Now with the Ultimate edition, which uses the Saturn 4mb RAM cart, transparencies have been restored & performance improved. Also it is fully translated! The map is fixed and can be accessed outside of the inventory. Also in teleport rooms they added writing above the portal to say where they are! It's absolutely amazing.
The delay in bringing up the Map makes the Saturn version a tough pick. My God the map is very important for exploring and it feels like it takes forever to toggle back & forth. The PlayStation has the map on screen all the time. To hell with this version. Stupid mistake!
Nice and informative video, Lucian. I enjoyed that rather than reviewing this timeless classic, you highlighted elements of it that fans may have missed, had they not had the opportunity to pick up/play the Saturn version. Great job!
Im playing the game fort the First time , i choose the saturn version but i play with the Dracula X ultimate Version with my pseudo kai . So i have the best version of all , this version use the 4mb of the card to add a lot of effect that saturn version dont have , a quick acces to the map, The english patch , less drop framerate , shortless loading etc... Im one the inverted Castle This game is amazing
Great video Lucian! It's strange, I wouldn't say I was a massive fan of the Castlevania series but I really enjoyed 4 on the SNES and have played a bit of the NES games but strangely I've never played anything after 4. But after seeing this video I'm keen to try this one and perhaps expand my Castlevania experience with some of the later stuff too. I think it's cool that they at least tried to compensate for the technical issues by adding extra stuff. A lot of other game developers are happy enough just to make a poor port and leave it at that.
The new areas are obviously shoe horned in. They feel cramped and tiled together like metroid maps. The new bad guys are typical. The familiars are just the missing ones from the japan ps1, which are accessible in all versions via game shark. Maria is pretty broken, she is more fun to play on the PsP release. The running shoes are neat.
None of the original garden remains. All that is left in the ps1 version is the opening by the drawbridge and all that is down there is a save room. There is some level data garbage left over in the rom, but the tilesets, sounds and sprites were all trimmed out to conserve disc space. The extra Saturn content was all developed by the same Konami subsidiary that brought us the horrible N64 Castlevania games and Circle of the Moon. The only thing left over from the original garden were concept notes and sketches. Thats why the level looks really tiled and cramped and why none of the enemy sprites look quite right, they were developed after the fact by an entirely different team.
I don’t think the Saturn was technically inferior, just different. It absolutely could’ve done this game way better than it did. We’re so lucky to have the people like Meduza hacking it to bring it closer to the kind of quality they have for the for the ps1. It’s not perfect, but it’s way way way better as it stands in the hacks current state. All those transparencies being restore is nice, and the load times and direct map access is so fucking helpful and fun.
Surely the Saturn was a totally different beast compared to the PS1, but it's just that the Saturn was so famous for doing 2D right, that having this classic PS1 game being an inferior version, felt so wrong! I'm just glad the community of modders stepped in and saved the day like they always do
@LucianTheWorldGamer we all know the saturn version is the inferior port.so obviously the PS1 was and still is the best way to experience this game.why don't the hackers just build off of that success and make the game even better add new levels add new monsters and items add new bosses.why try to make the saturn version better when it already had a bad port and for the most part it still didn't out class the PS1 version and it never will

Yes, I'm so glad that modders saved this game!
Playing it right now on the Saroo and it really is excellent.
is it on switch?

I agree, but if you play the fan patch the map access is made bearable
I like the fact that we are getting a symphony of the night overview by a guy that kind of sounds like Dracula or Igor from Frankenstein
What is a man??
@@LucianTheWorldGamer a miserable pile of secrets! But enough talk have at you!
Great video Lucian! I was looking for an explanation of the differences in the Saturn version, and this was perfect 👌🏼 Thanks for uploading 😃👍🏻
Thank you for your kind words!!

Thank you so much! I am a big fan of your content!
Rondo of Blood Richter was like the only thing good to come out of that anime style.

Castlevania 4 is definitely a good place to start, but Symphony will certainly open more doors to Castlevania for you, surely! Cheers!
Saturn is the best experience to play this game.
Thanks to the fan patch, YES!! Also content-wise it has always been my favourite

Yes, the feeling is the same. But I couldn't help but get excited about new content for one of my favourite videogames ever!

Good video. Never knew the Underground Garden was in the PSOne ram.
Thanks a million, I'm sure that SOTN still must have some undiscovered secrets in its data....

How come I never heard about Richiter alternate costume in all this years?
The weird part is that it is actually much more faithful to the official artwork. That's what we should have gotten from the beginning! Cheers!
Because you're not in Japan.
Why cant the hackers just make an extended version of the PS1 original by adding new monsters and levels..
Yeah I wish there were more mods for PS1 available...

no i love the saturn version i wish there was more Saturn mods
Definitely not.
Well, the extra content is worth it, the technical mess that this game was... well, as you said, definitely not
@@LucianTheWorldGamer I find most of the extra content to be extra bad and actually a negative on the overall quality of the game .
@@LucianTheWorldGamer it is tho i love this version more then the ps1 version
