- Removing and and replacing a transfer case on a 2005 Dodge Ram 1500. My truck felt like it went into neutral all of a sudden while driving down the road. After working with it, I was finally able to get it to go into 4x4 low and made it home. 4x4 low is the only gear it would go with in and I also noticed they it would pop very loud when I was in 4x4 before this happened to me. I would recommend checking your transfer case for fluid if you suspect this is your problem. I got the part from a local used parts place for $250 and installed it myself. According to google, the average price to replace a transfer case is around $2600. I tried to be thorough in this removal and install so that someone else may be able to watch this if they have the same problem potentially save themselves hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Thanks for watching, be safe and God bless!
It never ceases to amaze me how auto manufacturers love to cut corners by cheaping out: both the differentials and transmission are made out of cast iron but yet the transfer case, which is also a vital component of the drivetrain, is only made out of aluminum which is easily susceptible to cracks.
Aluminum dissipates heat better and is lighter. With it being much smaller than the transmission, and not having nearly as much force as a differential or being the lowest point of clearance (rocks or road debris), it makes sense to have it aluminum. Mainly because of the heat from 4wd.
Out of all videos, yours explained and helped the most. Appreciate the details, saved me a lot of stress n struggle.
Thank you very much! I am very happy to hear that it was of help to you 🤝
Thank you for the help and the video was excellent I got my transfer case out and you saved me $800 in labor
I’m very glad to hear it was of help to you. Thank the Lord for that. You’re very welcome!
Good job. Yes, the shafts are Ballenced. No, they are not ballenced to the transmission and/or the rear end. If it was. Then, replacing the U-JOINT. Would change the ballence. If you would like to mark them. By all means, it's your truck. Go for it. I enjoyed the video. You have some great content. Thank you.
Thank you very much my friend! I appreciate the kind words.
Good job!! Definitely the handy man so to say. Wood, landscaping, lawns, arch ways, etc.. and mechanics too ☆☆☆☆☆
Thank you very much my little wife lol!
Your welcome ♡
Best video I’ve seen on this brother , but get some safety glasses 😂
Good advice 👍 thank you for the comment!
This was a great video. Thanks for the refresher on this diy
You’re very welcome Travis! I hope it is a help to someone in some way or another. Thanks for the comment and God bless, my friend.
Appreciate the details of your video it'll sure help me out today
You’re very welcome my friend! I’m glad to hear that it helps. I hope you get your problem fixed. We need our trucks!
Bolts with Lock-tite, Heat the bolt up with a propane torch to soften the lock-tite and they come out no problem
Getting ready to do the same on my 2005 ram 1500 lost chain in mine it would try and turn the front chaft but it would just jump like chain is jumping gears
My truck is caked with dirt like that. I use my air hose to get most of it off before attempting to do anything.
Awesome thank you
You are very correct Peter! A lift would have made it much easier. This job lasted a lot longer than I intended for it too but I saved a lot of money. I think the average price to repair a transfer case is around $2600 according to google lol. Thanks for watching Peter and take care!
@@bluegrassoutdoors Yes that saves money.
My father had an auto repair shop and a junkyard. So I know about it. But that was a long time ago now.
I'm actually a trained car painter.
Now work in a factory, painting parts there.
Sometimes I have to fix things on my cars. But don't do everything anymore.
I only make firewood for myself.
Take care....
Greetings Peter
I respect our factory workers! I have worked in many of them. Some of them are very hard work and some are enjoyable as well. And it’s a huge part of what supplies our country and others. Thanks for your hard work my friend and for taking the time to comment! Always good to hear from you Peter.
I really don't enjoy mechanic work, but do it out of necessity. My oldest brother is far better. I claim to be a semi pro after my last bought replacing transmission oil cooler lines lol. Good job.
I know what you mean! I don’t like being in those tight spaces under a vehicle for very long myself. I enjoy mechanics to a certain point but feel claustrophobic if I’m under there for awhile lol. And for some reason,
something always seems to go wrong or be a lot harder than I assumed with mechanics. Bolts stripping, breaking, parts breaking, not having the special tool needed, etc. It can definitely be a bit stressful at times lol. I have saved myself thousands by doing it though and I have a hard time trusting some mechanics after some experiences I’ve had in the past. Semi pro, I like that! I ask my wife if she’s proud of me sometimes after doing a repair lol. Thank you for watching my friend and keep up the great work on the homestead and with your all’s channel!
