Great recap on the situation! This situation is weird 'cause every one of schmooey's faked accomplishments are definitely 100% possible given someone tries hard enough. Myself and many other players have taken this as an opportunity to replicate his clips for real, and it's made playing the game much more fun as of late.
Dude, that's so cool! What an ingenious way to turn something negative into a positive! It's like a special challenge lol I really like that. Smart thinkin, good luck :)
What's crazy is that I feel like Schmooey could have actually gotten those FCs with enough time. Unfortunately he was just more focused on stealing that bounty money.
The worst thing is that this guy is actually incredibly talented at this game, and could get most, if not all of his faked achievements legitemately if he would put enough time into grinding them. But he chose the easier way out. And once he realized that it could pass unnoticed, he saved so much time being led astray by his greed.
In many ways cheating at the top competitive level is less about replacing skill and more as a substitute for impatience and frustration, someone knowing they are skilled enough they "could" get a time, but coming up short so much they begin to feel entitled as a good player to tip the scale in their favor.
Karl Jobst once said, “speed runners don’t cheat to get better times, they cheat to get better times faster” or something like that. This is the same concept

I'm honestly surprised he gave the money back. So many videos I've seen about players cheating runs and being speculated of cheating, usually just disappear and run off with the money. Honestly, this ending is one of the few good ones out there. Great vid.
Excellent video covering this situation. In hindsight Schmooey having a monopoly on accomplishments was very unhealthy for the scene, but since his exposure it seems everyone has a newfound motivation to get better now that the current skill ceiling is a lot more reasonable, and a lot of players are more goated than they realized. We're gonna be much stronger overall as a result of this, the future is looking good for us
Being able to help this from the start and seeing all the progress made by the community was nice. While the situation was tragic, the community has never been closer.
Yeah, I see hardly anyone talking about how he mentally affected so many. How he took tons of channel growth and with that financial growth of some people away as well, especially frif who really needed all eyes on him that he could get at the time. But the man still despite all that went and uploaded Spacerace content to get all the attention back. Ian who's been told he's second evering everything Schmooey's ever done, just cause Schmooey always sniped him, even though those were fake. Or Entropy being talked about how he makes faked clips, when that's not at all true. His cocky and terrible attitude and need for constant attention and reevaluation was something horrible that affected many mentally and demotivated TONS of people. I feel like that's a part hardly anyone talks about but I feel bad for those people he targeted. It is absolutely sad and goes way beyond a casual snipe anymore.
I just gotta say the editing on this is top-notch, crisp, clean and provides all the needed context to understand the situation. You just got your subcription bell clicked
Its rare to get a semi-happy ending to these videos. Schmooey did something wrong, but, credit where its due, he paid the money back and gave up the lie. How many runners have we seen where they just continue to stick to a ridiculous lie, and keep the money?
Then again, we see the exact same patterns with nearly every single cheater... Deny that you're cheating, admit a small portion as a compromise, realize the accusations won't stop, (optionally blame the moderators for overreacting) admit more, get caught completely, make an apology video where you blame childhood trauma, skip over the actual lies and issues such as being so toxic to others in the community by bragging how much better you are than they are and then expect forgiveness... Fascinating how nearly all follow the same path, nearly all show clear signs of narcissism and nearly all abuse the trust and friendship of those around them to reach that point.
@@someguy4915 yeah. I think, similar to other issues (like, say, drug abuse) people end up cheating for a variety of reasons, and there are many different types of personalities and situations that end up cheating (or addicted). There is no single profile for all cheaters. I think there are a slice of cheaters, maybe Schmooey included, where it's possible for them to make amends and move on without cheating again. It's definitely super common to see the Billy Mitchell archetype (absolute denial, burning friends and allies, almost delusional, some amount of charisma and charm), or the other common archetype of cheater which you describe (admit to some small transgression or innocent mistake which invalidates a single run or something, get caught cheating again, then blame some unconnected issue like a mental health condition or stress...). I have my doubts for these kind of cheaters, that they can be trusted to play honestly in the future. They rarely admit to what they did, or try to make amends. One of the benefits of these people is that the community tends to respond by implementing standards that make it harder to cheat, meaning future records are more reliably legit. People are often make the decision to cheat based on whether or not they think they will get caught.
