This bass has incredible tone for the price of the Yamaha bass. It sounds really clean and pristine, I'm amazed at the sound of the bass.
I received one for Christmas and I run it through an Ampeg BA210 and it sounds like a dream. It hasn't even been modded yet and it has a wonderful, heavy sound.
Like a cross between a Fender Precision, Fender Jazz, and a StingRay. Highly recommended for those who love a classic/ punchy bass sound.
Funny because I don't know much about basses being a beginner but I always love punchy tone you can get from a PJ, jaguar, thunderbird or stingray I really find this one appealing indeed :-)
That's why i like it, it's versatile!
I was actually thinking of getting this for my starting bass.
@@fruitjof I havent regretted getting it one bit. Put some heavy roundwounds (or flats, even) and you'll love the smooth but chunky sound of it.
I have the same setup and I love it too!
This video was extremely helpful when I picked out my first TRBX 174 EW bass back in 2019! Thank you so much! Also ouuff love the way you play! ❤🔥
Just bought one of these as my first bass love it so far
Yuh I'm bouta do the same most likely
Domz vibez do it man I put some chrome flats on it about a week later and she fits in any mix now super easy to eq out the buzz for recording
@@lilkris3008 thanks man I'm for sure getting it
I've had mine for about a year. Just put some power slinky string on it and it sounds alright with the stock p/j pickups. The strings are so beefy that they broke the nut though.
Super sounding bass. Gotta love that tone.
Wonderful demonstration. Thank you so much!
Your demo is the best one I came across so far. I already ordered mine, now I wait for it to arrive. I purchased the red one. It will be my workhorse bass for external performances and home studio recordings via Radial J48 DI Box. It sounds phenomenal, and better than a lot of the expensive basses. The Yamaha tone is sweet on my ears. I assume it will be awesome, if not stellar, in both live and the home studio. Thanks.
hi, i have bought one because of your video, it really helped in my decision making. TY
YAMAHA TRBX 174 + EMG PJ SET = PERFECT!!!!!!!!!! GREAT SOUND!!!
Best demo of this bass... thanks a lot
I love mine straight out the box. Best cheap option for a solid gigging bass
I just got a sunburst version of this bass with a fender rumble 15 for 160$ from the pawn shop..the bass is brand new there's not even dust on the bridge and the strings still sound brand new I'm excited to mod the heck out of it
Gotoh bridge has standard Fenderish mounting holes, no extra woodwork is required. Gotoh 201 and 201B-4 is the same thing. Amazing cost/value ratio.
fretlesik
How can I help you?
I think the original bridge is bpvery solid, really this bass needs no mods at all,it sounds and feels perfect out of the box.
hello. i know this is post is 4 years ago. I bought the same bass and planning to mod the bridge does the Gotoh 201B-4-CK Bass Bridge perfect mod for this bass? thank you
well done and thank you. I bought one to lay down some bass tracks on a few recordings. Quite a sleeper for the price, and the finish is beautiful. Will outplay any Squier , Ibanez bass at the price point and much more overall quality. It will always come down to preference, but if you're going to drop $200 - $250, don't waste a dime on anything else.
great review thank you!
I got one, the sounds are beautiful, especially treble sounding ❤ 💋
Sounds beautiful wot you doing and sound 💯😉👌
I own one and love it!
Sweet. I just bought one of these 174s and am curious what it would sound like with the Gotoh and Dunlops but without the Aguilar and Focusrite - and with flats (say, La Bella Low Tension Flats) instead of nickel wounds. And are you playing with the stock pups and potentiometers? Thanks.
How is this compare to the Fender Squier Contemporary Jazz Bass and Cort 54 JJ?
That is some great playing. I recognized the one jazz diddy that you played up on the neck. What tune is that? Thx man great vid.
Amazing sound! Thanks for posting the video - it's very helpful. I have a TRBX304 and was thinking of upgrading the bridge. Did you have any issues with setting up the action low with the new bridge? It looks like the saddles of 201B are 10mm, whereas the stock ones are 8mm, so I saw some people had to shim the neck or use dremel to work around. Is the sound from this video from EMG pickups? What do you think about the stock pickups? Are they decent or better to be replaced? Thanks!
Shinhyuk ParK : I was wondering if you would know what I would have to do on a bass I have? I am unable to get the string height low enough with the bridge adjustments what would you recommend?
Thank you bro
im looking for an machine head tuning keys, what do u suggest?
Can anyone recommend me a place where i can get a string retainer for this bass
I accidentally just bought one of these. I was browsing Prime and there was an advert rotating in the side bar. I must have clicked something because the following morning I got a receipt. I was about to send it back when I found your film here. Now I'll keep it...
thanks brah i was gonna buy this but wanted to check out how good it may or may not be. someone sent me a link to this video :)
hey man my top string has alot of fret buzz at the lower end....how come yours doesn't smh....is there a adjustment
saddle/truss rod adjustment? keep an eye out for neck relief, high frets, etc.?
Wow man great playing. Was checking out your fretless version of this axe.Who's your luthier? I would dig a fretless like that
Why a fretless?
Local guy, here in Poland, but any capable luthier can do that.
That was my main goal - get a cheap but decent fretless. I ended up putting a set of EMGs in it, and replacing all the hardware with Gotoh. You can check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/j33claLfXJk/v-deo.html
Am hesitating between this TRBX 174EW and the Ibanez GSR200B,
Can anyone advise please?
