HOW do you Colourize a Black and White Video? To put it another way, how to I add colour to a B/W Video. I used Vegas Pro 18's AI Default Colourizing, it wasn't very good. I then tried Vegas Pro 19 which has Enhance AI Colourizing. That was even worse. I have two examples on my Channel.
@Jamienomore they used to have to go through by hand and colorize those sorts of things. I'm given to understand recently AI has gotten quite good at tasks like this, but I'm not sure which product provides the best result
@@NathanCarterVids I Downloaded the Trial version of Vegas Pro 21. It has the exact same faults in Colourizing as Pro 18 and 19. I know how to fix that and e-mailed the CEO of Magix. It appears the don't care about the second rate software they give their Customers.
Is there an easy way to add thunder and lightning? I don't mean lightning bolts but flashes where a lighthouse gets really bright as though you are shooting in a storm? I do Scuba videos and some of my subjects are shipwrecks. I'd like to b-roll a lighthouse during a storm. Of course, I'd like to film it on a sunny afternoon and just darken everything until 'lightning happens'. Adding sound should be easy enough.
I have old black and white (interlaced even) video that I am trying to make look as good as possible. While I'm not sure the points you went over will apply to this project, I like the methodology and variety. It will be great if I need to do a future B&W from color project. Thanks!
Great tutorial. At the moment I’m grading a flat scan of a16mm original black-and-white film from 1966 and I’m wondering do I go about it the same way? Is there a BW LUT in Davinci resolve? Do I set it up and colour management?
Hmmmm I hadn't really considered that. Well assuming you're exporting into the H264 codec, chroma subsampling is typically 4:2:0 so you're already losing quite a bit of colour information and in turn saving space, so I'm not entirely sure how lowering overall bitrate ties into that. When it comes to compression it can be so dynamic as a shot of a blank wall is gonna need way less compression than a shot of a tree with a bunch of branches. I imagine just sticking with a variable bit rate output and capping max rate is probably your best bet. If you're real hard up for optimal compression though, I'm sure you could tool around with Handbrake and sort something out there. Hope that helps.
Totally. I completely agree about a color managed workflow cause then you can work in a big color space and output to your desired space super easy. In this case I felt it was pretty info dense and I didn't want to throw on how to use and setup RCM on top of everything else. I always find myself wondering if I made the right call for things like that. Definitely lots more to learn and improve upon making these instructional videos. Thanks for the feedback.
would you ever do a video on getting certain "movie" looks.... as in the look of the movie Seven or Saving Private Ryan? those are always interesting ... at least to me, i like the bleached bypass look and would be curious as how to get that look in Davinci - thanks for all the great videos!
Yeah for sure. I did do a look for uncut gems and the lighthouse about a month ago. I also super quickly go over getting the bleach bypass look in my "how to use versions" video. I'll for sure keep that in mind for future videos though.
@@NathanCarterVids oh okay, thanks, i will go watch your uncut gems one now, your one on "lighthouse" got me thinking of different movies, really good stuff, i hope you keep making these
I'm going hella honest. I'm here because I shot a music video and the last scene is whooping my ass. Shot indoors sony a7iii - s-gamuntCine3 and the footage looks horrible. I'm just going to turn it B&W. 🤦🏿♂️🤣Lawwwdd knws I wish I could go back and reshoot it.
nathan, i am practicing some editing, what is the easiest way to cut out a portion of my footage, i guess i could use the blade tool and make cuts and then delete the portion i dont want but is there an easier way? thanks!!
So if I'm understanding you correctly you have a clip that you only want a specific portion of? So what I do for that is In the media pool I play the clip from there and drag the play head to where I want it to start and press "i" for my in point and then take it to where I want it to stop and press "o" for my outpoint. You can then drag that segment onto your timeline, you could also make subclips by pressing alt "b". If I mis understood and you're actually looking to trim a clip faster within the timeline just click on the clip and press Ctrl + shift + [ to get the in point and it will cut on your playhead and Ctrl + shift + ] for your outpoint. Hope that helps.

This was very interesting, and valuable. Thanks for the video !
Good stuff! I used to use color filters when shooting b/w film to hide skin blemishes etc. Thanks for the great video!!
Thanks for the cool tutorial. I am just learning Resolve and tutorials like this help a LOT!
Happy to help

yes absolutely. Honestly a fade to white applied very quickly could be really effective for something like this.
Brooo huge thanks for posting this!
amazing video Nathan, Thank you!
Sometimes just having a low budget makes one shoot in B & W as color film is double the cost of B & W (at least it was in the 90's).
Thanks for the help!
Great tutorial! Very helpful! Thanks ☺️☺️!!
Glad it was helpful!

Is it better to shoot in B&W right away, does it have any benefits over just grading the color shot?
nooooo shoot in colour so you can adjust the black and white completely
Thanks for this nice short video.
What about exporting. Can the bit rate be lowered for BW, and by how much?

i need help when i add videos it just shows black
Can you be more specific? Do you mean when you import clips it just shows it as black?
@@NathanCarterVids when i insert a video and try watching it all it shows is a black screen i even tried linking it
@@itsaer0 have you tried restarting resolve
I have a question, how do you color grade black and red?
I'm not entirely sure what you mean? Like create a look that involve black and red?
Thank you.
No worries!
Loving the content man but why use LUTs for colour transform over colour management? I find LUTs to be a little destructive at times. Thanks!
