    My very first classic DVD was 'Earthshock'. I was a fledgling fan having jumped on board halfway through series 2 in 2006. When I discovered later that this programme wasn't the original version and that its first run dated all the way back to the 60s, I found it very exciting. I was particularly intrigued by all the pictures of the old Cybermen so it's no surprise that when we first went out shopping and I saw several classic DVDs on the shelf, I was especially drawn to the large image of the Cyber Leader on the cover. Never looked back. I've since gone on to have a near complete set of DVDs (I've even added my own customs to fill in the gaps for the missing stories), all I'm missing now is 'The Krotons'. Not the most exciting or fitting way to end, I know, but what a journey it's been!

      Earthshocks a great way to kick it all off! I’m also thinking of picking up those custom covers available on ebay:) I see we both have a huge nostalgia for these dvds! The only official release I’m actually missing now is the faceless ones! Thank you for watching! :)

    I still have all of the available BBC videos! Love them! My first DVD was The Five Doctors, as soon as that came out I went and bought it. I have bought each one religiously as soon as they came out, including the new series ones. I love the DVDs, love the quality, but I am absolutely loving these new Blu-Ray box sets. Incredible stuff. I collected the VHS as a kid. When I joined the Royal Marines and was in training I bought a portable DVD player. Genesis of the Daleks was the first DVD I bought in a head dvd shop in Exeter on weekend leave. My collection grew from there. I remember they were sometimes so expensive. I had a case full of Doctor who DVDs that got me through 2 tours of Afghanistan. I remember coming of a pretty hairy night patrol and watching Genesis of the Daleks before falling asleep just as Sarah Jane fell off the rocket tower and watching the planet of evil lying on a cot bed in 50 degree heat.
    Lost a lot of the sleeves but have a decent collection saved up. My favourite artwork is the special edition Remembrance of the Daleks and one of my all time favourite story’s. The DVD were a big part of my life.

    The music fit so well with your voice! my first DVD was Spearhead From Space the original bland cover I got back in 2009 and I still have it to this day, The Blu-Ray sets will probably have almost all the special features we got on DVD including new ones but I know at least one feature will not be present, and thats A Fix With Sontarans on Season 22, its obvious why but it does mean The Two Doctors DVD has some worth, the original release that is.

    Amazing video. I remember recently someone who watched my videos said they wanted to get into classic who, and wanted to get the season 12 blu ray from eBay. I advised them not to due to the scalpers, and that to watch the stories, the DVDs are your best bet. My first classic DVD was quite fittingly, the beginnings boxset. My first one was Revelation of the Daleks or Earthshock, I got them both for my birthday sometime around 2006, I then got the Unearthly Child set for Xmas and was convinced that they would be in colour becuase we had a colour TV. My 9 year old self got laughed at pretty hard by the older memebers of my family for saying that!

  • @thespoon94
    @thespoon94 Рік тому

    Agreed dear sir, my collection is highly prized and hold cherished memories as such, I was lucky that I received 3 for my birthday in 2004; The Leisure Hive, The Five Doctors and the Lost in Time boxset. Having only seen very few stories before on satellite tv early mornings and late nights this was an absolute treasure trove of a deep dive, especially the Lost in Time boxset, I would say it’s one of my most prized possessions and a key reason why 1960s Dr Who is the absolute pinnacle of the shows history for me and why I’ve seen every (visually existing and including animations) episode from An Unearthly Child to The War Games what seems like 1000 times each at least and I will gladly watch another few thousand more!
    One of my biggest regrets however is trading in certain DVD’s on the crest of the wave of part exchanges and sales in entertainment shops and I’d often go with games or dvds with a little money too and trade things in for other things I wanted or was new out (more often than not brand new Dr Who DVD releases) and I had a limited edition Key To Time boxset from its original release which was limited to 10000 if I remember rightly as it opened up strangely but was a beauty! This was probably getting on for 15 years ago I got rid and barely a day goes by I don’t kick myself up the arse for it!

    A bit late to this, but grrat video. I started getting the classic DVDs around 2006, but I've been pondering the box sets, but stuck with the single story releases as I already had so many. Really glad they are still being released. The big question though is what will happen now Disney is in control of distribution and is canning physical releases in many countries such as Australia?

      I think the very first DVD releases(back in 2002/3) didn't even have a BBC logo on them or it was in another corner completely and then moved to the top left. I think Dalek Invasion of Earth has the logo in the top right hand corner and the cover is not reversible and didn't get a 'special edition' re-release.

  • @2LaneTraveler
    @2LaneTraveler 3 роки тому +4

    Well, since I already got them all (I started collecting them around 2003), I would say so. I gather there's some new extra content for the new releases, so that's nice, but I hate buying the same titles over again, ya know? I think my first DVD was "The Talons of Weng Chiang". The second was "Genesis of the Daleks". I picked up a few here and there, and then when the series returned in 2005, the floodgates just opened, and I wouldn't be satisfied until I had them all. I even get the animated remakes ("Shada", "The Power of the Daleks", "The Invasion", etc.) when they come out.

I refused to junk the VHS when the dvds came out because even then i thought onr day, they will release these again in another format or with extra extras, and i didn't want to get into that. I was tge same with my vinyl records collection. I never junked them to rebuy them on cds like a lot of people did. The reason why we have the Blu Ray box sets is that fans didn't have all have all of the dvds and the BBC were not reissuing the previous dvds so the BBC decided to bring all the season stories on one boxset in bluray instead of dvd. It's only the new who that are released on dvd theses days and not classic who. The BBC are missing a trick with not releasing a whole season of stories on DVD as well as Blu Ray. I personally believe that the consumer should be given a choice. Dvd or Blu Ray or even 4k. What does any fan of the show think about this ?

They eventually started to come out so often I struggled to keep up, but when they ended the regular releases in 2014 I caught up. Was so glad they did eventually release Underwater Menace. The individual classic DVDs will always be my ultimate choice. I only recently completed my collection (it also took me around 10 years) and never really cared enough for the blu-ray boxsets because of price. Essentially if you bought every individual release (where there are around 130, 140 including the animations) at an average price of £6-10, the whole collection would cost around £800-1000, that is if you bought every release brand new. Re-collecting every classic who season at £40 would cost you the same amount, and that is if you manage to get the boxsets at all before scalpers get at 'em. So personally I have no interest in getting the blu-ray boxsets, just seems like a lot of trouble to collect them all over again, no matter how good they look. (Also my first classic Who DVD was Dalek Invasion of Earth)

    Several of the BBC's recent re-releases (in region 1, at least) seem to have changed the DVD logo on the covers on their listings... Both have pros and cons of course.Love them both I guess.

    For 70s and 80s Who, not so much.
    However, there are some extras on the DVDs that didn't get ported to the Bluray Collection Boxsets.

    Even the very latest DVD and BD animated releases have a reversible cover if you hate the current Doctor Who logo.

    I still have my collection. Wouldn't part with it and certainly won't be buying the Blu-Rays as I don't have anything that plays them. Couldn't be bothered shelling out again.
    My first DVD was the original release of the Green Death which I gave to a friend when I got the special edition.

    Classic Doctor Who well worth it. Modern Doctor Who with Jodie on DVD? No thanks!

    The best episodes were in the 1960s and 1970s.