The drive shaft is balanced in the same manner as a wheel is balanced, you do not need to put the wheel back on the car in the position it came off
who said anything about putting the wheel back in the same position?
My 02 dodge has 3 bolts on the crossmember. The transmission mount, doesn't have to be unboted
Till after the crossmember is removed.
The transmission dropped down, after I gave the crossmember a wack on it,so I had to push it back up with a floor jack, as the crossmember hadn't dropped out completely .
This crossmember holds up to the whole transmission. You need to put a jack under it so it doesn't fall out completely and damage any engine parts!
The electric plug on top of the transfer case,is it a push clip to undo it?or just a wiggle off.
The oil in a transfer case might be just good old fashion gear lube!
The transmission won’t fall out unless you take all of the bolts out of it that connect it to the engine. It has a shaft connecting it to the engine which won’t allow it to fall, along with the transmission bolts. I have had the crossmember out many times. I would go with what it calls for as far as transfer case fluid goes. If you buy the wrong thing it may be too thin/thick and not made for that particular temperature and that’s a big risk to take for such a big job. It does have a clip that you pull up on to release the electrical connectors on top of the transmission.
Turn your channel locks around! They are great if you know how they work. Lol
Is this the Ron I'm thinking of? Lol
I saw that to wasn't sure, rightie tightie, leftie looseie, flip handle. Lol
Do you have to put your truck into neutral when changing transfer case?
I don’t believe that I did. You can manually change it by hand though, on the transfer case itself. I don’t think that it matters.
@ ok thanks for the information!
You’re very welcome 👍
2.43 quarts for transfer case
Dont stick finger in hole! Gets stuck, use a small stick to see if theres gear lube,in transfer cases.
You paid a lot for your, transfer case, way too much!
Also, the chiltons manual, suggesys the flat rate to remove & replace this part.
I was quoted 4 hours@ 90$ an hour up here in Canada, and i am a retired mechanic thougt thst was 2 hours too much!
I have always used my finger but I could definitely see how it could get stuck. A new transfer case for that truck is nearly $1700 at oreilys. For a good mechanic I would think 4 hours is too much also.

@@davidrussell8795 I’m always hesitant to go to mechanics period, because I know how some of them are. And I like to fix it myself as well if I’m able, or do my best to learn how to if not. It seems like some mechanics really like to take advantage of women and charge them way too much for certain things. There are some out there who are great and professional as well though. I definitely understand why people choose to use mechanics, I’m just really wary about it myself. Yeah, that sounds like a sketchy place for sure from what you’ve said. I’d avoid that place as well from now on if I was her. It’s good you were able to figure it out and get it fixed for her though. I would think she is very thankful for that.
You guys are paying way too much at your local autowreckers! Try shopping up here,in Canada, I paid 400$ for my transfer case, they did ask 500$ but im a senior so i asked for a discount!
I asked about the mileage, got 1 with low kilometres, 160 ,u dont want one with high mileage unless you need it to do a rebuild if uours is trashed!
My 02 has fibreglass skid plates, does yours,if not is that an option ,when newly purchased?
Our local shop wanted 4 hours@ 90$! But on a hoist ,this isan ez 2 hour job.
What shop is charging u 2500 to repair this?
Ever heard of WD-40? This truck is lower than mine, why not use ramps to get some room to work
Thanks for watching
WD-40 is an acid and deisel or kerosene mix,it does dissolve the rust on bolts, but it used to seize them up tight after 15 minutes! Then I had found out I had to apply it again, and it's worse if u don't break your bolts free ,works to seize up bolts!
Farmers used battery acid to prevent bolts from coming loose on there old wooden trailers.
Once applied, it's never coming off without a cutting torch!
I used some on my crossmember bolts, left it overnight, maybe they changed the formula but Liquid wrench is better, has no acid in it.
An old farmer told me a 50/50 mix of deisel fuel and iodide(iodine?) Will un seize rings in his old cickshutt tractor and bolts as well!
