Restoration of a breitling chronomat 81950 In this video we look at the servicing and oiling of the famous chronograph movement valjoux 7750 17 jewel version - tutorial. We polish the case and repair the bezel, including gold plating the bezel riders, chronograph pushers and crown. The chronograph and crown tubes also get some help.

Thank you everyone for your kind and encouraging words. I understand that some people’s first language may not be English so they may prefer to just hear the sounds of the tools rather than mute the whole video. So let’s just be kind and understanding towards those who prefer no commentary
Keep the commentary👍🏽
Spectacular. 👌. Made my day 🤝
I prefer the commentary, but I accept that some may not.
I love the commentary, especially the humour and interruptions from your children. Also getting your son to operate the tweezers for a short while is exactly how to educate children especially in these difficult times. I'm originally from Rugby a short drive from you but now live in California. I have a passion for automatic watches like most of the watches that you repair, I just purchased a Vaer with a Miyota 9015 Automatic Movement, very pleased so far.
Very nice restoration! Can I ask where did you get the strap for this watch?
Your commentary is about 90% of what makes these videos awesome please don’t stop that.
exactly - if people dont want noise or speaking hit the mute button.
Not just commentary, but the genuine nature of the commentary. One reason I prefer this channel over others is that the other channels make comments as if the content is not prerecorded. Its fine if commentary is not live, but it feels really fake to pretend.
I actually enjoy the commentary - thanks.
Would not have been the same without the commentary
Me too!
Me too!
Ditto, Rick.👍
Count me in for the commentary.
I love that you're not just repairing watches, but showing us what an amazing person you are.
I only came across this channel today and can I say what an amazing human being this man is. Not only is he a gifted craftsman, but also an inspiring, generous, humble and wise individual.
Thank you for sharing your humour, knowledge and wisdom and for brightening my day. You are a wonderful role model in a world that desperately needs more people like you 😊👍🏻
Thank you Spider-Man

When a master of his craft talks, you listen.
Well said. Wisdom is priceless so if someone is willing to share you shut up and listen.
well said
👏👏
Well said my friend
My life's motto :)
There aren't very many hour long videos that I'm willing to sit through, you are the exception. Thank you.
I felt the same!
I don't even realize this video is an hour long until I saw the time marker when the video almost ends. This is so enjoyable and soothing, it felt like only 15 minutes. I absolutely loose a sense of time watching this
I totally agree I totally lose track of time enjoying this . I'll never fix a watch... I don't even own a watch and I watch this
Never apologize for the length of your videos! When restoring or rebuilding ANYTHING you run unexpected issues. Having you include them in your videos helps out others who may come across similar issues, and that's part of what these videos are all about. And as a complete newb to this profession, the commentary is definitely appreciated!
Some people just have no respect for someone’s hard work and dedication. I, for one, love hearing your soothing commentary and the love you have for your family. Keep up the great work, we’ll be here waiting for any new content, even that “quartz crisis” you spoke of. It sounds quite interesting. Also, why is it that some think super glue is an appropriate thing to use to fix a timepiece, that’s just asinine.
I love your commentary. A man who loves his children is a credit to himself, his family & the human race. A child's genuine laughter is a musical sound that soothes the soul. Thanks for the incredible videos. Please keep the format the same!
Fab result how much is that thing worth ??
Completely agree!
He has the hands of a major brain surgery doctor .
As a father of 4, the kids laugh makes me smile
@sub - Agreed. Well said!
I agree with Frank; "commentary is spectacular and entertaining", not to mention that you have a wonderful sense of humour, "rounding out a complete video enjoyment".
I absolutely love watching your videos. Your sense of humor and your uplifting spirit is truly something to be admired. Don’t stop doing what you’re doing I love all of it. Even the people who might say there is too much commentary.… I disagree completely. You are an awesome and funny and seem like a great family man. Keep up the good content and proper spirit. It’s helping us who are struggling. Take care.
Thank you 🙏
You took the words right out of my mouth. Hang in there friend.
Every time I watch/listen to you restoring a beautiful timepiece, I am amazed at how you seem to restore something in me as well. Hope for the inmate goodness of mankind and hope for the potential that lies in all of us. You have brightened my day again! Thank you!
