  • In this section, Andy talks about video distribution on the cart using a matrix SDI router and computer IO. He's using a Blackmagic Smart Videohub 40×40 on the cart, with a Smart Controller for distribution. Computer input and output is via a Blackmagic Ultra Studio 4K.

How do you compare this build to what is available today? Do you have any articles using other newer systems?

Here is a response from Nic, one of our tech specialists:
The principles and basic equipment needs of a DIT cart described here in Andy's video still hold true, though there many be smaller or more versatile versions of certain specific hardware. We still use that cart for various projects around the AbelCine offices. Perhaps if there is enough interest, we will release more content on the topic in the future. Thanks for your comment!

noob question: how do you connect the output footage to the smart video hub? Is it through something like UltraStudio Mini Monitor?

I'm confused about the relationship between the smart videohub and the smart controller. Is the latter one just an interface? If so wouldn't the videohub allow you to do the same exact thing using its own controls?

Richard Strong Yes the Smart controller is just an interface for the Videohub. You can control the videohub directly via it's interface or via Blackmagic software. The reason I like the Smart controller is that it really speeds things up. You can switch signals back and forth very quickly, and even setup macros to change things at once. It's not needed, but certainly handy.

Andy Shipsides Ah, thanks! I actually thought about getting the 12x12 videohub which seems to take up the same rack space as the controller. So I guess in my case the controller would be surplus to requirements.

Richard Strong The 12x12 makes much more sense - 40x40 is WAY overkill, it's just what I happened to have available.