He only apologized for getting caught, if he didn't get caught he would have still been doing it. Massive well done to the guys who caught him and worked together to stop it.
really solid video, this really hit the community hard but we're all rebuilding and working to make this place better than ever. thanks for making this vid dude
Great video. Thank you for recaping everything that has happened over the past week and a half in a way that is easily understandable for people that don’t actually understand this kinda stuff.
often top runners get frustrated with trying to reach a new goal, that they feel like should be reachable for them, but yet it doesn't get reached for so long. Most in this case don't cheat ofc, but some may slip and in peak of frustration decide to cheat it away. If they don't stop themselves, and they manage to get at least one cheated run on the leaderboard and not get caught - then they may feel bad, but also they will know that cheating is an option, and it becomes mentally easier to repeat the process again. And it's unlikely that they will come clean after such a bad thing they've done. All it can really take is one slip of judgement, and then it would all go downhill. Trackmania cheating scandal was quite a remarkable show of how one uncaught cheating top runner may cause others to cheat as well, including many well meaning people that just got frustrated and suspicious of said top runner, and that lead them to the path of cheating back their top spots.
@Kuurokuro there is a difference between cheating in a single player game and cheating in a Speedrun/competition based game, cheating in a single player game isn't an issue.
Your videos really are awesome. I don't even play Guitar Hero, but still winded up watching the whole thing. Really happy he paid the money back, not sure if there are legal routes to take should he had refused to.
wow, if the evidence wasn't so damning this guy might have lied his way out of it. he's so convincing and friendly-sounding. You can tell the mods in the call are like a bit confused, because on one hand it's so obvious he's cheating, but he's such a good liar. Like this is completely caught red-handed, he's completely screwed, and still weaving convincing lies. it's almost impressive
One thing is that the people in the call with him aren't "moderators" of the game like mods in speedrun , com, They were close friends with him and they're also top players of the game. But yeah, crazy that he kept lying and lying about it until it was out there to the whole community and then he finally admitted it fully.
Excellent video, never have i ever seen a situation handled so... reasonably from both parties as much as to give the money back, and well documented at that.
as soon as you mentioned the name Schmooey I knew what this was about thanks to another video I had seen at some point about this but you covered the details about how the cheating was identified much better. the video I saw before gave me enough info to understand the basic concept (fingering pattern was recognizable as wrong) but yours gave me enough info to understand how it was recognized and how it differed from a legitimate technique and it also did it in less time. this is only the second video of yours I've seen but you've quickly earned yourself a subscription
Great video!! One criticism is the way that the technical naming near the beginning was handled, I think throwing everything at once just breaks the pacing of the video and can confuse viewers. But apart from that, great work in all the research and editing!!
With as popular as speed running cheater exposé videos are now I’m honestly surprised people are still doing it. I don’t know how to cheat and have only dabbled in a couple speed games myself but I can’t even imagine the shame of ending up on a video
I saw this video earlier and was considering watching it… My fiancée wanted to watch a video Karl uploaded AFTER yours went up because she recognized him. I mean of course he was gonna do a video, that's his jam… But definitely wanted to come back and help yours get boosted by the algorithm because yours was up a few hours earlier, I saw it first, and … you had details he didn't (like Cheat Engine in his start menu, wtf, that wasn't what people might call a "clue" at the time?) Sucks that a good player would cheat. Likely nobody would ever trust one of his runs again without a metric crap ton of scrutiny, and even then there'll be doubts in their minds. I never really watched Guitar Hero runs before. What I've already seen … I can almost FOLLOW, but I sure as hell can't play. You guys are freakin' amazing!
Incredible video! You handled it very very well! It's worth noting that speedhacked FCs could be proven fake by playing a real FC or run of the chart, as they were not accurately sped up to 100% speed, instead only about 99.37% speed!
First Riolu in Trackmania community, now Schmooey in Guitar Hero. The saddest thing is that most of the records will eventually get beaten legitimately, but the reputation of these otherwise quite nice people will always be gone and their lives partitialy destroyed. I sort of hope that both will repent and in a while return back playing legit. Cheating, especially for money, is despicable. But I still think we should be able to forgive (not forget) these people eventually. I might be wrong though...
I dont even play guitar hero, but I just love these mini documentaries that random content creators like you put out, thanks for the great mini-doc! subbed