Let the silent minority simply mute their speakers. I strongly prefer your narration of the magic that is worked by your hands! AND the musical sounds of your child!
i agree
100% correct! Love to hear your voice and explanations (not to mention your humor and perspectives) Thank you! (BTW - Stunning work (as usual)!)
Agreed. A simple remedy for those objecting to sound... just turn it off. I use that technique on occasion. Wonderful option if needed.
It's not the same.....people still want to hear the work being done and the sounds but no voice.
@Jonathan Ham... I see your point. I do now recall other channels that provide the sound but no commentary. Certainly a personal choice.
No, I don't like to see a version with no commentary!!! Your comments are spectacular and make you're videos fun to watch especially the funny comments of your son!!!!! Besides you're great skills I should ad, not that you think that otherwise I would find them boring. ;)
Keep them coming!!!!
Agree....that’s the whole point of this channel isn’t it.
Agree 2! The best watch maker channel!
I agree - love the commentary.
And for those that don’t - you do realise you can turn the volume down / off 🤣🙊
Whoever doesn’t like your commentary and family is devoid of something
It’s great and very warming actually,
Keep it up
I love hearing the sound of children. My kids are all grown up now but I do have 2 grandchildren and I spend as much time as I can with them. Oh and I do enjoy watching your videos so please keep them going. Thank you
This is not a watch restoration, this is sanity restoration.
@Junior Mudd It makes me happy at a very deep level.
Well said.
Yes, it really is!!
@@nomebear I think that's why "restoration UA-cam" is becoming so popular. It does us all good to see a master take something that's been ruined and restore it to beautiful, functional condition. I'll never repair a watch or a shoe, or restore fine art or antique furniture, but watching the videos of those who do is to see a small part of an insane, broken world put back the way it should be.
I always use a minion to help me.
Your narration is wonderful. I prefer to hear the what and why and how you did what you did. Its your channel boss. Make it how you see fit. Yes I would like to hear your opinion on the quartz crisis.
I have searched everywhere to find a watchmaker repair my 1940s breitling chronograph and not a single one will do the work , I even sent it to breitling for help they sent it back saying no , can't help. It sits in my top draw waiting to pass it on to my son. And yet here you are presenting miracles, it makes me wonder if they really are watchmakers.
Wonderful, just wonderful.
I never get tried of watching a master at his craft, but even more so when that craftsman has a heart to give the finished product back to the original owner who through difficulty had no other choice but to sell it.
Well done and be blessed as you have blessed others 🙏
This is the longest unboring watch restoration I’ve watched on UA-cam and by far the most educational one.. Thanks for sharing and educating us..
I would have liked it to be the full length version but am grateful for anything you share with us.
*Yes, I agree!*
Mate, I watch your videos from start to fin and as a professional mechanical engineer (albeit on larger things) i cannot get over how you do what you do. I like what you do to the extent that you've now got me interested in the actual mechanics of watches. The commentary is smooth and relaxing as you're doing intricate work and the way your kids are interspersed through the piece are just sublime. Educational AND respectful to your audience. Love your style and hope to see many more watch repairs and cleaning in the future.
Thanks Adam
For me your running commentary is one of the reasons i watch , humorous and witty . thank you again keep talking and involving the family.
Thanks Victor
Hi, Joe. I watch your videos specifically because of the comments (yours + your kid's - I have a little son too, BTW). Your commentary + colourful language is what makes you stand out from the crowd - please keep it up!
"The 2 most powerful things in existence, a kind word and thoughtful gesture"
Much needed in the modern world .
Whoever said that didn't know that nukes were coming
Wow! What a beautiful and caring thing to do for the 'tinkerer'. I loved the skill and commentary... And of course the patient and wonderful way that the children were included, even when being a little naughty. Thanks very much for a great video.
this how you will get struck listening to all. I love your commentary and deep sense of humor
YOU Sir, are a wonderful human being to give this piece of great restoration back to him... I clap at the end of ALL your vdos, as much for your words of wisdom, as your restorations !! Do keep the words flowing and ignore those who would be better off, watching another channel !!
Sorry for those who do not like certain aspects....but your constant jibar Jabar is most enlightening and fun...and informative.so jiba-jaba on.....
Why would you not want to listen to this fella. Love his commentary.
