 with an ABS barrel (predecessor to proof research) for over 10 years. A little over 900 rounds. So far it shoots perfect. Had a lone wolf(?) stock originally. Now it has a manners stock (piece of garbage stock, would not recommend).
Just picked up a 2020 Waypoint in 308 and very impressed. Very accurate. Ergonomics are fantastic. I have more expensive guns but I think this thing is my favorite. Do agree they need it in more calibers. Would pick up a 300 win mag tomorrow if they made it.
Agreed! I have it in 6.5 wanted to pick up the 308 but based on reviews it seems like they're hit or miss with accuracy. I'm very happy at .25 moa but if I got the 308 and it wouldn't do .5 to .75 I would be disappointed
@badkarma6 that's awesome. I been thinking about getting one for the hills here in TN. I want the 308 right now they are giving a 22 and the 308 for 2k.
I while before this kind of thing was common, I had a T3 Tikka Stainless Cerakote'd and dropped into a carbon stock. It weighs about the same as the steel barrel version of this and in 300WSM will shoot 2/3rds MOA reliably -- the limit being that 180gn bullet at 2800+ is no easy rifle to bench without a brake. Last week I fired a single 3 shot group for validation. 0.4" @ 100m. Great trigger, great smooth action and the mags are reliable and available.
I own a Ridgeline in 6.5 PRC and a waypoint in 6.5 Needmore. I really wanted one in .308 or PRC but after weeks of searching I just got the 6.5 Creedmoor. I have nothing bad to say about the Creedmoor I just didn’t want to add another caliber to my fleet. I didn’t add a bipod to the waypoint because I wanted to keep it as light as possible. I think it is great for the type of hunting I do and it is very accurate. I will add that when it comes to accuracy my Scar 20 is crazy accurate for a semi auto.
Just bought the waypoint in 6.5prc. Put a vortex razor 4.5-22x50 on it. Got it sighted in tonight quickly and got two 3/4" groups. Going to the range tomorrow to get it chrono d and shoot some steel. I'd expect it to do 1\2"-5\8" moa consistently.
I've got a Begara B14 in 7mm rem. Rifle and scope together less than 1500.00, It's shooting a 168 grain HP at 3100fps with 65 grains of 4350. If I do my part, it's a 1/2" rifle all day. I'm not sure I've ever shot over an 1" with it. I've got custom rifles that are easily 3x the price, and only one of them is more accurate.
I own the ridgeline 6.5prc and it shoots 147gr hornady match ( ragged hole groups 200yrds ) but agree 100% in regards to the stock , much rather have that vertical grip and a flatter forend … great review
I was differently interested in the HMR. A lot of great reviews all over the web. But then I picked it up….The thing is like a boat anchor! Which is not a problem if it’s only intended use was a bench gun or out of a blind. But I’m looking for a light weight mountain gun for elk hunting at higher elevations.
Even though it would take a while to save up for it I was definitely looking forward to this review from you. Another guy that you might know of in Joseph VonBenedikt gave it a glowing review too, and his oldest daughter used it in 308 to take her first mule deer 🦌 and it was a one shot kill at between 400-450 yards. It looks heavier than it really is but she didn’t have a problem and neither did your son. I agree with you they need to offer it in at least 3 more chamberings like a 300 Win Mag, 7 REM Mag and possibly 338 Win, or the 7 Saum as you mentioned.
I purchased the 2020 Waypoint in 6 creedmoor with the fluted steel barrel/adjustable stock. It has been the most accurate rifle I've purchased while using factory ammunition. Consistently delivers 1/2 inch groups with ELDMs and Federal Gold Medal Match. I also own a Fierce Carbon Rival in 6.5prc. I love it as well but would say the fit and finish on the Waypoint is better and I needed to load for it to achieve the same type of accuracy.
Some long action chamberings would make this even more interesting. I'm on a .338 kick right now, and I think it'd be fun to see it offered in 33 Nosler. I'd have to have a very long discussion with my bank account and wife about why I absolutely need it then.
This would beat the tar out of the Savage 110 ultralight. The 110 ultralight is a GREAT action and barrel, but the stock is very tupperware feeling, and the mag is cheap.
The action on my ultralight in 300 wsm Is like sandpaper. The forend is flimsy Everything else is good. I love the adjustable stock. Especially the length of pull. But if I had to do it over. I would have went a different route because I hate the action
I've got a Waypoint ordered in 6.5prc. I can't wait to get in my hands. 2k with carbon barrel and adjustable stock. The 6.5prc is close to the 7saum. Great review. Subscribing now.