Nice video. As someone who was somewhat but less involved in the whole thing, it's interesting to finally see the exact process that the others went through. Also you explained all the terminology pretty well, if I had to guess, someone who was new to the game could easily understand this video.
This is a well produced video, clearly explaining what happened. I say this as someone who's never heard of any of these people, doesn't play music games, and never saw any of your other vids before. This one magically popped into my recommendations and it was so well done that I watched the whole thing and enjoyed learning about this community (even if the reason was a bit negative I think the result was overall positive). Thanks 👍🏾
It seems like any time someone gets caught faking a run they say “this good one that broke a record isn’t fake, but I did a fake run before.” It’s not a good strategy, I don’t know why it’s so prevalent.
I really appreciate how well you explained everything, as someone that has barely even heard of the games I feel like I can understand everything. Great job!
There's so many people who put a lot work doing these charts. I appreciate everyone who actually does this legit. I am working on getting good at clone hero as well.
hey man i truly hope you see this, I watch ALL of your videos. even for the games I dont like/ dont play(this one is one) however watching runs/making my own for myself for skyrim, mario,Zelda soulborne games etc, your v videos keep me "in the loop" of the wrong in the speed running community. GOOD WORK. ON EVERYTHING. the script the edits how you keep your video captivating/ set it up.you deserve to be way further than you are!
its so funny how sometimes cheating scandals like the one where the guy plays sm64 "blindfolded" get so popular to the point where they always get used as b-roll as an example of someone cheating a run
This video highlights some pretty bad cheating that's honestly pretty shameful to have done, but when Abyssoft talks about Cheat Engine i honestly laughed out loud. The audacity of using something called *Cheat Engine* and claiming not to have done anything is pretty hilarious.
To be fair, Cheat Engine can be good for practice. I run a game where there's no native way to speed up the gameplay, and it can be used to manipulate RNG for tests/routing, which has come in handy for me. In this case, it shouldn't have been necessary since there's a native way to slow down and practice as Abyssoft says, but it is actually useful in other games, and legitimate speedrunners do use it too.
Also to note having cheat engine in itself does not inheritably mean they were cheating. It does in this case of course but for example seeing cheat engine on the desktop of someone who speedruns can appear damming. However they could also be figuring out how the game works so they can create auto splitters or load removers. Or using cheats to theory craft tricks or routes.
@@RichterVonFuchs it's also used by modders to find addresses (like in with translation patches for doujin games) and by data hunters to, well, find unused data! Honestly it's gone way farther than "simply" gameshark/action replay for PC
Cheat Engine is a Memory viewing and manipulation tool. It is designed to be a cheat tool that lets you modify things like lives, health, game speed... etc... but since its initial development has grown to be so much more. It uses can range from cheating in a game, data mining for auto splitters, reverse engineering software, Q&A stress testing and much much more. The name has stuck and hence when its heard about or seen due to its name its "instant proof" but that is not the case. Having cheat engine on his PC wouldn't necessarily mean anything without the evidence of slow downs being used to link the two. So in this instance yes its funny that they actually used Cheat Engine to cheat and then try to deny it, but its just not a clear cut case of "Cheat Engine" = Cheater.
To be fair Cheat Engine has a lot of legitimate uses as well. I used to speedrun DS1 (don't worry, I'm garbage, lmao) and for a while the run I was practicing was all about getting a specific weapon to drop (Black Knight Halberd). It's only like a 15% or so chance to drop from one black knight early-ish in the run, so if you were grinding for WR you would just reset if it didn't drop. However, for practice most speedrunners would just use cheat engine to force spawn it if it didn't drop so they could at least practice the run.
I seen a comment but i've been mentioning it since the start of the whole drama, and is that Schmooey is so genetically talented for Clone Hero, and if he wasnt impatient he couldve easily have gotten every since accomplishment on there, and more probably, with his genetics he'd improve at an even faster rate, playing legitimately. I love this video and it really highlights everything that happened, thank you for this We're a really small community, and it hurt seeing Schmooey do this tbh
Dude what are you talking he is not even close to being capable of doing any of the stuff he was uploading and will never be he already reached his genetic speed cap he isn't getting any faster and his fastest isn't even that fast definitely no where near fast enough to do any of the things he uploaded
@@sinastry3684 I’ve been heavily in the clone hero community for 5 years. People in the community think the same as me. There’s also that this is a 2 month old comment and other stuff has transpired since this comment