You are a true gentleman, and I thoroughly enjoy your channel. I can just imagine how overjoyed the individual must have been when you returned his timepiece! ✌️
The reason your vlog is standing out is because of your witty and sometimes thoughtful commentary. Your video without your voiceover would be like a Van Gogh painting without its vivid colors.
After almost two years, I happened to watch this. The last part of this video showed me how big your heart is.
Hey Nekkid. I don't really know you or your content and I know you probably won't see this, but this was the last youtube video my dad watched before he died. I know he watched you a lot so I just wanted to say thank you for providing him with all of the entertainment you did. You and content creators similar to you left him in awe at your craft. So again, thank you.
When I first saw the state this watch was in I thought it had to be a write-off, just a parts salvage. How it ended up has has me seriously questioning if this man has powers beyond those of us who are ordinary mortals. What a transformation. I did not think it was possible. Wow.
Your commentary is pure gold. Anyone who says differently is dead from the neck up. Please never change your format. It's Nietzsche crossed with Socrates crossed with Jesus too. It's beautiful. And the cameo your beloved son makes is nothing short of poetry. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Blessed is the peacemaker. Authentic life of peace. This channel pours out faith, hope, love and peace. The commentary is essential for understanding.
This watch cleaned up nicely. What a lovely gesture to give him his watch back working. Thanks for being. Peace and happiness to you sir. See you on this next one.
The commentary is what makes the channel. I love it and keep being you!
I happened on your channel and the moment I heard children's laughter I knew I had to subscribe. Our boys sre 30and 27 now and the very best days of my life was thier childhood days. They are both excellent men and having no children of their own yet, look at me in bewilderment. I could NEVER be a watch maker I have the patience of a " well" old phart, so I would suppose I am living up my reputation. Cheers and Stay Well and Be Blessed Jack
To the people that don't like hearing him talk most devices that youvare watch his videos on have this new thing called volume control button. It makes it to where you can't hear his voice, I know right it's amazing. As for the people like me that like hearing him talk about the watch and what he is doing or whatever he wants to talk about like myself, let's enjoy this amazing video.
your narration is why i come back everytime ,just keep doing what you're doing.
Speak up Sir. Narration is wonderfully witty and most articulate.
Have the people who prefer no commentary or music never heard of a volume button? I love your commentary by the way.
I love your interaction with your children. You appear to be a kind and compassionate father. It is so good to see there are great craftsmen in the world who are also loving and patient with young boys fighting anywhere near this monstrously complex little machine. Thankyou for who you are and what you do.
I cannot watch your videos without commentary! This restoration is incredible 🙂
Hi Nekkid Watchman, commentary in my point of view is one of the reasons I watch your channel, let the no commentary be in the link , forget them other people, even if they the majority, you need to be you..... Don't let them push you around. Continue master watchman....
Everyone is intitled to their own opinion of course but I personally enjoy your vocal videos- your humor lightens the mood and the manner in which you treat your Son reflects the patience one must have in the trade of Watch Making. I would add that even more comentary naming the parts removed and what they do would be an additional benefit. No one can ever gain too much information. Great Videos!
I prefer to have your comments with the video.
Otherwise it would be "just" a tutorial, without humor.
Don't let the trolls get to you, you are doing an excelldnt job!
.
"The school was open for one week - and then somebody sneezed".
Priceless.
Without your voice it wouldn't be the same. Love the sense of humor and your humbleness. Let those mute them selves if they don't want to hear anything.
This was such a complex restoration. Bless you for returning it to 'the Tinkerer' after all of that labor.
Your commentary is one of the major things that make your content so special to me.
I wish I was as articulate as some of those who have commented on your inspiring videos.
Your intelligence and warmth shines through your commentary.
Good luck to you.
Those ones are missing out on the jokes and hilarity. I, myself prefer the commentary. 1 hour special, I better go get my snacks and settle in.
Maybe they don't understand the language... Or they don't like positivity in their lives...
I may not afford this watch, but happy to see you to give this watch a new life. Good wishes and good luck.
youtube’s algorithm brought me here after one year. your videos have become some sort therapy for me. excellent work !
Thank you 🙏
As my grandma would have said " you're a sweetheart" Kudos to you, and I hope your generosity returns to you tenfold.
