  • Just a 9 Minute tutorial on how to apply Morph targets in 3ds max.
    This modifier should go under the skin modifier when applying to a character.
    Please watch more than once, sorry for going so fast... I'm limited by the time on UA-cam. :(

    What you need to do is drag shift the mesh so that you have a copy (not a reference or instance) of the original mesh. *Do not* press right click> convert to> convert to editable poly - the morpher will not work if you do that. Then you need to go to the modifier stack on the right hand side. Click on the skin modifier and anything else you have other than editable poly and delete either by right clicking or by hitting the little bin on the right. Follow the tutorial from there. Does that help?

    Are you able to morph a box into a Boolean? I am trying to animate a solid box into one with a chunk missing.

    • @ShadowTajun
      @ShadowTajun  10 років тому

      I don't believe so, I've never needed to try it. I would assume it turns it into a different object which would mean that the IDs would be different.

    Great video. But I'd like to have different morph targets acting in my timeline without them getting mixed up and cluttered.
    Is there a way to isolate the morph target's values for specific key frames?
    For example, I want one target to act from frames 10-20, and another target from 30-50, and another from 70-100. But as of now, they all start acting from the initial key frame in the time slider.
    Any info will b appreciated. Thnx

    • @ShadowTajun
      @ShadowTajun  9 років тому +1

      Thanks for your comment. The best option is to "key" your morph targets at frames 10, 20, 30, 50, 70 and 100. When you have the modifier tab open and Auto Key on, take a look at the spinner. It should flick red when there is a key on it. So what you need to do is force this to happen by moving the slider up (let it go) and then down (and leave it there) on the frames you don't want it to move on. (You should be able to change what gets keyed by right clicking on the key button down the bottom right.)
      Alternatively if you take a look at wireparameters this will give you a physical item - like a circle - to move and key. This video explains what wireparameters are ua-cam.com/video/xIDD45gAaq0/v-deo.html and this video will show you how you can use wireparameters to create keyable controls ua-cam.com/video/5uvSfG_BrfY/v-deo.html.
      If these videos aren't good, or don't explain it the way you can understand then all you need to do is search for "Morph Targets + Custom UI" or "Morph Targets + Wire Parameters" or "Morph Targets + 3dsmax + Reaction Manager". Hope that helps and thanks again for the question. ShadowTajun

    Thank you very much! I never thought I'd find anything that could allow me to morph between objects like this! I hope I know how to use this. Do you have any tips that could help me? Basically I'm gonna morph a ball into a big tent.

    • @ShadowTajun
      @ShadowTajun  8 років тому

      +Rudi Hamdi I would make the tent first and apply the Spherify Modifier instead. See if that works first. Otherwise you can try Morph Targets as a secondary option. Good luck!

    I'm pretty new to morphing in 3d max. I'm having some issues with morphing 2 completely separate and different objects with very different shapes. I've taken a lot of time to make sure they have the same number of verts but when I morph the one it messes up severely. I can use some suggestions, thanks.

    • @ShadowTajun
      @ShadowTajun  8 років тому

      +stever73 irritatingly you will not be able to morph 2 completely separate and different objects with very different shapes with this method. Morph targets require the same object to be adjusted with the same amount of verts. This is mainly because vert numbers are assigned to the vertices and they will be reset and changed in a separete mesh (that isn't a copy of the original). However you might get the skill you need here: ua-cam.com/video/P3y1Cdm9KN0/v-deo.html
      Alexandra uses a tricky method that could help you get what you want. Think a little out of the box after watching this tutorial. I would try this technique to create a copy of the original and the use the skin wrap to move the vertices to the separate object. This should keep the vertex number the same and the morph should work as you plan. (I'd at least give it a go) - Good luck with it. I'd love to hear if it worked.

    how do you save this to a video file format? is it possible to save it also as an animated rendered scene

    • @ShadowTajun
      @ShadowTajun  6 років тому

      On the main toolbar, click "Render Setup". (Teapot with a cog icon)
      - Under the "Common" tab, In the "Time Output" group, choose "Active Time Segment" instead of "Single" or choose a range of frames to render.
      - In "Output Size" choose a size you want to render at
      - In "Render Output" click "Files" and choose where to save your file. If you have Quicktime installed on your computer you'll be able to save as a ".mov" file, otherwise choose a ".avi" file. (Or you can research how to turn an image sequence into a video and choose to render as a .jpeg sequence)
      - Make sure in the top drop down boxes (in 2019) that you choose the correct camera or view you want to render from.
      - Hit "Render" at the top right of that window.
      If you want to do a preview render/playblast before hand,
      - Go to "Tools" menu "Preview">"Grab Viewport">"Create Preview Animation".
      - If you are using Alt menus, choose "Rendering menu">"Screen Capture">"Create Preview Animation".
      Hopefully I didn't misunderstand your question.

    No, a 2 minute tutorial on morph targets. 7 minutes watching you deform cubes, could have been prepared in advance.
