Is your Microwave tripping the breaker?

    Our microwave started tripping the breaker, so it's time to search for the wiring diagram and dig a little deeper into the problem.
    First, locate your model number. It's normally on the inside of the unit. You can find it on the bottom left after opening the door. That model number will allow you to search for the part that I show in the video, but specific to your model of microwave. You can also use this number to find the wiring diagram if you need a temporary-ish repair to avoid the issue of creating a dead short and tripping the breaker every time you pull on the door.
    Ideally, after you make this repair, remember to either press STOP before opening the door or wait for the microwave to time out.
    Thank you for watching.

      Hey, @otgcanada
      Yeah, it has less to do with opening the door while it's running and more to do with natural wear of the latch itself and the placement of the monitor switch versus the other 2 switches. Once the latch gets worne a little, just the natural vibration of the microwave can be enough to disconnect the monitor switch during operation causing it to trip the breaker.

    I have the same problem but my house runs on a 4000 watt pure sine wave inverter . Some thing about the microwave oven that is brand new , that when it starts it trips the inverter . and the entire house goes down . I have cooked entire meals using my air fry toaster oven ( 1800 watts ) , hot plate ( 1000 watts ) , AC on low ( 580 watts ) , fridge ( 120 watts ) , freezer ( 120 watts ) , and the rest of the house that totaled 3375 watts all at the same time with no issues . It is just something about the start on the microwave that causes the inverter to trip and the rated watts for the microwave is only 1350 watts . So... the cure to this was to simply turn the power down on the microwave to 6 instead on 10 and it runs just fine . My oven is a Master Chef . I have even plugged the microwave strait into the inverter with nothing else plugged in and same thing . Hope this helps if you have the same problem .

    • @thelarewsdo
      @thelarewsdo  6 місяців тому

      Hey,
      You're welcome. The hum could possibly mean that one of the other switches may be "welded" closed due to the previous issue. The other switches can be removed and carefully opened to verify if they are stuck or not. The side splits off revealing the internals. Sometimes if you're lucky a little coaxing can unstick the switch tips. Once they are unstuck put them back in and see if that resolves the hum.

I used a small flathead and separated them. Put everything back together and connected the middle switch this time, and now everything works great! Can't imagine how many people would have bought a new microwave. Thanks again! There's another video that shows the guy opening the switches and showing you the difference between one welded together and not.

  • @John-xu5rr

    I worked at this for a while trying to adjust the switches and replace the switches, and replace the plastic switch holders. After looking at the schematic for my Kenmore, what I did was replace the upper microswitch with an Omron SPDT switch where I could connect to the normally closed terminal (was clipped off on the factory switch). The microswitches are the Omron D3V "Miniature Basic Switch" for reference. On the upper switch, the factory wiring connects the normally open terminal to input AC Power, and the common connection connects to the magnetron already. What I did that was the modification was to connect the previously unconnected terminal from the upper switch to the connector for the lower magnetron discharge switch, on the leg not connected to the magnetron. The lower magnetron discharge microswitch is now not connected. So basically what I did was to use the upper switch for both functions required when the door opens (cut power and discharge the magnetron). The magnetron is (already) connected to the common terminal on the upper switch, and was already connected to power on the normally open terminal. I just connected the normally closed terminal to execute the same function that the lower magnetron discharge switch did. Same functionality, but now just on one switch rather than attempting to synchronize 2 separate mechanical switches to achieve the same functionality. I made the new connection by making a male to female spade lug jumper cable, so didn't have to cut any factory wires. Works great. No more breaker tripping and the unit turns off and grounds the magnetron when the door is opened while operating.

    • @thelarewsdo
      @thelarewsdo  8 місяців тому

      Hey! Good thinking! That solves both issues. No more microswitch that nuisance trips due to poor location; all while maintaining full functionality. I like that a alot. Switch selection is key... my monitor switch is a normally open and the other two are normally closed, so one wouldn't want to mix that up. The SPDT would work in my situation also. (D3V-16G-1C25-K) Again good thinking!

      If your issue is fixed by unhooking the monitor switch, like in our video, then the next video will show you. We'll be upgrading a switch. But to answer your question, the door latch that holds the three switches is normally what is worn and is causing the monitor switch to malfunction.

      Hey! Sounds like a plan! If you hooked all the switches back up after replacing them the issue could still be the bracket that holds them. Remember, the wear on the bracket is what causes the monitor switch to close when it's not supposed to and that's what trips the breaker.

    On the key pad there is a PAUSE button....that is there for a reason. You do not pause a microwave by opening the door while it is running. Hit pause to STOP the power to the switches THEN open the door and then you don't care which switch opens or closes...there is no power to them AND you don't care where you grab the handle to open it. NO more problems with that middle pad switch getting the contacts burnt.

    • @thelarewsdo
      @thelarewsdo  9 місяців тому

      Hey! Thank you!
      I'm sure that 98% of people that view this video realize that. But, over the course of owning a microwave there are extenuating circumstances or "late for work instances" where protocol isn't followed to the 'T'. The summation of these instances is what causes the issue. Life happens.
      P.S. Pressing the pause button just opens a set of contacts, under load, that stops the microwave; no different than opening the door.
      Have a wonderful day and thank you for watching.

    • @outboardfixer
      @outboardfixer 9 місяців тому

      @@thelarewsdo PS...no it don't and why the big Shabelle about following things to a T if it don't matter? Why is pause on the key pad?? I fix them ALL the time and NO ONE uses pause.....or the ones burning the contacts together in that switch don't.