Thanks dale
Some folks would complain that their ice cream is too cold! Please continue your commentary. Your children are a welcome addition to your content. Peace to you and your family!
Brain freeze!!!
The original owner of that watch must have worn it everyday for decades to have amassed that much damage. Remarkable work as usual.
Paul Fellows agreed. Rough and ready is one thing, but this watch looks like it had been thrown out the window of a moving car, and then lay in the gutter for a few months. Or else scooped up by a beachcomber.
@@franciscodanconia45 - When you are in highly compensated 'manual' labor - s..t happens and your arms and and hands are where the results end up.
@Paul Fellows Agreed! My first breitling chronomat from 2004 is STILL in perfect condition- Not a single scratch anywhere-though I do not wear it everyday. With care, they will last many hundreds of years.
If I'm going to waste time on UA-cam, then I'm going to waste my time watching your videos to both relax and learn - and commentary is just fine by me!
And on that note, I did learn that the reason why movements such as the 7750 had a 17 jewel version is because US Customs regulations charged more for watches over 17 jewels and less for 17 and fewer. It certainly makes sense that Breitling would use this version of the Valjoux in order to save a few dollars at this time in their history.
We don't need no steenkin' silence. I prefer the commentary. It gives character to your vids. Keep up the good worx.
Doesn't matter how long it is provided the content is good, which it is.
Before I retired I was a CT and MRI scanner engineer. The greatest compliment ever paid me was by a Consultant Neurosurgeon - quite a famous one! I had their then CT scanner in a million bits, in order to get at some deeply buried part that had failed. I was quite happy fettling away when this chap came in to the scan room. After a few seconds, he shook his head and turned to go. "I cannot understand how you know where everything goes, Rog."
The same goes for you, Nekkid, without an obvious mechanical system, you know where everything goes AND the name of it. Keep the commentary mate, that's what makes it so soothing and interesting. Great vlog, beautiful result.
Thanks roger
Hi Nekkid, I thoroughly enjoyed watching your restoration project.
I also must say, your ethos is above and beyond many. As for some individuals who have insulted you, I feel nothing but pity for them, as they have no clue of what their poor existence on this planet is all about. Well, go and find the person who owned the watch before and present it with love and gratitude. The Universe will reward you a million fold.
Keep up your good work.
Best regards,
Alexander
I come here for the fun commentary. Love when your son comes in to chat.
To be honest I don't know anything about watches or repairing. When I came across this channel in my feed I was at first fascinated by how a watch was made, then I realized you were making jokes, your children voices in the background, and was teaching history. I'm still not sure how you remember where those tiny parts go, and if not for you Sir I would not have subscribed. Your restorations are awesome and if you please, shoe your youngest, (the one who said he didn't like you much today) You sound like a great dad also. Your videos with the commentary sets you apart.
I love your commentary. Your humour, and especially the banter with young "Trouble" is lovely. It's what makes your videos special and unique.
Never noticed that it took almost an hour to watch everything. i was so glued to the whole process. That's one very fine watch and you, Sir are a genius!
I love your narration and quirky humor :)
When you see all these "watchmakers" on youtube changing dials, hands, bezels, and bracelets, and thats it, then you see a true craftsman like this man, there's no comparison.
I am very impressed with your commentary you use the language precisely and concisely without boring repetition. Not many people are able to do that.
I really like the fact you include your child instead of shooing them away. Feed their curiosity as much as you can.
True
One of the reasons I watch is for the commentary. I like the info & humour. Keep em coming mate. 👍
Pls dont skip the commentary!!! I love it. Muting is easer than you think:)
who would want to watch with no commentary? the reason i watch is for your relaxing voice and comedic attitude
The commentary is fine. The kids in the background make it real. I love your work. Wish I could do it. If someone doesn’t like your natation and music, every platform anyone would use has a volume control.
The watch restoration was beautiful. I would be proud to wear it.
Your videos make it look so easy .
I love your humorous commentary, interaction with your kids and all the SciFi reference. I prefer commentary as I love to learn and greatly dislike all the silent videos.
Kudos and love to you, your family and your spirit!
Dude... Most outstanding!
I tip my hat to you for reuniting the tinkerer with his watch! For many their adventure through time has taken a most serious turn and left them having to let go of things that give them joy... Bogus...I am sure that by doing this for him you have brought some joy back to him!
