I think the problem with winter isn‘t actually the winter itself but the dark. We tend to work 9 to five jobs so we leave the house when it is dark and return when it is dark. After a day of working we feel like the day just slipped through our hands, and on top of it all it is cold. And it can end up feeling like we just live a monotone routine that consists of our duties but no time of enjoying life.
THIS. I can handle the cold. I cannot handle the darkness. Right now I'm working from home. But when I was out in the world, I'd get up in the dark and come home in the dark. I'd go outside at lunch for as long as I could physically stand it. But even that was, at the very most, an hour. Less than that if I wanted to actually eat and it was too cold to eat outside.
Yes! You are right! I always loved winter, and could not understand how the adults in my life could not, until I started working. The first winter with a 8-5 was quite difficult, but this year I tried to fall in love with the darkness: I think it worked, and next year (for now winter is almost over) I'm sure I will enjoy it to the fullest once again as I did as a child c:
As a person in a 9-5 job with no flexibility it’s hard to get any daylight in all those months, I guess this is the main reason why this time is so rough for me
This might sound weird, but one thing I like about winter (as a Canadian) is that there's something about it that makes everything feel more wilderness-like, I guess in part it's the harshness and solitude, but it's something I can't really explain. When you go hiking in the winter everything's more quiet and hushed. You'll rarely see other people and when it snows or fog comes in it feels like everything is closer, and you're in your own place far away from civilization (even if you're not). In summer sometimes it feel like the world goes on forever with how big and blue the sky is and how bright the sun can be and all the sprawling green fields (which can be nice too). But, in the winter the clouds are low and grey, the pine trees all cluster together to shelter you from the world, and when the sun does come out it's gold and mellow like a gentle hello.
@@kaylynkennedy7070 my husband is from Ontario, Lynn which is near Brockville. I always assume people are from everywhere in Ontario but Toronto because I never meet anyone from Toronto only hear about them lolol
I think winter can be hard to appreciate because in a lot of ways it just feels like a waiting period for the warmer months, but actually the waiting can be beautiful too
Absolutely. It's about waiting for summer (as for me, I'm already tired of winter). But in fact, when it is winter we often wait for summer and vice versa. Unfortunately, our life is about expectation of something we don't have at the moment.
Here in the middle east, we don't really have any effects of spring or autumn... The weather is extremely hot all year long except for winter. So for me.. it's harder to appreciate summer🤍
I just wanted to say thank you, becouse the vibe of your videos is unlike anyone elses', and it truly always gives me a sense of calm and brings a little peacefulness in my otherwise hectic life. They also have a rare quality of being intellectual without sounding pretentious. You seem like such a genuine and kind person, it's a treat to get to see the world through your eyes.
As for apples, in Poland we have an early kind that is light yellow and ready to pick in July-August, called 'papierówka', and other than that... Golden Delicious :D
What I love about the late winter months such as February and March is that feeling of hope it gives me. It's not spring yet, but I know, spring is coming. It's not here yet, but we can already allow ourselves to dream of warmer days. There are no green leaves yet, but there are tiny buds on the trees if you take the time to look closely. It's this feeling of "not yet, but soon" that truly excites me about this time - knowing that the best is yet to come. 🌿🌷🌼
It's really interesting how people from different parts of the world view each season. Because of where I'm from, I've always loved winter over summer because the temperature gets lower and is much more comfortable for me. I did a year abroad in Durham, and lived through the "cold and dark months" I had only read about in books. To me, that was a period of excitement because I woke up to snow outside of the window for the first time in my life, saw frost when I went on walks and felt the festive mood of Christmas. But most importantly, I have also learnt to appreciate the beauty of summer more hearing the reasons why people prefer warmer months. At the end of the day, each moment has its own beauty for us to cherish and appreciate I guess.
I really relate with what you are saying. I'm from Portugal with relatively mild winters, and certainly no snow unless you are higher up. So when I moved to central Europe winter became one of my favourite times of the year, because the snow is very special to me. The warmer Portuguese winter now feels like a sham.
Winter is like waiting room for big trees to start blooming, it's beautiful to see flowering just after the end of frost days. It's a fascinating transition between months of long moonlight nights and long sunrise days.✨️
I love how reflective your voice-over is. The way you pause, take your time to put what you're thinking into words, question whether what you said made sense. This is an emotional video, and we can really feel your presence in it❤
Winter is my favourite season! It's the season of rest, cosiness, hibernation, renewal. Storing up our energy for the spring, just like the seeds in the ground. Also I am one of those rare people who just love snow. It's pure magic to me.
I love winter. The time to rest, be cosy, read, reflect and of course, snow, frost, bareness and sleepiness of it all and the sky - oh the sky colours that only ever can be witnessed in winter. There is so much beauty in winter and the dark nights with the silver moon. I can not bare the long light days of summer, which are never ending and unbearable if there’s heat in the mix. This culture of ‘waiting’ for Friday, weekend, sunshine, end of winter is one sure way to let the life pass you by
I love winter for being a liminal time, kind of like a held-in breath; connecting the memories and preparation of autumn to the potentials of spring. Allowing ourselves to appreciate winter as a period of rest is healthy, especially for creative people. To stop looking back, or thinking forward, and just focus ourselves on the Now. I think that's why I like the cold so much, too - it can force you to be present in your body and surroundings, and that can open doors you might not have realized were even shut. 💙
I realize moments like this during Christmas evening, in Germany, we celebrate this in the evening. If we are lucky we have some snow outside. It is often already dark outside though I feel the calmest during this time. It is like "Oh yeah it is rightful for me to be on a slow mode". It is a comfortable feeling for me to sit in a warm sweatshirt or blanket, and eat food that is warm. But I personally prefer being in the mountains with snow and a lot of Fogg. Often at my place it just gets rainy and really cold so this is not so comfortable.
Great video. I used to hate winter until I bought a very warm coat and started taking daily walks outside. I came to really appreciate winter’s quiet beauty.
I love winter, I live in the Lake District and you get to fully embrace a slower pace lifestyle. We’ve just started to see snowdrops and the first signs that the daffodils are on their way.

