Man, back when James Rolfe put out good content and wasn't depressed.
I lost track of how many times I died to the level three boss only to realize that the lance didn't cut it...
Spoiler that you will appreciate: you are going to be forced to change weapons for different bosses, folks.
Guess who's back? Back again.. It's NES friend. Happy Wednesday everyone!
What an enjoyable lament! This is definitely a badge of honour for me too, and I'm glad you made it through as well. I had some pretty frustrating moments playing and you've captured them all quite nicely.
Hey! Fancy seeing you here. You watch this channel too? Just stumbled across it it a few days ago and Im really enjoying it esp since I just finished up quwebs content and I needed some new retro stuff.
Maybe the algorithm finally blessed me!
Welcome aboard, thanks for stopping by!
@NES Friend
Its great stuff! Im happily going thru your content now and looking forward to more.
I gotta admit. I’m in my 40s now and enjoy using save states and rewinds to just get a chance to reach levels I never got to and enjoy the content.
I could never beat this one, but I knew the most important thing - get the knife! Congrats, nice vid
Yeah I can’t shake off it’s frustrations, there’s too much BS. You are a better man than me for getting through it the right way
Thanks for this, NES friend. Even when I have seen dozens of reviews for a given game, I always feel like you give us a fresh perspective and I learn something new!
Congratulations on beating such a brutally difficult game. I’ve only ever completed the map once. I remember as a kid doing it and being so angry when it said I had to do it again. I refused. I’ve played through it a few times as an adult as well. Great video.
Please say “Spooker Dooker” at least once this month. Thanks man, great video
Congraturations. This review makes me feel strongth welling in my body.
I felt like you were Grandpa Simpson on this episode when he has all the kids around him and he's telling stories.
I was laughing all through this episode because of the harsh truths you were dropping such as the developers not liking you and don't care about your feelings 🤣🤣🤣
finished this game legit cuz it is a right of passage for retro gamers. great review bud!
Is it that time of the year already?
Bring on the horror themed games!
Ghosts 'n Goblins always bested me as a kid, but oddly enough you've told me something I do not remember at all, NES Friend: a continue option exists!
Now I have to finish this game.
Update: I finally did it! Kind of upsetting that it forces a game over on you after the victory screen -almost mockingly.
I shamefully have never accomplished this goal. I hang my hat on Battletoads as my most difficult game.
That one is way harder imo! Hats off to your hat hanger
The kind of game that'll kick you in the nuts, help you up, brush you off and make sure you're ok, then kick you again.
Makes me miss backyard wrestling
This version, if I'm remembering correctly, was developed by frequent NES port dev team Micronix, who's quality is all over the place and usually leans into the janky. They also developed the NES ports of 1942 and Athena, both regarded for being.. less than great.
That said, I do believe this is also one of the first NES games to use a mapper chip, as well. It's also quite the long running survivor, as it's appeared in a few collections and I do believe almost every iteration of Virtual Console, even snagging a spot on the US/PAL NES Classic.
Quite the legacy for an outsourced home port of an arcade title, but I think giving this version infinite continues was the best thing they did here, and likely a reason it's remembered so fondly. It's hard, but if you keep at it, you *can* do it, and I think that's given this version a positive spot in a lot of people's memories
Happy Wednesday! I only managed to beat this game using save states, I will try again without cheating. Great video as always Trav! As always, never chase red devils in your underwear only.
You beat Ghosts 'n Goblins. You da man!
Great video.
I never played the NES version, at least IIRC.
I played the arcade (in the 80s) version and yeah I wasn't very good at it. I also used to play the Amstrad CPC version (6128 and 464) and to this day it's my favorite version even though I never owned either of those computers. Thankfully two of my friends did. Then the Atari ST version which while technically better than the CPC version and closer to the arcade, it never managed to make me like it as much as the CPC version. In fact the CPC version remains my favorite one to this day.
In all these decades I never managed to beat the second level. Yes I am that bad at it.
I remember renting this a few times back in the day. It was ruthless, but fun at the same time. Never got even close to beating it even once, let alone twice in a row. One of these days I'm gonna have to give it another go.
Underrated channel
You're an underrated Michael. You're easily in my top 5!
@@NESFriend lol
Whoohoo! Another awesome episode with an equally awesome game. Can’t even count how many controllers me and my brothers went through on this one 😂
Great video as usual! I really need to master this like I did with ninja gaiden
Lol In time!
Algorithm comment.
Great analysis of this game. It owned me as a kid. I never bothered beating it. Good for you buddy!
3:43 That sort of bullshit got me in Diablo 1 recently: I started a new character and went two levels deep into the curch until I found a unique item! That was incredibly lucky I thought to myself. Before I could identify it though, I wanted to change some settings. I opened the menu, misclicked and gone was my character and its progress. I accidentally hit "New Game" which just throws you into character creation right away.
I immediately quit the game and installed the second one which has proper safeguards against clumsy users.
Oh... Oh no. That's heart breaking
I found an incorrect statement that there are no 1-ups in this game. On stage 4 where you're doing the bubble platforming, by jumping in a certain spot you can make a little helmet icon appear on the lowest platform. That's a 1-up. You also earn 1-ups for reaching 20,000 points, and for every 50,000 more you get after that.
Thanks. Not sure how I didn't catch that
Spooky season begins! Great job taking down this legendary beast. I'd...rather do just about anything else. It's just too much for me.
Set aside 3 nights, energy drinks, and a punching pillow.
My favorite was always the PSP one.
We did it, Trav, we did it! I’ve already had several job offers after beating this one.
Fellow comrade, good day sir.
This video is happy end.
Well, this isn't the best port, but it is probably the most well known Micronics production.
It's a good game
The Genesis game, Ghouls and Ghosts has 2 different difficulties, with a third pseudo hidden difficulty. f you play the Genesis cart on a Japanese Mega Drive, it will boot up Dai Makaimura, or the Japanese version of the game. This version has no easy mode, and instead of having a checkpoint at the bosses, there are only checkpoints at the halfway point of levels, so losing to a boss means you have to do half of the stage over again each time. It's brutal
How many hours does it take to beat this one? The real ending that is...
A good run, a little over an hour. With learning and practice, I probably logged 8-10
@@NESFriend sounds brutal my dear king.
Much like foosball, this game is the devil.
Ghost 'n Goblins gets a lot of slack because it was a very early NES game, but much of the difficulty is frustration from just how bad the port was. In the next year or so Capcom would start porting their own games, but here they're still relying on Micronics (whoever they actually were) and Micronics was more interested in getting the product out the door than making it good. Capcom wasn't very involved in the code. If Capcom wanted you to suffer, as you suggest, it wasn't from any decision they made except for hiring Micronics. The terrible jumping (worse than most fixed jump games), unfair enemies and RNG are all Micronics. In the near future Capcom would be making their own NES games and quality would greatly increase.
i certainly don't like the game but i at least have to respect it for being so damn evil it's like it was created by the devil himself
I'll die on this hill - this port SUCKS. The music, sound effects, and controls are hideous. I never did the second loop because the enemy placement is TERRIBLE. You missed the MAME version, but it's far superior just to hear better sounds
Hey go Whitesox