You are blessed!
Party on!
You are a good man, I would see reaction of that man when you give him watch back! Hello from Oslo !
We can only imagine his shock and delight.
I too would love to see that
Before or after getting the bill?
I find your commentary naturally funny and absolutely enjoyable. The fact that you made another video without commentary just shows your class and I hope they appreciate it. You are a natural at this, please keep up the great work.
I watch your channel because I enjoyed your comments and the sounds of your little family and daily life. If others don't then this is not the channel for them.
The black band with white thread really makes the watch pop . I'm sure if you present it back to the seller you will make his day. " So shines a good deed in a weary world ".
Children are a blessing. The sounds of children are the sounds of life.
“So he will be annoy...helping us out for a couple of weeks” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Your banter is exactly why I watch your channel. Your dealing with the Accountant and your Apprentice Trouble is what makes your UA-cam Channel so enjoyable to watch again and again.
I love to listen to your calming words. Most media players come with a volume control. If I didn't want to listen to you I could probably work out how to use it. 🤦🏻♂️
Let the philistines exercise their mute icon and continue in the darkness of silence! As for me and mine; we love the narration (and the young one). :-)
Hello darkness my old friend
This guy is a magician. These watches look like they've come off the shelf..Sort my 64 omega..love you videos bro.
I follow a few watchmakers, but I enjoy your voice and commentary the most. Your sense of humor is refreshing but not nearly as much as your sense of humanity. Thank you for your wholesome commentary. Finally, it takes a special amount of patience and love, to calmly pause a task that is consuming one’s attention to give one’s children the attention they do deserve from their parents. I wish I could go back and change all those times I told my child that “Daddy is too busy right now”. You’re doing it correctly my friend.
Thank you 🙏
Man, I just love what you did to this watch. I don't know why I like these Breitling watches and this one, though I wasn't aware this model exists, it's exactly what I've imagined for the perfect wrist watch.
Love it! Every time I see that you've posted a new video, I find a quiet place to watch interrupted. You have a soothing voice, and your humor and insight are very welcoming in our lives. Keep doing your videos like this, please! Stunning watch restoration!
*My, my my!!! . . .* What an absolutely _STUNNING_ transformation!!! . . . .
This neglected and misused piece of superb Swiss watchmaking art at last found it's rescuer! . . .
What a treat to be able to watch the whole process, and to behold the marvelous end result!...
The entire narrative is utterly captivating from start to finish, liberally sprinkled with humor, love and philosophical nuggets! . . . .
(And, also: Thanks for the timely and important note at the very end, re. the individual burdens, worries and struggles kept hidden from the illumination of daylight, to which I, and so many others can relate . . . . )
*Nekkid Watchmer* - Thanks! 💓
Its very nice to think of someone that doesn't speak your language, but I enjoy your voice. Its very soothing. Its one of the reason I watch and listen to your video. I say, just keep doing what you do and we will just keep on enjoying what you do!
Your voice is absolutely therapeutic.I always watch the same video at night and first thing in the morning since I fall asleep .Please don't mind the haters..they are sad people who have no joy in their life.."they don't like nobody" was spot on .!Deepest respect and much appreciation ❤
I 🧡 your commentary and the beautiful sound of your wonderful family life🧡
Thank you everyone for your kind and encouraging words. I understand that some people’s first language may not be English so they may prefer to just hear the sounds of the tools rather than mute the whole video. So let’s just be kind and understanding towards those who prefer no commentary
"Greetings my fellow cohabitants of the planet"
That was worth the whole video.
Great job
As mechanical contractor. I can appreciate the Beauty and the Art of your craft. It is so nice to see other people that take pride in what they do have you and it shows in your craftsmanship
Most interesting Joe because I own this first edition from many years ago - it was my first grail watch I bought from my naval pay when I came home after 6 months at sea! I was so proud, so in love with this beautiful Navitimer! You see, I served in the Royal Navy for 30 years. It is most interesting seeing the innards of this watch because I have never seen anything of the like in mine. You managed to restore this fine timepiece and made me so glad and grateful for finding your channel. Massive hugs and big blessings to you from Wendi, LtCdr (retired) RN. 🌻🌻🌻🌻🌻
Thank you 🙏
