I just bought one, thanks for the tips! I bought it so I can do things like reading and listening to podcasts/music without having the allure of a smartphone. I’m going to nerf my smartphone so it does only a few things like navigation. In this way I want to find the balance between the good and useful things and the addiction risk of a smartphone and too much screen time.
@@Techsploder I bought one a few months ago prior to a beach vacation. It was perfect for beach reading, as well as reading around the house. I find it very easy to use one handed, which I find myself needing when one of my cats decides it’s time to climb up on my lap or on my arm for pets. I use it whenever possible when I don’t need my phone as the screen is much more friendly to my old eyes.
I just bought my Boox Palma, and it is a game changer. I love it to much! I get to have access to all reading apps, and not be contained in Kindle's ecosystem. Thank you so much for exploring the settings of the Palma, I'll go straight to it and customize it. Very helpful video! 🥰
That’s good to hear! And I think you meant “too” much ;) I wonder why no one is comparing the Palma to the Hibreak by Bigme. I’m curious how the two compare, especially since the latter also comes in color e-ink.
Love mine. Read on it all the time. Convenient to hold. Customization is a huge plus for me. I find the shorter eye excursion per line during reading is very easy on my eyes. Also bought a boox go color 7. I don’t expect to be upgrading my kindles any time soon given how great these devices are.
I haven't pulled the trigger on the Palma yet. I might though. I have an older Nova 3 from Onyx Boox and I've loved it. But one of the reasons I love it is because it comes with a stylus which makes it so useful as a notepad as well. I wish they would make a Palma that comes with a stylus but I'm not sure that's going to happen. Anyway, I'm happy to see Onyx Boox becoming more popular. It would be nice to see competition from US companies in this particular device domain.
I love the form factor. It's a goldilocks device. I already have a Max Lumi 2, and a Tab C. Both are really nice and work extremely well. No complaints whatsoever. But for portability and versatility, this is really well designed. The fact that you have all the button and gesture options to really personalize it to your needs per app is wonderful. Yes, you lose a stylus support. No EMR devices can function on it. But it's not meant for that. It's meant for mobile content consumption. And still, it gives you access to the Google Play library that makes it much more useful than your normal Amazon Kindle, and can still let you enjoy all the Kindle content. So, it's not for everyone. Yes, it's less secure than the latest and greatest Android 14 Upside Down Cake. I would say if you intend to use it as a normal device, keep it off the LAN, since it would be a weak entry point for hackers. Other than that, if you treat it like another untrusted IOT device, then you'll be fine.
I've owned a Palma since it was launched. I really enjoy using it, and would love if it had SIM capabilities. It would be a great minimalist phone that still has full Play Store capabilities. I downloaded Beeper to mine so I can send and receive messages through it as long as I'm on Wi-Fi.
There’s speculation they released this version to see how well it did and that future versions with have SIM capabilities. We do have e-ink smartphones from Hisense and Bigme, but they’re aimed more at the Chinese market.
I’ve heard the Hibreak by Bigme is just like the Palma, and has SIM options as well as color e-ink option. Not sure it’s as popular though. Not sure why.
@@chrisrioux First, its primary language option is Chinese and, unfortunately, the conversation to English isn’t complete, so it’s a little awkward to use for users who are primary English speakers. Second, I’ve seen mixed reviews about its call capabilities. The Palma at least does what it says it’s for well. There’s also the Hisense H9 e-ink phone, I believe, but that seems to have fallen off the radar.
I mean, maybe eventually but probably not for a very long time if I had to guess. I don't think Amazon wants to stop supporting old versions of Android too quickly with the Kindle app. It's certainly in their best interest to keep more devices supported.
This is on my wishlist for Christmas. But if I don’t get it I am buying it myself. I am going on a cruise In Jan that I want to use it on and an all inclusive in May and this will be perfect to use at the pool. Since it connects to WiFi I can still have whatsapp on there to communicate with the butler service that will come with my room and I can leave my phone in the room safe.
Hi, good video, thanx! Does the Palma has dark mode? I would like to read at night in my bed with as little of light coming from the screen … Thanx in advance 🙏🏼
On their instagram page boox posted that they were working on a dark mode for their native reader app, but it's gonna take a while until all boox devices gain access to it since there were some problems with the software version or something like that
I wonder why no one is comparing the Palma to the Hibreak by Bigme. I’m curious how the two compare, especially since the latter also comes in color e-ink, and has SIM option to use it as your phone (I think).
I believe that that is because the kindle app hijacks the volume buttons. So you need to set the buttons to volume, and then use the kindle app settings to turn the 'volume key' into page controls. That's what another video said anyway
I don't understand what you mean about Android 11 OS not being supported. The books Palma runs on Android 11. So it's supported on the device. Are you talking about potential upgrades down the line to Android 12 or higher? I'd be highly skeptical that that will actually happen.
@@Techsploderyes. Android 11 is no longer supported as of feb 2024. Book releases firmware but Android 11 is no longer supported. It is common knowledge.
Also the article you reference by David pierce specifically addresses this. I was just wondering what that actually means. He said in that article that eventually his apps would slowly stop working. I see other box devices with Android 11 but many new with 12.
Also not trying to start a debate. Just genuinely concerned about it. I want to to know if you can get to the Liberty University online platform and library and if you can download logos Bible software to it with the 11OS. That was the reasoning behind my question.
From what I’ve read, this OS 11 is ancient, as it was released over 4 years ago.. Current Android OS is 15. This means not only lack of support for apps being updated in the Google Play store, but more importantly, lack of security patches for this older OS means it could be the low-hanging fruit on your LAN that lets hackers gain access to your network and potentially your accounts and personal data. I’m going to see if I can get a Palma 2 or something with a newer OS.
Do you own a Boox Palma? How are you using it?

I only have book apps on mines. I love that I can read from Hoopla and Everand on this device!
@ Libby and Hoopla are awesome on the Palma. I don’t know Everand. Is that a library app or something else?

Awesome! Shorter eye excursion? Not familiar with that part of it.
I think they mean less eye travel per line of text compared to a full size e-reader.
