9 years of playing the violin and i still need to work on these things! thank you for helping violinists such as myself practice their skills in a useful way :)
Omg thank you for writing this, I thought I sucked at violin because I still struggle with that, but you're reassuring me a lot!! I had several teachers but they never really learned me the posture I had to take to play correctly so now I try learning it by myself but it's so hard!
Just learning on my own now... but have noticed that beautiful hands of violin players and wanted to know how to get to that in a little bit this is a wonderful video! I am learning old time fiddle Tunes not classical but still need to achieve many of the same skills. I'm already 70 so I don't know how far I'll get, I just want to play the lovely Tunes!
Great video; good instruction! Thank you!. I am doing these exercises with beginners and second year students in school setting. Beginners tend to loose the shape of their bow hand with doing these exercises. i let them do 4 repeats and then reset the bow hold.
This is golden. I have been a lifetime guitar player and bowed instruments have been a mystery for the longest time despite my sincere interest. I am beginning to see the light with this video. Thank you Ma'am, you are a great teacher! Have a wonderful day!
Same, also guitar player learning the violin. All I'm learning is to not use any force anywhere at all...a guitar is so much more forgiving then a violin!
as a student who hasn't gone to music school I'll be enrolled next year this is very helpful to give me one of the informations you have to know sa a violinist. thank you this video helped me learn and other fellow musicians around the world!
Hey Violin Lab, I really do appreciate these exercises thank you so much! I have a question, do we also need to bend the thumb while bending all the other fingers?
00:14 - Hold the middle of the bow with your left hand. Lift the frog up and down with the pads of the middle two fingers 00:29 - Add the index and 4th fingers. Keep the 4th finger on top of the stick. 00:42 - Add the thumb. Try to maintain contact point with the first finger. All base knuckles should be flexing. 00:57 - Push and pull against the resistance of your left hand which is keeping the bow fixed in place. Feel the fingers lengthen on the up, and curl and bend on the down. This is called ‘Finger Motion’ 01:22 - Stick your index finger through the end of your bow, so it can slide back and forth. 01:27 - From the fingers only, lift the bow up and down. 01:48 - The hardest part: use finger motion to make the bow move left to right. 01:59 - The bow should slide back and forth around the index finger. 02:05 - This is the collé bow stroke! This is quicker and more jerky than the regular finger motion movement. 02:20 - Do the same exercises with the violin to support the bow. 02:35 - Bring the bow to the frog and pivot the bow from one string to the next. 03:00 - Do the collé bow stroke, using only the fingers to move the bow. 03:30 - Hold the bow vertically and let it fall to the strings, making a single bounce. The whole action should start and end in the neutral vertical position. 04:00 - Hold the bow in place with your left hand. Push and pull, creating down and up bow movements, This is the finger movement. 04:30 - Finally, finger motion as the frog on long bow strokes! 04:45 - The fingers bend at the exact moment that the bow changes to a down bow.
Started taking lessons and I guess my bow hold isnt good enough, and since the teacher doing my lessons is offering my lessons to me for free, I dont want to be a waste of his time, so im practicing really hard each week!
I'm studying violin around four months and I still have a great difficulty in how to hold the bow. This video is helping me a lot.Thank you for put this in portuguese too. We've a great difficulty to find good violin's material in our language.
Great exercise ever as a beginner it helps me a lot to improve my bowing. I have learnt vibrato from your video. And the background music Canon fits this exercise 👌👌
I'm a beginner... Got my Violin 2-3 months ago but only learned how to hold the bow and finger positions for scales... Now that my school exams are over I'm gonna learn as much as possible This video is really helpful... I still have some questions The finger motion movements at last part... I cannot tell if the curving or stretching of finger is from base knuckle or middle knuckle, also, like we change our finger right before down bow, do we do the same for up bow too ? I tried to do the finger motion with my middle knuckle and my wrist gets tensed... is it possible to tell where exactly I'm doing wrong ? My question may sound stupid and Eng isn't my first language either so I hope I could convey in a clear way 😅 I don't have any teacher and I'm determined to learn playing violin... I'd be grateful for your help 🙇🙇 thank you very much !!
I am currently working on that.. I will start with vibrato when my left hand losens up (my teacher knows exactly how to put carrots on front of my nose..) but honestly.. It's a bit painful and need to make breaks after like 2 mins.. But I will grab my bow in a couple of minutes again and practise practise practise. Of yourself with breaks to relax the muscles.. She said sth really nice last lesson, violine is such an uncomfortable instrument to play.. And I added, and while it is uncomfortable to play it sounds so beautiful
My thumb and pinky finger placement are hard to correct. I have long fingers. Could this be why? I cannot keep my pinky curved and I injured my thumb from supporting the full weight of the bow on one point. I'm still numb 6 days later. I don't want more damage.
I dont know if it's just me having a problem with my pink's joint snapping. So when I do the exercise, I cant do it smoothly. I hope it's normal and trainable.
The thumb always follows the movement of the other fingers. If they bend the thumb bends and if they get straight the thumb also gets (not totally sticky-straight more like straighter with a slight bend left)
I've been struggling greatly with the first finger becoming too sharp and moving forward whenever i do exercises involving the fourth finger. The fourth finger causes the first finger to move forward, slide and become sharper. I've tried everything and don't know what to do, can anyone help ?
Guys I’m really frustrated, in fact almost depressed that I can get this and I need this a lot Can someone take me on private lesson I’m willing to pay for this Just this
Hello. Thank you so much for these exercises, they're really helpful for a beginner like myself. I'd like to ask: when all the fingers are on the bow moving up and down, should the thumb remain round and fixed in place or does it move along with the others? Thanks (and sorry if it is a dumb question).
The thumb moves along with the fingers. If the fingers bend so the thumbs does and if they get straight the thumb gets straight too but with a tiny bend left