Sounds like a young man who got carried away after a moment of frustration and it snowballed into this uncontrollable thing. I normally never watch cheater videos because the drama does not interest me much but, Abyssoft is always such an even tempered, wonderful youtuber (thank you!) to listen to! I do think Schmooey is making amends by paying back and sure, wasn't a nice thing, but we right our wrongs how we can in life. All the best to this really cool community and also to Schmooey.
Not gonna lie, I feel like the chances of me becoming a pro football (soccer) player is higher than me becoming a pro GH player. Like. When I see this, I don't get how people pull off those INSANE plays
Yeah it’s one of those things you gotta practice ALOT, you get so familiar with the patterns and techniques that the game literally slows down for you. To have the skill and be consciously aware of the 10 buttons you gotta press in the next 2 seconds takes concentration and patience that I don’t have. I smoke too much weed lmao
I have ALWAYS hated this game, ever since I was a kid I hated it, but I respect the amount of skill it takes to do it and I find the analysis of the techniques very interesting, the passion of those that play this game at a high level is respectable and the interrogations were the best part of this to me lol. Amazing video man I really enjoyed it!
Using cheats in a single player game to have fun only: Superb Using cheats in multi-player or competitive single-player games to deceive others or ruin their time with a game: A absolute No-Go

Real talk, this guy is really good at cheating. As opposed to other video game cheaters, he covered most of his bases. And he got away with cheating so many times for so long… But, like every serial killer, they eventually get too cocky.
such a great video, on the one hand it's terrible to hear what happened but it's also good to hear that it seems like it's been dealt with very well, and that schmooey returned the bounty money. wishing the guitar/clone hero community all the best!
All of the ppl saying ""learn real guitar"" are so laughable My guy learning an electronic toy were you nave to mash 10 buttons is way more diffrent than a normal guitar even tho i havent played both . No offence but it does not make any sense
While this guy is CLEARLY cheating, i'd like to point out that simply having cheat engine doesn't mean a player is cheating in general. There's a lot of games that don't have practice tools that cheat engine can be used to help out with and it can also be used to set up things like challenge runs or just make wacky things happen. I just want to point this out since both the name of the program and the way it was presented in the video make it seem like cheating is the ONLY thing its good for. It's always best to look at things case by case.
Honestly, if you decide to give someone money for an achievement, you have an obligation to at least have some standard to follow so as not to be unfair and also not to be cheated. The fact that the guy managed to get money with such lazy fraud is pathetic and says more about who is giving money than who is receiving. You can be sure that Schmooey was thinking everytime "cool, I'll make more easy money off these suckers".
@@makingadjustments The cheating was incredibly easy to miss..a few missed hand movements here and there. You'd actually have to go in and analyze it a couple frames at a time just to look for cheating which most aren't gonna do especially for someone they knew didn't cheat (or at least didn't start out cheating). Moderators only really hardcore look into submissions like this if they have reason to believe it's fake which they didn't at the time, if they looked into every submission with a toothpick and a comb they'd take ages just adding submissions to the board..which isn't ideal for the community. Don't blame the community for someone else's action..he shouldn't of been cheating, that's his fault., and most of the community isn't acting as moderators thus they aren't looking for proof of cheating..if you wanna blame ANYONE for him cheating so long blame him and the moderators who he FRIENDED to get away with it (you never assume your friends are doing messed up shit like cheating and stealing money).
This is actually really awesome 👍! Cheaters don't belong! I'm a retired semi veteran of guitar hero but that's what I mean by retired. I don't play anymore. Haven't in a decade it feels like. But maybe someday when I can support my GH habits I will gladly join this community and give ALL OF YOU a run for your money
Yeah he did it a long time before he ever claimed a bounty, though at the end I think he was doing it intentionally for bounties. Bit of a click baity title that isn’t really untrue, I think that’s totally acceptable
15:20 - As a member of the Clone Hero community, I'll just say this: I think he's sorry he was caught. By their very nature, cheaters eventually out themselves anyway, so it was only a matter of time.
Ok, but can we appreciate how amazing the CH community is? Not only did Shmooey apologize and give back the money, but absolutely NO ONE is attacking him or insulting him (I've seen at least 3 videos of the topic, and I couldn't fit a lot of hate), and all I see is more motivation to grind and beat his fake records! Faith in humanity, restored.
I def wouldn't have used the fact that cheat engine was merely installed as evidence. Competitive players still have lives beyond the game they compete in. there are lots of things completely unrelated to guitar hero that it could've been used for.
I disagree. I think because it's a viable method for cheating the game, it could be used as supporting evidence. it's a nice addition. I was familiar with the story, and had not seen that clip also
I was thinking the same thing however it's mainly to illustrate that there's proof the game was slowed down and cheat engine can do this and that cheat engine was installed. It could have been presented better in the video. It kind of made it seem like merely having cheat engine was the problem. But If he wasn't cheating in the first place I don't think anyone would have ever learned or cared about him having it installed

