Its about Gustav II Adolf, King of Sweden 1611-1632 and the king who turned Sweden into a great superpower during the 30 year long european war. The Swedish army (king) was called the lion from the north.

Sabaton fulfills not one but two niches for me: epic power metal at it's finest and a glimpse into history that makes me want to learn more and do more research. Excellent song! This band never disappoints! Looking at the size of the crowds at their concerts just blows me away. Sweden is near and dear to my heart and as such the history that this band presents endears them to me. Last summer we were hearing the story of Gustav II Adolf in the Kalmar Castle in Kalmar, Sweden and about his daughter, Christina, who became the ruler of Sweden who turned the Monarchy absolutely upside down and then abdicated and fled to Rome. It was a fascinating story!
I read about Gustav II but not his daughter. Sounds like I need to check out her story as well! Thank you, Mossy!

Listening to Sabaton is also learning about History! Some people say that Power Metal sounds kitsch and cringey, I beg to differ!
This song comes from the "Carolus Rex" album, which describes the history of Sweden in the XVIIth Century. It was an Empire back then, a superpower having control over large chunks of Northern Europe and its strategic & commercial harbours. But everything eventually comes to an end and Sweden was given a deadly blow by russian Tsar Peter the Great at the battle of Poltava (Ukraine) in 1709. Sweden never recovered from this defeat.
King Gustavus II Adolphus was one of the warrior kings of Sweden, founder of its empire, he is considered as one of the greatest strategists of History, some of his victorious battles are still studied in military academies today. He was killed leading his troops to battle in 1632.
As a lover of history, I greatly appreciate what Sabaton brings. They make me look up the history and dig deeper. That brings more questions so I dig deeper still. I like to connect the dots because it leads to a better understanding of the world today. Those people that say power metal is cringey, I have a few choice words for them!
