Today we're saying goodbye to our G3-swapped Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh - most likely the only such TAM in existence. But they computer we're trading it for is something else...

Sad to see the ridiculously upgraded TAM go, but hey, no point in keeping it if it doesn't get used. I have a whole bunch of vintage Macs I need to get rid of too.

@@Flutterwhat Well this was a special circumstance... A friend had these in a warehouse that was going to get torn down. Either I took them or they got thrown away.
The TAM always represented peak 90s, pre-Jobs Apple for me. I still love the design.
Jobs allegedly threw the TAM he was presented with in the trash immediately after the show. Like, right there.

This is a bit late, but I wonder if you could have 3d printed a cover to go over all of that crap which stuck out the back of the TAM.

Regarding the subwoofer’s volume knob: a long time ago I purchased a Performa 6400 for literally £1; the only physical damage was that the integrated subwoofer was set to maximum volume and couldn’t be turned down - which I discovered when I decided to play _ShadowWraith_ and the game’s startup SFX (“Bioclone activated”) was loud enough to be heard in the street :/

You made the right call. I don't know why; I'm a hardcore Mac collector, but I've never found the TAM that compelling. I think it looked amazing in its day but it just looks dated now. You got the better end of the deal with the Lisa.. that's really cool that he was willing to swap with you. They are going for far more than the TAMs lately. Enjoy!
"In its day" I can vouch for the fact that everyone who ever looked at it ALWAYS had to walk up closer, and peer around the back, because there was essentially no other desktop computers that used an LCD - everyone was looking for the "rest" of the computer. (Yes, I believe Sony had an LCD-based desktop before the TAM, but it was not a mainstream device, though nor was the TAM with only 12,000 made.)
disappointed that we never got to see OS X on this but I’m excited to see the Lisa though!!
I know you can run OS XX on a TAM with a G3 upgrade, but given the way this one was updated, I'd be very cautious! Trying to instal OS X on a normal TAM results in bricking the machine. Been there, screamed that. Days spent sitting in internet cafes (back when they were a thing) trying to find a way to un-brick it...

Hearing that most TAMs have issues with the disc cover makes me thankful that mine still works great. I’m the original owner and am gonna keep taking care of it!

Excited to see the Lisa, but I'll be honest, my guess was a Next Cube. I'm not saying it would've been a fair trade, but I can hope can't I? That or trying to sneak in a last-second entry for SepTandy with a TRS system would've been neat to see too!
Oh man, I loved Elite Force. Probably tied with Wolfenstein ET as my most played game on that engine.
TAMs used to come up on eBay pretty regularly, but these days they are becoming rarer and rarer. I imagine by this point in time, 27 years later, that a great many TAMs from the original 12,000 production run are now in landfill. Great news for the value of my TAM with all original packaging but hey, I'd prefer there to still be a lot of them out in the wild being enjoyed...
Loads of people would be angry at you for selling/trading it, but they don't realize that trading/selling this stuff is what our hobby keeps us getting our money back, so we can buy a NEW awesome thing !! :D

I remember seing a TAM in a local Apple/ Macintosh specialty shop in my area before there was a thing such as a Apple store. And I remember reading about the Lisa in a bunch of old computer magazines that were given to me when I was like 10 and began fixing family and friends computers and acquiring second hand tech and cobbling it together in bizzare ways. Never owned or sawa a Lisa in real life though sadly, at least not yet. But I did just see a documentary here on YT last night about em: Before Macintosh: The Apple Lisa" Full Documentary Film, Free. I can't wait to see what you come up with! :)

What's the fastest CPU upgrade that'll fit in a Lisa? A PAK 68/3 with a 50MHz 68030, maybe?

I remember in the late 80's or early 90's there was some company that had bought up a large haul of Apple Lisas, and was updating them to run (then) current MacOS systems. Didn't have the money for one then (with the value on them now, *still* don't have the money) but it was one of those systems I lusted after.
The company was probably Sun Remarketing.
i don't know why you upgraded it to a G3, i would have at least did a 603, 300MHZ, so i could still RUN BEOS. You know about BeOS don't you? of course you do! BeOS wont run on a PPC G3 only because apple wouldnt give up specs of CPU board to Be. Been there, Done that, back in 2000.And yes i miss the old BeOS. I used to run it on everything.i cant wait for Lisa shenanigans

aint no reason this needed to be a video at all. Sitting on a self is entirely your fault, plenty of games, software, oddities that you could cover that are compatible with the TAM. All you did was make a self indulgent rehash of previous content and literal spoilers for the Lisa videos. this whole video could have been a tweet.