These came out as I was considering a new purchase. I've held a few Springfield models(never fired them) and was not happy with the smoothness of the bolt. It appears they have corrected this with this model. I've looked at the competitors mentioned (fierce and Christensen) and felt much the same way as you. I however went a different route with the Seekins PH2. I did a long action (300 win mag) but was able to get it Cerakoted black and painted stock for right at $1900 so in the same ballpark. Build quality seems really good and it comes in with scope at 8.5 lbs (actually a bit light IMO for that cartridge). I've only got half a box through it of cheap ammo and printed a 3/4 moa group. Would love to know your take if you have ever handled he PH2.
Fantastic video. I've been debating on the configuration and you confirmed my hunch: non-adjustable stock, carbon fiber barrel. I'm going for the 6.5 PRC, that will handle everything I need. Keep up the great work!
I was always hunting in grizzly country, went from 3006 then bought a 308 Norma mag, kicks like a mule, really don’t notice while shooting game but target practise is brutal.
This had me really excited all the way thru the review. I love what I see and hear of this rifle...except the chamberings). I hunt and I was disappointed when I did not see magnum offerings. A 7mm, 300, 338 or if they want a newer caliber even a 27 nosler, something for larger game hunting in the back country or high country
Great video . I just purchased one in 308 and I can't wait to shoot it ! Beautiful rifle ! Action is tight and smooth, almost Tikka smooth. Maybe equal. I think the seekins Precision Havak Element, is its only competition. I love the 308 and have hunted with it , since I was a tad older than your son and it has always excelled for me . I can't wait to try it on trophy Whitetails and Black Bear this fall . Thank you Springfield and thank you Backfire for the great and inciteful videos !!
This rifle looks great. Thanks for the review guys, looking forward to a second review of this rifle after a few months wear and tear, hopefully it holds up better that the savage 110 ultralight did!

Greetings for down under. Great review as usual. I'd love to see a review of a Mauser M12 or Sauer 101, they are at about the same price point in Australia as the Waypoint. I've got a M12 in 30-06 and it will drop sub 0.75 MOA all day but then so does my Sauer 100 in .223. I love how accurate rifles can be straight off the shelf. Keep up the excellent reviews. Maybe when this crazy world opens up you can join us in New Zealand's south island on a Tahr hunt.
They make this in a 6mm creedmoor now and I think that would be an absolutely amazing long range coyote gun and antelope and whitetail and would be so fun
7 Saum is a dead caliber commercially speaking. The 6.5 prc , 6.5 creed , 6 creed and 308 win is way enough for every games around . Also don’t forget that they probably cannot warranty the accuracy with a long list of caliber offering .
Right at the end you mentioned manufacturers making too many superficial versions of the same gun. I agree with you 100% that manufacturers would be ahead of the game to add critical features and eliminate all the other nonsensical crap they do. The more you manufacturer the same thing the cheaper it can be made. Even if the cost is higher initially. Savage Arms is the worst. They make 10,000 versions of the same thing and none of them are real improvements over the other. They should take the best features they have and put them in one package.
weatherby vanguard, browning x-bolt, tikka t3x, bergara b-14, win model 70, are all good mid-range offerings in 7mm-08. christensen and sako also make them if you’re looking to step up to that level.
as stated above, there are several 7mm-08 offerings for this proven 42-year old cartridge. My X-Bolt SS Stalker in 7mm-08 is my go to rifle for hunting elk in thick timber. I love this cartridge!
I got mine in .308 yesterday! Omg I love it. Topped it with Vortex razor lht moa and vortex PMR rings. Taking to range this weekend for break in, zero, ammo testing
Would love to see some $1,000 scope and binoculars comparisons/shootouts. Maybe even some higher end stuff too. You guys do such a great job with these reviews. I’d like to see some more products in that enthusiast price range. Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica, NF, Tract, etc.
Yes it is pricey but you obviously get what you pay for and you seem to be more than happy with your Waypoint and you bring up some points about the stock and the carbon barrel which confirms my thoughts that it would be worth the money to get the same configuration 👍 btw awesome review and thank you for sharing your experience and uploading this information.
If you are lucky you get what you pay for. Too often that may not be the case. What about the trigger? That’s the failing of the Savage rifles. Is it a Remington pattern trigger? It should be. There is a wealth of aftermarket Remington Triggers from which to choose.
@@andrewnovo3078 I have some mechanical Triggertech triggers. That the manufacturer/brand name. Mine are “Remington pattern triggers” which simply means that they are designed to properly fit the opening and pin spacing in the opening at the bottom of the Rem 700 action and properly engage the cocking piece. I have subsequently seen that it is a Remington pattern trigger although it is wider than a typical mechanical Remington trigger. If the inletting of your stock or chassis is too narrow for it relieving it is a simple enough task for you gunsmith.