October is my fave month but I admit I do like many aspects of winter. I prefer darker colours, crisp air, more stark beauty. So autumn and winter delight me. I am trying to really enjoy spring and summer more now, too.
I think also people in January are usually skint lol 😅 so it's hard for people. I found it really hard this year, but i am becoming more fond of winter the more i watch your videos 😊 xx
I have always loved winter. Maybe because I was born February 1st! It is so invigorating to walk in the crisp clean air. I feel more alive and energetic. And you are so right about finding beauty in nature during winter. I also love the coziness of winter. Big bulky sweaters and scarves. We have a woodstove so coming in from the cold to a wood fire is so welcoming.
When I lived in Seattle I lived in the top of a mountain. Winters were brutal so much snow we couldn't leave the house plus the rain it will make the road very icy. What I disliked is not have the freedom to get out of the house and also I missed the sun. The winter outfits I used to wear were heavy for me, being from the tropics I had no idea how to layer up. Now I live in warm weather and I love it I feel I have more freedom to be outdoors. Near cactuses and canyons, I'm very blessed.
It's nice to see someone finding things to appreciate about this time of year. January is definitely my least favourite month. I saw it described somewhere as "a month of Mondays", which is kind of how I feel about it haha
It's easy for love winter like that. You haven't snow. However if you live in Siberia, there are a lot of snow and -25 degree of Celsius for 6 month, it's really difficult for love this.

I do love Autumn/Winter, cosy months I call them, light the fire 🔥 snuggle on the sofa with a book or TV. It’s more peaceful for me as the Summer gets very busy here in Devon with holiday makers when I find it a bit too much for me being and introvert. My favourite apples are Pink Ladies x