Awesome stuff, definitely appreciated the in depth explanations for virtually everything.

Great video. Thank you for recaping everything that has happened over the past week and a half in a way that is easily understandable for people that don’t actually understand this kinda stuff.
ill never understand cheating in something you like. it just puts a stain on the whole community for awhile.
often top runners get frustrated with trying to reach a new goal, that they feel like should be reachable for them, but yet it doesn't get reached for so long.
Many ppl cheat to complete their goals faster. The wait takes too long.
MONEY. why do u think so many streamers cheat..
Fantastic video Abyss. An interesting story told in a truly objective and respectful manner.
wow, if the evidence wasn't so damning this guy might have lied his way out of it. he's so convincing and friendly-sounding.
@@Tyler_Kwakits nice that you got your money back

I mean of course he was gonna do a video, that's his jam… But definitely wanted to come back and help yours get boosted by the algorithm because yours was up a few hours earlier, I saw it first, and … you had details he didn't (like Cheat Engine in his start menu, wtf, that wasn't what people might call a "clue" at the time?)
Sucks that a good player would cheat.
I was literally only subbed to riolu for 1 month before he was found out. Quite a shame tbh cause I was enjoying his content
At least Schmooey apologised and handed back the money. Nobody’s heard a peep out of Riolu at all.

It seems like any time someone gets caught faking a run they say “this good one that broke a record isn’t fake, but I did a fake run before.”
It’s not a good strategy, I don’t know why it’s so prevalent.
It's a common liar's strategy - admit a small misdeed and then claim that's the only thing you ever did wrong.
To be fair it works for some cheaters. Their records stay up because you can't prove they were faked.
I really appreciate how well you explained everything, as someone that has barely even heard of the games I feel like I can understand everything. Great job!
There's so many people who put a lot work doing these charts. I appreciate everyone who actually does this legit. I am working on getting good at clone hero as well.
Thanks for standing up for our community. It was an honor to work with you to help expose him.
"He blames a traumatic experience as the catalyst for his behaivor, but he has no excuse for what he did."
That sentence doesn't make sense.
People who have to cheat rarely make sense when explaining themselves which is a instant give away
Just because someone has a reason they did something bad, doesn't usually mean they should be excused from punishment or criticism
hey man i truly hope you see this, I watch ALL of your videos. even for the games I dont like/ dont play(this one is one) however watching runs/making my own for myself for skyrim, mario,Zelda soulborne games etc, your v videos keep me "in the loop" of the wrong in the speed running community. GOOD WORK. ON EVERYTHING. the script the edits how you keep your video captivating/ set it up.you deserve to be way further than you are!
Awesome video man, you covered this so well. I've never heard of your channel until but you definitely got a sub from me.
its so funny how sometimes cheating scandals like the one where the guy plays sm64 "blindfolded" get so popular to the point where they always get used as b-roll as an example of someone cheating a run
This was a perfect recap of the situation.
It showed parts even I didn’t know about it! Great job
I seen a comment but i've been mentioning it since the start of the whole drama, and is that Schmooey is so genetically talented for Clone Hero, and if he wasnt impatient he couldve easily have gotten every since accomplishment on there, and more probably, with his genetics he'd improve at an even faster rate, playing legitimately.

yeah dude the top players have years and years of practice

@@makingadjustments The cheating was incredibly easy to miss..a few missed hand movements here and there. Moderators only really hardcore look into submissions like this if they have reason to believe it's fake which they didn't at the time, if they looked into every submission with a toothpick and a comb they'd take ages just adding submissions to the board..which isn't ideal for the community.