    • @thelarewsdo
      @thelarewsdo  9 місяців тому

      I don't disagree that pressing the pause button would aid in decreasing the particular issue people are having and is good practice. Though, ultimately, by using the microwave daily over many years the latch naturally will continue to wear and the issue with the monitor switch prematurely closing becomes inevitable. I didn't exactly understand what you were getting at with your retort about following protocol to a T, but I think I can answer your question with a question. Why doesn't everyone drive exactly the speed limit or only press the elevator button once...
      And relays are simply actuated switches. So yes, when you press the pause button you are dropping out power to the coil on the relay which disconnects power under load from the magnetron, vent fan....
      Best wishes. Keep on repairing and be safe.

    Yes! If I have the microwave and air fryer on at once the breaker gets tripped and shuts everything off in the kitchen! Also,I hear popping and crackling from the breaker box when the microwave is on.🙄🙄😞😞

    • @thelarewsdo
      @thelarewsdo  Рік тому +4

      Hey,
      The breaker is getting overloaded. Your kitchen breaker is probably a 20 amp breaker. The microwave pulls ~12 amps and the air frier pulls ~12 amps so combined your are at 24+ amps; That's why it's tripping. You may want to check if the outlets on your counter are on different breakers and move your air frier to a different location. The popping and cracking in the breaker box means the screw holding the wire into the breaker is loose and needs tightened; this needs addressed asap. The popping and cracking is arcing which can lead to a fire. It's a super easy fix, BUT requires knowledge of electricity to safely fix it.
      Hope this helps answer your questions. Thank you for watching.

    • @thelarewsdo
      @thelarewsdo  Рік тому +1

      Hey Dimitri,
      Interesting idea, but I have a few thoughts.
      10 gauge wire is a bear to work with as far as bending and "squishing" into single outlet boxes. Plus, I'm not to sure that most 15/20 amp outlets are designed to adequately secure 10 gauge wire behind the terminals. If you breaker panel is large enough, one thought would be to home run each of your kitchen outlets with 12 gauge wire. This will give you 20 amps available at each outlet, it isolates the appliances and the wire is easier to work with.
      Hope this helps. Have a wonderful day and thank you for watching.

      Hey,
      You're welcome! Since that is one of 3 safeties, you should be fine; there are still two safeties still in the circuit. Now, if you were wanting to put it back to 100%, remember it's not the switch that is causing the real issue. The wear on the latch is what is causing the switch to activate when it shouldn't, so you'd have to replace the latch.

      Hey!
      Great to hear! We've been using ours, how you saw it in the video, since we made the video. We actually have a nifty, permanent, better than factory fix that hopefully 🤞 I'll get installed and videoed with in the next week.
      Thank you for watching and supporting the channel.

      Lol I've had the part for 6 months. But the upgrade has been moved to the long list. The fall is "slower" for us so I hope to have an evening or two to video the upgrade and upload it.
      Thanks for reminding me! Click the bell to be notified of our future videos; this will probably be our next one. 😀

      @@thelarewsdo My man! For now I bypassed the monitor switch and it appears to work just fine without blowing the fuse. It stops the microwave when I open the door mid operation. However, lamp no longer works - is this normal? I checked the switches and the conifiguration is top (NC), middle (NO - this is the one i disconnected), bottom (NO). Do you think this could be a safety issue?

      Hey,
      If memory serves me the monitor grounds the magnetron or something of that nature.( actively discharging the circuit) I don't see it as a safty concern, unless your everyday practice is to pull the door open before the microwave stops or without pressing stop. Is there any chance the light is a seperate issue? Bulb burnt out or you didn't get one of the plugs seated on the circuit board?

    Great video, much appreciated. Question. Your saying that your circuit breaker gets popped when this issue happens. Wouldn't the fuse blow first? I have went through 5 fuses in last 8 months and I finally (duh) decided to dig into the root cause. I saw your video and just replaced all three door switches. Fingers crossed. If it happens again, I will disconnect the monitor switch as you suggested. If that doesn't do.......I'm done! LOL. Thanks again for your video help.

      Hey,
      You're welcome and thank you!
      The fuse is protecting the control circuit, but the monitor issue is on the power side; That's why it blows the breaker.
      Let me know how it goes.

      @@thelarewsdo Hi again. Well dangit!! After 10 days the fuse blew again. Do you think by unpluging the monitor switch (which was popping your circuit breaker) this might finally solve my fuse blowing issue? Many thanks again!

      Hey,
      At this point, you wouldn't be out of anything to give it a try. What style and amperage of fuse are you using? (slow blow or fast blow style fuse)

    • @teddysmith1952
      @teddysmith1952 5 місяців тому

      @@thelarewsdo I'm not sure what the fuse type is called. It's a 20Amp glass with a solid metal strip.

    Thank you very much. It worked but now the issue is whenever I am opening the door the fan starts running. I am afraid that is it just a fan or it starts cooking even when the door is open. Please provide your input asap.

      Hey,
      Check back through previous comments, this is kind of a common issue also. I'd say one of your other switches is welded together and is stuck in the "on" position.
      The switches can be carefully split apart and unwelded, assuming they're not too damaged, or they can be replaced by purchasing them on Amazon or digi key.

      In the video around the 3:05 min. mark I mention interlock switches. Those are the other two of the 3 switches.