Maybe the problem is what you mentioned, that we feel the need to slow down but our daily jobs/responsabilties doesn't allow us to do so. This can be very frustrating. This year I'm trying to be more concious of nature around me and I start walking to school instead of cycling. I loved the change, now I have really seen the very precise moment the first flowers had started to rise and I felt in my shoulders the weight of the first snow of the year. It has also given me a space during the day to be away from stimulations. Just me, the world and my thoughts ❄💙
Loved this video, Ruby, thank you so much! You have motivated me to notice the beauties of winter more and not sit tucked inside all day, every day, mourning the loss of the sun's warmth and brightness. Best wishes to you for a beautiful 2023!
Hi ruby ❤ it’s summer here in Australia right now and I miss the coziness that comes with winter, this was such a peaceful video it really calmed me down from a panic attack so thank you.
Living in a place where the Winter is really harsh (New Hampshire, US), I have a hard time enjoying it...I am a cold person generally, so I am always cold in Winter. Ice makes it difficult to like walking. I am not a winter sports person either after knee surgeries. I am trying to appreciate winter more though. This is a good reminder. :)
Beautiful shots 🥰 I also love winter. January is probably one of my favourite months; the quiet, beautiful month after all busy social activities in December, and because of the new year I always feel I have new energy.
I love winter even when I can't go outside so much because of the cold. It's so relaxing watching all these beautiful winter pictures from the inside 😊
I love February because there's so much more daylight time. All through January and February you can see the sun setting later and later, great sign that warmth is coming soon
My absolute favorite apple is a Jazz apple. It’s the perfect mix or crunch and sweetness yet there is a brightness to it too. I also preferred eating them cold so I like to put my in the fridge the night before.
So kind and original of you Ruby, to allow us to jump in on you! Really delightful before I pick up my diary. It is a cold winter' s day closing in San Francisco.
Thank you for this beautiful, calm video that helped me getting more at peace with myself. Studies and human interactions have been pretty frustrating today and this video reminded my of actual things to hold on to: frost, long walks, tea, porridge and banana bread. I might start my day earlier tomorrow just to treat me with a little walk! Congrats on starting studying Latin! The first weeks/months can be difficult but there is one point when everything just clicks and it is so rewarding.
I love winter as well. As i get older I have slowed down and look around more. The little things and details of nature really amaze me. I wish sometime I can go back and appreciate all the details of the world that passed so fast. My favourite apples are the Northern Spy apples and they originated in the USA but they grow them on Prince Edward Island as well. They are delicious especially in apple pies. Which are also my favourite. Thank you for making a lovely vlog and giving so much inspiration to everyone. You are magical! :)
The goodness of an apple, I think, depends a lot on when it’s picked, how ripe it is. I understood that Europe has different apples than the USA but I know all the ones you mentioned. I can usually depend on Golden Delicious tasting good. Once I bought one of each apple variety at the grocery to determine the best- at that time. Opal was one of the best ones. I often take the weather/earth for granted, less so now I live in the country. But I ALWAYS appreciate it on holiday in Hawaii. The air, it’s fragrance & humidity wafting at you in gentle warm breezes amongst lush tropical flora is absolutely lovely. (I hope you go someday (and make a travelogue ☺️). Cheers.
🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎 I love Braeburn apples, I used to love Granny Smith but they're a bit too sour for me now and just recently I started to love Golden Delicious which I used to hate (because someone would always bring me those instead of Granny Smith :D). And then I love when in the autumn I can taste apples that fall from the gardens I walk by, so there's always a surprise. No idea what those are. I just prefer a nice and crunchy sweet apple :)
You have got it sooo right about the cold. There was an evening quite early in January where I was meeting a friend for dinner at a pub, and I was like 15 mins early. There was a towpath nearby and I just walked down it for a bit to explore, with this cold wind battering me in the face with icy droplets of rain. I felt so in aware of my own existence and of the world around me in that 15 minutes. It gave me a real hankering to be up a mountain, or on a long, cold walk. I'm definitely trying to give myself slack this winter. I have been engaging in cosy hobbies, like knitting and birdwatching (while bundled up of course.) Going to bed early is another great help. We are such seasonal creatures historically and it is a crime that capitalism has pushed us into being always on (despite what boons it has granted us.) I think the only possible pushback is the active choice to live slowly and appreciate. Appreciate the cold, and how it makes the warmth more delicious. Living slowly is an active protest, imo.