The Daniel Defense Delta 5 also promises a 0.75 MOA guarantee and is almost the exact same price. It’s got some great features. Would be interested in seeing you guys review it.
It's also heavy enough on it's own without optics that it isn't something this channel, which is focused on hunting, is probably ever going to review or even mention.
Good review of an apparent excellent rifle, but when you gave us the price ….. well ….. I’m on my way to 75 yo, hunted in my youth with an old Savage 110 30.06 my mom bought me when I was 16. I’m a retired U.S. Marine, Vietnam and Desert Storm veteran and a retired law enforcement officer. Lots of firearms training and pretty good long range shooter. If I were still interested in reaching out beyond 500 meters to kill my quarry I’d consider this rifle but when the longest kill in my lifetime was 348 yards (pronghorn) using an old Interarms chambered in .308, and the rest of my kills were 200 meters or less, I think I’ll pass.
Yes, 7 SAUM! Best all around short action hunting cartridge there is in my opinion. And I've never even shot one! As soon as I saw this rifle announced, I knew it was a winner if well executed but none of the chamberings interest me except possibly the PRC.
Since a year has now gone by, have you heard any rumors lately about this rifle being offered in any other chamberings, like maybe 300 win mag or 300 PRC? Great video, great review. Thanks.
I would really like to see a comparison between the Waypoint, Premier Divide and Elevation MTR. This would really help me in making a decision between the three.
First I’d like to say I love your videos. They are very informative. I have a question I would like your opinion on what rifle to get. I’m stuck between Howa, Bergara and the Tikka. All chambered in 308. The rifle will be used for hunting deer bear and maybe elk as well as just shooting on the range. Your opinion will be greatly appreciated thank you
I'm all in on the short action, 338 Federal would be a great chambering. Where I hunt 200 yds is a long shot. I can understand out west they need to hunt long range. I would love to, but it coast to much and I'm happy with 200 yds and in" PS I like the 350 Ledgen so enough said.
Yes they NEED to offer this in a 7 SAUM! But they need to make sure the action is long enough to run the heavy 7mm bullets! So it may be a better option to offer it in a long action in 7 SAUM
I like see waypoint in 6mmGT!!! Am 46 years old now and something I’ve learned hunting is some much funnier with smaller calibers. I use do 300wsm 7mag’s kick like mules! U do not need that to kill a deer. I was still useing 300wsm when 300black out was so hot and I have silencers, sbr rifles and I got my son 300blk ruger and no kick at all and super quiet with silencer and not one of his deer left the field. Me shooting cannon all mine left the field. So I actually used the 300blk and same thing drop a 10pt into in the tracks. I know placement is a lot of it. So when u shoot a gun that doesn’t kick and shock wave u to death you shoot so much more accurate. So now I shoot small 6mm calibers as my biggest calibers I love 6mmGT so accurate.
This was a great review Jim! I have been hunting with a 300 Win Mag for the past 15 years, but I recently purchased this new Springfield Waypoint in .308. What would be your recommendation for the best .308 factory ammunition and bullet weight for whitetail and mule deer on shots in the 100 - 250 yard range? I hunt in a very thick brush area, so dropping the deer immediately is more important than not damaging the meat on the front shoulder... Thanks-
The available cartridges are lacking. As an owner of a Christiansen I don’t blame you. I buy a rifle for a particular cartridge not the other way around. 6.5 PRC ok. Shooters are particularly loyal to their cartridges of choice.
A wise man once said it is better to buy the rifle with everything you want at once. Otherwise, you are chasing parts and spending more than you have to spend. So, yeah, 1800 to 2k might sting, but you pay once and have what you want.
Bergara is significantly heavier. If you want performance and a light weight rifle, go with the waypoint. If you only want accuracy and a smaller price tag, go with the HMR. For me this is a buy once cry once rifle, and it will do the job of being a good precision bolt gun and hunting gun.
The problem with a bunch of different chambering are it’s not a “custom” rifle, you will need different tooling for every chamber, and chambering tooling is very very expensive. I’d rather see long action calibers over more short action calibers and 308, 6mm creed, 6.5 creed and 6.5 prc are more than enough for taking any game in north America, the other problem with 6mm creed and 6.5 prc is barrel life, your looking at 1000-1500 rounds and the barrel toast, and a 700 dollar barrel without chambering and fitting that’s smoked in a pretty short amount of time
Been waiting for this review glad to finally see it

as stated above, there are several 7mm-08 offerings for this proven 42-year old cartridge.
My next purchase…as soon as I can find it in stock! Looking for the same exact set up in 6.5 PRC.
Might have to go back to the gun shop and buy it next week
I was able to aquire one of these and ammunition in 6.5PRC holy **** does it shoot! I have been looking for a rifle like this for years!
