Fun fact: The actor who played the bully went on an anti-bullying campaign where he would speak at schools and show his clips from the movie. He went to my middle school a few months after release. I still got bullied though.

Dodgeball is one of my faves but bc of Ben Stiller. hes one of the best comedy actors from that time imo and kills every scene in that movie.
and someone else said it but yeah we dont fuck w Justin Long anymore he was having like parties where young girls were drinking (or smth of that nature)

As a Mormon who is 25 and went to college in rural Idaho, this movie is such a landmark cultural piece for members of the church, it is quoted often and has been watched at many sleepovers.
And for the record that is 100% actually what Preston Idaho is still like, it feels like a portal to the past. everyone there is old, and it just doesn’t feel like a real place. They really captured the energy there it’s hilarious

Even though this is an indie film, it never felt like some hidden gem that "if you knew it, I knew you had good taste." I was in middle school when this came out and it was like an instant hit with teens at that time. I remember Hot Topic would sell Napoleon merch.
I also cringed at the assumption that Rex Kwon Do's wife was trans. She's not. Its a cisgendered woman who is a bodybuilder.

    Two things:
    1. As a black man, I think the Lafawduh/Kip dynamic aged great. Obviously I don't speak for all black people, but it is comfortably offensive and hilarious. Kip doesn't say the n-word and Lafawnduh isn't overly sexualized nor made to seem ghetto. She's cool and out of Kip's league which is the joke. The fact that they can love each other while being so culturally different is both funny and endearing. While slightly offensive, it doesn't make me uncomfortable.
    2. The bully wanting tots or chips is hilarious because Idaho is potato land. The license plate literally says "Famous Potatoes". That's a very minor, but funny detail.

45:08 this was soo funny to me because the ladies who do that dance, one of them is my aunt and the rest of them are her friends. They really were just people who live in Preston, Idaho and happened to be friends of a friend of someone working on the film.

I think the humor in Lafawnduh and Kip's dynamic is less that she's "making him act black", and more that Kip is kind of a tryhard/poser who is awkwardly trying to fit in with his new Girlfriend based on his own stereotypes and assumptions. Her buying him a chain is honestly kinda sweet, doesn't strike me as too mean or racist, maybe a little cheeky at most. But then again I think what makes it funny is less anything specifically about Lafawnduh's race and more that Kip is so incredibly white and nerdy on his own.
    What do y'all think?

As someone from Idaho, this movie holds a special place in my life. EVERYONE watched and cherished it and it was a big deal that it was filmed here. Preston, Idaho is only “touristy” for this movie - and that city really stinks

First time i watched this movie was while i was in the hospital in 2022. I was dealing with pancreatitis and alcohol withdrawals and hopped up on morphine. The reason why this movie hold a place in my heart is because it was the first time in a long time that i genuinely laughed. And maybe it was the morphine, maybe it was the movie, but the entire thing was so strange that even through hallucinations, pain etc, i still sat through the entire thing giggling away.

Hey Hivemind and Ro, love ur content and this is my favorite movie ever but it does feel a little weird to assume that Carmen Brady (who plays Starla) is a trans woman. I think that trans rights & representation are incredibly important but I looked into whether or not Brady is trans and there is no evidence to suggest that (she’s also a huge MAGA trumper so she’s probably not). She totally could be a transgender woman but it’s really her business and it just felt a bit strange to see yall assume that based on her physique. Either way tho still a great video, yall really tapped into what makes the movie so special
