Thanks for showing us!. To plant tiny seeds like yarrow seems to be, I like to fold an 8x11 sheet of paper along the long side, then pour the seeds in there and the seeds form a line along the crease. By slightly tapping the sheet while at an angle pointing towards the pots the seeds start falling into them in a very controlled way.
Great idea. I have used 3x5 index cards but never a sheet of paper. I will try it this year. Thanks for the tip.
Yarrow attracts wasps, grow next to tomato’s so the wasps kill that hornworm.
I grow it in Florida zone 9a. Mine dried out and disappeared while in a pot. The potting soil was dehydrated. I assumed that no way it could return but I dropped the pot in a basin of water and it returned. This perfect for the wet/dry seasons of Florida.

Great advice on opening the seed packets from the bottom. One suggestion would be to top the seeds with a light layer of vermiculite. This helps to prevent dampening off. Also, I spray my seeds with a water bottle, but I add hydrogen peroxide to the water. This helps with germination. I use this method when growing all of my seedlings under grow lights, but it also works with any seed starting.

Started a bunch of multi-colored yarrow this winter. Main reason was to attract lacewings and native ladybird beetles. I am up in zone 5a in WI and have a lot of aphid pressure. Last year I bought some lacewing eggs and the larva wiped out the aphids, never saw another aphid all summer.

Nice! I agree that pots are better than direct sowing. Mice (or something) eat every seed here it seems. If anyone out there is about to buy seeds or get a start from a neighbor I wanted to give a heads up about yarrow hybrids. They are yellow or, any other color besides white and pink. These hybrids don't have any medicinal value. Only white and pink make medicine. The hybrids have a very different leaf than the others. I'm from Tennessee but, I'm way out in California. Nice to see a little of it through your content!

Thank you for this video. I plan to grow Yarrow this year for both medicinal and attracting pollinators. I would have made the mistake of covering the seeds with soil and later wonder why none of them sprouted. Thank again , looking forward to viewing more of your helpful growing hints.

This is an ideal seed to plant in milk plastic jugs or water jugs for over winter planting! Love yarrow

I was out and about today searching to find some wildhjj yarrow in order to make a poultice for my friend that fell in to some poison ivy.
It wasn't easy to find,
So now I want to grow it to make sure i can allways get some when needed.
My friend is in bad condition.. I hope this helps, I allso mixed it with plantain.
I have never used plantain for poison ivy but I have used yarrow and jewel weed with good results. Good luck to your friend I hope they get better. If you have any questions about growing yarrow let me know.
I started a Lot of varieties of flowers from seed this February including Baker Creek's love parade yarrow. I had luck w/ almost everything except for yarrow. I have attempted multiple times to get germination. I think my soil and seeds shifted while watering. I'm going to try your method for next go around.
I start yarrow every year with this method. Just make sure you mist them everyday. Or a couple times a day if you can. Good luck.

Thank you. He is allergic to all flea and tick medicine. The vet said to just bath him in dawn dishwashing liquid.It works ok but he still goes through spells of scratching.😀
Or treat the yard. I NEVER use chemicals on my pets. Especially flea n tick which is easily preventable on dogs with adding garlic to the food. Been doing it since 80's it works so amazing. Each dog gets enough for their size. Has yet to fail me. I stay far away for all chemicals on me n my pets. Ivermectin (not a chemical) is amazing monthly to keep worms under control. Including the heart worm. Dose according to weight. Take it myself as i have several pets. Natural is the way to go 👍🤛💪

@@journeytohealthafter60can cause anemia in dogs. Also Ivermectin can kill them. I know you have the dosages correct for you,but it's still dangerous to use by inexperienced people.
Thanks for sharing. I do have a question about your dog. I’ve read that yarrow is toxic to nothing cats and dogs. How do you keep your dog safely away from your yarrow plants? I’d love to learn how. We also have a cat that loves eating plants. I’d love to have bith yarrow and make tea to drink as well as tinctures but not at the detriment of our beloved pets. Thanks so much and God bless.❤