I've done these as part of my warm up for like 20 years... these are the BEST way to get those lil fingers moving right
Great video; good instruction! Thank you!. I am doing these exercises with beginners and second year students in school setting. Beginners tend to loose the shape of their bow hand with doing these exercises. i let them do 4 repeats and then reset the bow hold.
It is a long journey to learn violin. ^^
betul. itu terjadi padaku. dan sangat melelahkan. matur suksma
Yes..
You should just say it's a long journey to learn anything... Even toothbrushing😋
This channel is exactly what i was looking for over several years! Thank you!
Excellent exercises. This showed me some of the missing links in my bow hold education

Thank you for this i have a hard time keeping my thumb curled and my wrist loose. This shows the wrist position so well and how important it is.

I am so glad I looked back in your videos. This was just what I needed. Thank you!
After 8 years plays violin i think violin is the hardest musical instrument

Amazing video, very useful to a bow exercise session. And very smart combination with such a gentle soundtrack as Pachelbel. :)

You are a great teacher thanks .
Great exercises! And such a relaxing video!
How long should this take to learn?
Make this video downloadable please

I would recommend stretching and muscle building to make your body stronger. It will help so much to build stamina for holding the violin.
@@violinlab I do that. But push ups and pull ups are not necessarily the right kind of movement for those tiny movements in the fingers.
How are you making this without movement of little finger?
Thank you!❤
Great lesson!
Awesome thanks
Very helpful thanks so much for sharing!!!
Thanks
Please what song did you use for this video. I really love it and would love to have it too.
Great video anyways.
Moses Amah Pretty sure it’s Canon in D
Yea it is Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel
Thanks.
Very good presentation!
Gracias 😀😀😀 Maestra
Great video !!!!
Should I put my arm on the table while doing all these exercises?
My thumb and pinky finger placement are hard to correct. I have long fingers. Could this be why? I cannot keep my pinky curved and I injured my thumb from supporting the full weight of the bow on one point. I'm still numb 6 days later. I don't want more damage.

should i always keep my thumb bended while all my other fingers are moving?

I've been struggling greatly with the first finger becoming too sharp and moving forward whenever i do exercises involving the fourth finger. The fourth finger causes the first finger to move forward, slide and become sharper. I've tried everything and don't know what to do, can anyone help ?

it is impossible to do these after 20 years old. It is needed to start the violin in early ages.
Excuses xd
