@@timwilson3150 dude, he even says in the video that “you don’t have to take the driveshaft off. I just did it so it’s easier to see”

I know it is 4 years later, but I have to thank you for the detailed video. Those little buggers are really tough to get in straight. First one I got in and did not realize it was in too far. Start over LOL. Second one was 90 percent and I got it in the rest of the way with the lever arm. Nice and tight now. I had noticed that the lever was moving around a bit when I was towing. Seems super tight now. Bushings were in for 8 years from new when I had the transfer case installed.

What a master mechanic. You could swear that the second bushing went in almost as if off camera.
On a real note much appreciated for the video, my bushing just dry rotted out a couple days ago and I was curious if I could do it in 4 ft of snow

Thank you so much!!! You answered all my questions I had about my 2005 Ram 2500. I was like, where is the clip and why is this hole so big, lol! It was a strange feeling to grab the transfer case shifter and feel it flop. My first thought was, this feels expensive, haha!

Tunerdude, Thank you for posting this video. Two weeks ago I was driving my 2005 Power Wagon (Bought new in 2005, original owner and love it) and heard what sounded like a bolt hiting the ground beneath my truck. I thought I just kicked up somethig from the street and didn't give it any more thought. I pulled into my destination and noticed my transfer case selector lever moving freely. I grabbed the lever and it was as limp as a cooked noodle. As I am recovering from an idustrial accident I can't climb under my truck to investigate the problem. I'm certain beyond any doubt that what happened to your truck also befell mine. Now I can take it in for repair and know ahead of time what needs to be done. I wonder who the genius was who decided that a "C" clip wouldn't be necessary? Thank you again.

Last week roads in Wyoming and Montana were dry, then icy and snowy. Shifting in/out of 4wd high. Then the shifter goes free. Luckily I was in 4wd. Made it home to Idaho, looked at the FSM and hit the dealer in the morning. Other than the cost of the grommet being $20, it was a quick and easy fix. Dealer joked that they valued those parts dearly, hence the cost. Luckily in my case the linkage bar didn't fall off, it just hung from the rear grommet. The original rubber was worn and broken. I bought a second grommet to replace the worn rear one as well.

I struggled with this on my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 for over an hour. Finally, I defied logic and started with the flat side of the bushing and used a flat screwdriver to force it into to hole. Got both done within 5 minutes that way!
Channel Locks didn’t work, hose clamp didn’t work.

Bend a piece of 1/4-20 all-thread and extend the leads slightly to allow for dual side tightening washer and nuts. Thread lock when applied and it’ll never come off again. Stoopid rubber grommets.

If I could give a 1000 thumbs up, I would. As a 55 year old woman, my hand strength isn't what it used to be. There was NO squeezing a channel locks to insert this bushing cold. Also, if you see the other video online where the dude pushed the bushing onto the linkage arm first and then pressed it into the transfer case lever hole , DO NOT DO THIS. If you see the dude who suggested this, please slap him senseless for me. I have one slightly damaged bushing inserted after boiling it and am ordering 2 more as I know the one I installed tonight will not last too long. (damaged when trying to pull it off the linkage arm since it was not in the transfer case lever). Kudos Thomas English!!!!

Remember to put the rubber bushing in the hole, THEN put the rod into the bushing. If you do it in reverse order, it will be difficult to get the bushing all the way into the hole.

The real fix is to get a piece of brass the same outside diameter as the rubber busing and stick it in a lathe and drill it out to fit the linkage. the trick here is to get linkage to go all the way through the new brass busing so you can put a washer and cotter pin through it. that's the old way to fix this problem so it never happens again. That's what I'm going to do.