I wish I had watched this a few weeks ago! I planted seeds yarrow 1 foot a part next to a raised, and I can see with your starts that I probably have about 50 seeds in one section- they are coming up so slowly and have not yet sprouted. Could I still separate them and hope for some sprouts? They are such tiny seeds.
Yarrow does have tiny seeds. You can separate the sprouts but wait until they are a couple weeks old. The young roots are tender, so be careful when you pull them apart.
How many different colors are there of yaro I just have a white.
The main colors are red,pink yellow,orange and white. But there are many shades of each color.
Can yarrow be grown in hydroponics ?
Good question. I haven't ever tried it, but I don't see why it wouldn't grow.
Has anyone tried to start indoors under lights like people do with vegetables like tomatoes and peppers. I am going to try to grow some. but I think i am going to put more in pots per they are a clumping plant and not hard to separate. One more note is the plants of different color will some times change to the stronger color. Had yellow one year next red LOL Better if you have the colors away form each other not sure how far though Thanks for the great video !!!!
Yes you can start them under grow lights. I have had some change colors also ( Of course I have only had this happen on hybrid varieties). I am not sure what distance you would need to keep them apart so they don't cross pollenate. I have several colors that are within a few feet of each other and the seeds I have saved from them have still been true to their parent plant color Thanks for watching.
I started some of the fruitbowl variety from baker creek a couple of weeks ago. I was surprised to see how fast they germinated with light. I might have waited a couple more weeks if I had known they would germinate so fast. I have a large rabbit population in my garden. I am hoping placing this strategically around it I might be able to keep them out of my garden beds. Also curious does the newer varieties have the same clotting properties as the original variety?
The depth of color on these can vary based off age of each bloom. So a pink plant can have pale pink to almost white blooms on them as well as brighter colors.
@@Enchanted_Daisy Yes they germinate very fast. I love that about them. I will have to order some of the fruit bowl variety from baker creek. Yes the new varieties have the same properties as the old. I try not to get into the medicinal properties of plants on here because of legal reasons but they are basically the same plants. Hi, what kind of soil do you use for seed planting? Is it a seed starting mixture, or just potting soil?
Hi Lori, It is 3 parts promix and 1 part compost. Seedling roots are very tender so you don't want much nitrogen in your mix. Thanks for the question.
Thank you! I made my 1st mistake by covering the seeds with potting soil! I bought seeds for pink, hot pink and purple flowers. Can I encourage a deeper pink and purple by adding coffee grounds in the soil? Or is that just for hydrangeas?
I have seen hybrid yarrow change colors but I don't know if it was because of the ph. You might try it and see what happens. From what I have seen when they changed colors it was to white or a pale color of what they were originally. Let me know what happens. I might take a couple of plants and try it myself. sounds like a good experiment.

Is yarrow spreading by roots or by seeds?
Mostly by seed. It will spread some from the main plant though.
Can you harvest seeds from your existing yarrow flowers?
Chloe , yes you can. I harvest mine every year. You can get hundreds of seeds from just one bloom cluster. Just wait for the blooms to turn brown and dry, then take scissors and cut off the bloom and put it in a paper bag to finish drying.

Do yarrow seeds need a month of cold to germinate? I’ve read that in a couple of places.
Yes yarrow seeds benefit from cold stratification. You will get better germination rates, with that being said I still get good germination rates (60 to 70 percent) when I don't cold stratify them. Great question thanks for asking.

Annette, Thank you so much for your kind words. My wife and I have been married 33 years. Yarrow is so easy to grow once you get it to sprout. Just mist your seeds every day or a couple of times a day and it will sprout and take off growing.
How do you protect those seeds from a heavy rain? You bring them in?
Such a stupid easy tip it is to open the seed packets from the bottom, but I never do that. 🤦♀️. I will now.

My yarrow sprouted quite quickly and then just stopped growing. It’s been about 3 weeks now, they’re are still alive and look fine, just haven’t grown at all? Any ideas?
Hi dmplus2k, Do your have your yarrow in pots or in the ground? If they are in pots go ahead and plant them in the ground. If they are in the ground then give them some nitrogen and they should start growing. Also if they are in the ground they could just be building roots to get ready for winter.This time of year yarrow grows very slow above ground because they are building roots for winter.