My favorite apple is the Granny Smith especially when it is hard because I like the sour taste of them. Thank you for this video! I love watching them (even during school haha). Thank you, Ruby! Keep up the hard work and amazing videos! :)
I love autumn and winter, I think I feel most myself in those months, if that makes sense. If I say that to some people they look at me as though I'm the strangest person, it used to bother me when I was younger but I don't really care so much anymore, I like what I like. I don't mind spring but I find the summer bright and hot and everyone wants to cram as much as possible into the long days, I find it very overwhelming
Thank you for sharing your perspektive. I usually love winter till the end of january. My birthday is on the 23rd and it is one of the highlights of the month and winter, but afterwards I tend to fall in a hole, because the cold and darkness just gets to much. I felt better this week though, because I saw the first snowdrops on my way home. I would also like to tell you that my cat enjoyed the video as well. I was watching it in the morning, with my cat in the bed. I always show him what video I am watching, so he knows where the sound comes from and what I am doing. He normally doesn't give my phone more than a quick look. This time though, when I placed my phone on the mattress, he stretched out his paw and dragged it across the sheets, so it was in front of him. Then he watched the entire video with me. I think he especially enjoyed the beautiful landscapes. He fell asleep afterwards.
yesterday i was thinking about calm beauty of the winter on my evening walk, and then i saw this video. thank you ruby, your beautiful words just warmed my heart❣️ sending love xx
I agree with you currently about Gala apples and not liking Pink Lady. But many years ago I had a house with an ancient unidentified Orange Pippin and they were out of this world. I took a cutting when we moved but I never succeeded in growing it. And have never found it since.
The colours and scenes in this video are so lovely! I think I would prefer Winter in the UK, where I would not have to wait months between glimpses of grass (oh, how I pine for the sight of grass in the Winter!) and could see wonderful textures and colours underneath the frost. However, there are times when I do find even our snow-covered Canadian winters charming; I feel happy when bright sunshine glints off icicles, on overcast days with wet snow pillowing everything, as the quiet makes everything feel immediate and infinite at the same time, getting cozy after chores in front of the fire, and feeling tied to the long tradition of a ‘slower’ life during the Winter months (even if my modern responsibilities often encroach on this). I suppose even the parts of Winter that I do not find pleasant can often be looked back on as challenges overcome. Thanks for reminding me to reflect on and appreciate a season I sometimes try my best to ignore
My favourite apples are Braeburn. They're delicious. I like winter but also spring are, my favourites but I think there is something magical about each season.
Yes! I really like winter too. I like being cold because that's what winter is all about! I strongly dislike artificial heating, and feel that winter is really spoiled by people turning on central heating. Snuggly hats, scarves, gloves, and blankets are all part of the joy of winter!
Hey Ruby, loved this video ❤️ I was wondering if you'd like to talk a bit more in depth about how you journal. I've been trying to journal as well since last year's autumn but still struggling with what to write sometimes. I think a video like that would be very interesting. Also, it is because of you that I've been able to enjoy each season more than I did before. This year might be the first time I truly enjoyed winter as it is my least favorite season, so thank you for always inspiring us with your gratitude :3
I think the reason why some people think January is slower is because it is right after December which is one of the most busiest months of the year and it goes by so quickly, but then January comes and you maybe don't have as much fun things to do as in December which makes it feel slower.
Question.... I realise you journal and note and commonplace note making.... but how do you make to come up with the 'genius'... the breakthroughs that every artist/writer dreams of.... when do these gems come to you? can you plan for them? do they come to you on a walk... do you ever wake up with one? or how? (the poetic line... or concept.. or suchthing)
Hello Ruby! I'd like to thank you for this video I'm one of the first watching. It's all about inspiration and peace and no stress. It made me a little calmer by the end of the busy day)
I have two favorite apples...Granny Smith and York Imperial :) I can only get York Imperial from our local apple orchards back home....it isn't sold in the stores.
Ruby I love your channel so much. I live on the coast of Australia and am so far away from a cosy wintry place, I need to do holidays in the Australian tablelands where I might get lucky enough to have some snow.