@@richardbriscoe8563 It's a Triggertech trigger, which is a separate company... Same with the chassis and barrel manufacturer
I played with one today and oh man, i am seriously on the hunt for a PRC, i echo your review to a T!!!
BF fills the niche of practical hunting performance that is informative and interesting to watch. This is rarely said but, "quit your day job".
Another great review. Very analytical with your customary enthusiasm. When can we in the UK get our hands on one?
Awesome review, thank you.
what scope are you running?
I’d like to see one in 7mm rem hopefully they do the same as they did with the lupo and expand the ammunition selection
My name is Walter and I must say, that I can't wait to get my hands on the 2020 waypoint, caliber 308. That's all that I have, Semper Fi.
Good review, im considering purchasing one of these rifles.
would love to see a review on the seekins havak element
I think that gun that you showed the picture of looked nice somebody finally colored outside the lines and made something nice
Thanks for the review, was really great. Can you post here the ammunition you shot and its group size?
Yes, 7 SAUM! Best all around short action hunting cartridge there is in my opinion. And I've never even shot one! As soon as I saw this rifle announced, I knew it was a winner if well executed but none of the chamberings interest me except possibly the PRC.
That’s so true , Christensen rifle are super expensive
And depending on where you’re looking, these days they’ve jump the price by $200 more
You know the guy loves guns when his son name is Ruger ;) love you’ll the videos best regards from sad New York :)
Looks like a sweet rifle ! Like you said, needs more variety in chamberings !
Since a year has now gone by, have you heard any rumors lately about this rifle being offered in any other chamberings, like maybe 300 win mag or 300 PRC? Great video, great review. Thanks.
rumor has is the 7mm prc is coming in 2023 aka same overall action length ofd 300 wm so could be seeing it soon.
Such a cool looking gun! Wish I would have found it before I bought my newest x bolt in 6.5 PRC
Haha I subscribed the other day HOPING for this review and here it is!
I agree on the lack of chamberings... So sad to see it not available in 30-06 or 270.
Would love to see a review or a comparison of this with the Seekins Precision Havak PH2
I would really like to see a comparison between the Waypoint, Premier Divide and Elevation MTR. This would really help me in making a decision between the three.
I want one!……. As soon as it is available in .300 winmag, 28 nosler or .280 AI would be a fantasy 👍🏻
Your opinion will be greatly appreciated thank you
What about reviewing the CA MPR, in comparison to the Waypoint, since you feel the Ridgeline is out dated?
I have two you could test/review.
Looked at this a year ago, but now I really likey and gonna get one. Good info.
You might want to watch the video I just posted about the Fierce Rogue. It's a competitor to the Waypoint that was just released today.
The example that I had was boringly accurate. I hit out to 1050 yards with it.
Crazy this gun now sells for around 2500
Yes they NEED to offer this in a 7 SAUM! But they need to make sure the action is long enough to run the heavy 7mm bullets! So it may be a better option to offer it in a long action in 7 SAUM
Agreed
For that money I'd get into a Seekins Havak. Mine has been an amazing shooter.
Does the carbon barrel work well at the range or do the groups spread quick with some barrel heat?
Just noticed these are out in 300 Win Mag and 7mm Rem Mag! So nice they aren’t just in the dweeby 6.5cm and 308win anymore.
$2670 MSRP for carbon adjustable, still worth it today? Or do you have a different rifle you like more for the price? Thanks! Love the channel
Looks like literally the entire internet is sold out of these. Hopefully Springfield can ship more out soon.
My Tikka T3 shoots 1/2 inch groups all day long with Black Hills 6.5 143 ELD-x ammo. Paid $800.00 and slapped very nice glass on her and BANG!
Thanks-
came here for that comment
Great gun no doubt, it's Achilles heel is cartridge selection.
The available cartridges are lacking. As an owner of a Christiansen I don’t blame you. I buy a rifle for a particular cartridge not the other way around. 6.5 PRC ok. Shooters are particularly loyal to their cartridges of choice.
I don't even hunt and this was pretty interesting to watch.
Is there any difference between the two barrel options besides looks and heat dissipation
A wise man once said it is better to buy the rifle with everything you want at once. Otherwise, you are chasing parts and spending more than you have to spend. So, yeah, 1800 to 2k might sting, but you pay once and have what you want.
For anything we buy; It's not about the cost, it's about the VALUE we get for each dollar.
Springfield is famous for their rifles
Great feedback. Will the waypoint carbon drop in a KRG chassis stock?
How does it compare to the Bergara HMR Pro? Prices seem pretty close, and the Bergara has an adjustable stock.