I just bought the TRBX174EW. I haven't played in years and started looking into all of the budget basses. I researched for almost 2 months and then went to a local store to try several out. The Yamaha was, by far, the best of the group.
Great video! Was adding the Gotoh bridge a worthwhile upgrade for this bass?
Oh, one more question-are the mounting holes the same as the Yamaha bridge? I've read elsewhere that the Gotoh bridge is a good upgrade. Also, what about the tuning keys? Have you looked at those? All these upgrade options sound great, but one might only want to go so far with an instrument at this price point. Let me know what you think, and Thank you!
I bought this instrument as a modding platform. Bridge was the first thing I've swapped. I'm replacing fretboard with ebony fretless one, and I need bridge which will give me more sustain. The tuning keys are fine, but I prefer higher gear ratio, so I've already changed them for Gotoh GB707. Even without mods this is a fine instrument. Next video of fretless version will be out next week.
What's the first song being played? It sounds very nice and I'd love to learn that...!
Thanks! The very first song (the one you can hear along photo closeups) is called "Shibuya" and you can hear the whole thing here: ua-cam.com/video/vKkGhqRo_Qw/v-deo.html
The first song (or main phrase) of the actual sound test is called "Olive" - song from my debut solo EP "BASSQUARTER" and you can listen to it on Spotify or you can get it from CD Baby.

fretlesik which is the best bass guitar yamaha trbx174 or rbx174
Neither is the best. TRBX174 is significantly improved over old RBX174, so I would choose TRBX.
I ordered one of these but had to send it back bc they sent me a USED one when I had ordered NEW and I actually ended up instead getting a Squier... But after a couple months with the Squier I think I want to get one of these Yamaha again. The neck was more of a narrow jazz neck while the Squier I have now is an EXTREMELY wide precision neck. Too thick for my play style for sure. You make this Yamaha sound fantastic.
They did the same thing with me. I ordered a new one and they sent me a used one. Sent it back tho.
Hi please let me know Dunlop Super Bright strings are 40-100 or 45-105 ??
Super Bright Nickel Wound Strings 40-100
What's the difference between the TRBX174EW and the standard TRBX174 besides appreciate. Does the difference in wood cause a difference in the sound? Is the wood actually even different?
I have the EW and have played the regular one at GC and I couldn’t tell much of a difference besides amp. Both are passive so most of the tones coming from amp and technique
@@lilkris3008 thanks!
im sold
i have same bass does sound as good as that....what are you running it through ?
Here it's just Aguilar Tone Hammer DI (no eq, I've just added some gain) straight to Focustrite.
Is there a sound diff in this bass and the Rbx 170? Do they have the same pickups?
I've had both and I think they are the same. Among budget basses, these are one of the best PJ pickup sets around. Good clarity and punch - a real bargain. I think the TRBX body and headstock styling was changed from the RBX. I like the change personally. Hope this helps.
@@bobt5778 great info! Thanks buddy!
£200 Bass sounds like a £2000 in Your hands! Yamaha rulez...
This bass is really good.Solid construction, solid tone.Inexpensive.A no beainer.
how can it look like a £2000 bass?
holy fuck is the thing active or passive
EW meant the wood colour ?
Please enlighten
EW = exotic wood which is used on top of the body I believe
The colour of this one is NT (natural). The full name of that bass is Yamaha TRBX174EW NT
Can't believe I paid under 200 for this guitar. I love the bb line, but this thing is amazing man. Try it with stainless strings.....
this sound better than a trbx 304? Thanks! ( i am a future beginner new player : ) )
It's a different beast. For around half the price of TRBX 304 it's worth considering.
Thanks!
What does each knob control?
Volume-volume-tone. Jazz bass kind of controlls.
How you got rid of the 60 Cycle Hum ?? I don't hear even The J pickup
alone.
This particular J pickup has hum-canceling design (two poles per string wired in a right way). The split P is always hum-canceling.
sold..I want
Fuck, I must get one😲.....👍
What does EW stand for?
exotic wood
Esse baixo é ativo ou passivo?
Passivo. Saudações!
I wish I could get rid of my Learning Disability so I could learn how to play Bass.
Try getting a game called rocksmith, availible on steam or console, ps3/xbox 360, not sure if its on newer gen consoles, you get a usb to aux cable. It's like guitar hero but you use a real guitar/bass and as you get better more notes get added until you fully learn the song.
@@ironbeard2453 Thank you for your reply, I will take a closer look at that, I hope you have a great day.
Miguel Santos keep practicing everyday
You don’t learn m,you feel it bro 💪
@@tonyhades90 Thank you Antonio.
Celson Portiolli toca bem
what is the weight??
light probably compared to precision basses
pickups are kinda weak. the wood is decent so its a great bass to pimp out. I was going to buy one but the electronics cavity is too small for a battery and preamp
I've replaced stock pickups with EMG set and I managed to fit 9V battery without any drilling. You can still add a pream like BTC Control.
@@fretlesik I NEED A SEE YOUR BASS GUITAR!
WITH EMG PICKUPS
Forget cheap Fender clones!
The screen is tiny
i meant to say,,,,,it doesnt sound as good as that.....can i get lessons off you?? do you have a channel??
Hey! Just click here ua-cam.com/users/fretlesikvideos or go to my website for more content: fretlesik.pl
My bass doesn’t sound like that
Get a compressor or an eq.
why put 1000 bucks for a bass that same the same ?
The Mids are Horror.
The middle pickup not impressive. Mud brick.