You might try turning on all the lights in the house, that helps me a bit.

Thank u ruby this video gave me the push that i need to come out of my rut/ depressive phase
Im struggling but i guess im gonna be fine ❤
Maybe the problem is what you mentioned, that we feel the need to slow down but our daily jobs/responsabilties doesn't allow us to do so. This can be very frustrating. This year I'm trying to be more concious of nature around me and I start walking to school instead of cycling. I loved the change, now I have really seen the very precise moment the first flowers had started to rise and I felt in my shoulders the weight of the first snow of the year. It has also given me a space during the day to be away from stimulations. Just me, the world and my thoughts ❄💙
Yeah Ruby doesn’t seem to realise that most people have jobs and responsibilities which take up most of the daylight.
Loved this video, Ruby, thank you so much! You have motivated me to notice the beauties of winter more and not sit tucked inside all day, every day, mourning the loss of the sun's warmth and brightness. Best wishes to you for a beautiful 2023!
I love this video! Since I started appreciating winter more, now it's way more meaningful to me to observe the little magic in every winter day❄️
Hi ruby ❤ it’s summer here in Australia right now and I miss the coziness that comes with winter, this was such a peaceful video it really calmed me down from a panic attack so thank you.
I hope you're okay now ❤
@@s.g2344 I’m okay thank you ☺️
Your videos are so peaceful.🥰🕊️
Living in a place where the Winter is really harsh (New Hampshire, US), I have a hard time enjoying it...I am a cold person generally, so I am always cold in Winter. Ice makes it difficult to like walking. I am not a winter sports person either after knee surgeries. I am trying to appreciate winter more though. This is a good reminder. :)
Winter is golden🤩 love this season, its the best
Beautiful shots 🥰 I also love winter. January is probably one of my favourite months; the quiet, beautiful month after all busy social activities in December, and because of the new year I always feel I have new energy.
Congrats!

Congrats!

Beautiful place where you live. Thanks for sharing those lovely moments.
i love your chickens ruby. 1 of my friends that i went to school with has chickens also. i am glad your doing well ❤
Thank you for this beautiful, calm video that helped me getting more at peace with myself.
Winter and Fall is my fav seasons because snowy and warm foods/drinks not too hot for weather!!!
Congrats!

I can understand what you’re saying. I can actually say that my favorite season is winter, always has always will.
I adore Mary Oliver ❤
Soft and ethereal beauty framed by the strong and rustic always enchants me.
“There’s beauty in that newness” 💌
Cheers.
Your videos are a blessing in this dark world. Thank you.
The beauty of your videos and your spirit are most therapeutic, Ruby. Thank you 🤎🤎
🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏🍎 I love Braeburn apples, I used to love Granny Smith but they're a bit too sour for me now and just recently I started to love Golden Delicious which I used to hate (because someone would always bring me those instead of Granny Smith :D). And then I love when in the autumn I can taste apples that fall from the gardens I walk by, so there's always a surprise. No idea what those are. I just prefer a nice and crunchy sweet apple :)
I needed the calm of your video today. Its not good at the moment but taking a small restbite helps me to relax. Thank you.
And since it's still winter I would love to see a book recommendation video which includes all you favorite wintery books 🤍
Congrats!

Congrats!

winter gets so much hate but i love it so much!
Congrats!

Pink Lady is my favourite, followed by Granny Smiths
I agree with you currently about Gala apples and not liking Pink Lady. But many years ago I had a house with an ancient unidentified Orange Pippin and they were out of this world. I took a cutting when we moved but I never succeeded in growing it. And have never found it since.
Your winter looks beautiful, my winter (and not only mine) is dirt, slippery roads and pavements and snow which nobody bothers to remove.
Congrats!

I always look forward to you videos because I love your perspective on things. Hope you are having a wonderful winter.

I definitely can! I’ll have to film a video 🥰
Pink ladies are my fav …. I’m currently obsessed 😂🙌🏻 although I also love a Granny Smith with peanut butter mmm

Ruby I love your channel so much. I live on the coast of Australia and am so far away from a cosy wintry place, I need to do holidays in the Australian tablelands where I might get lucky enough to have some snow.
personally my favorite is Fuji apples
Elstar is my favourite sort of apples
