This might be a somewhat jaundiced view but I wonder if (at least part of) the popularity is a triumph of marketing and getting 'influencers' to talk about it. If you were to ask them about their real-time, ongoing use my guess would be that they don't carry it with them everywhere and that, if they read (not a given) then they do it on their phones. I can't for myself imagine many contexts in which I would not want to also have my smartphone with me (for phone and messaging purposes) and in most of those contexts I'd likely have a small bag with me that my Kindle would easily fit in. Maybe there are some people who are happy to walk somewhere without a phone/means of being in contact and could make do with just taking the Palma (because they either don't have a Kindle or similar and don't want to carry a bag, however small) but that sounds like a pretty small use case to me. Why would I take the Palma and my smartphone when I can just as easily take a Kindle (which I already have) and a smartphone?
Sounds crazy and most people won't want to do this, but with my new Palma 2 that I just got today, I went ahead and added a 1.5TB MicroSD TF card to it, increasing it to such a ginormous quantity that I can store my entire ebook, audiobook, and comic book library in the one device, and maybe a little bit of music as well. It's not just whether I'm going to use it or not, but also the fact that when you use BOOX Drive, you can host the device on the wifi and let others pull from it. So you then become a portable SSD basically for others to enjoy from your collection.
I appreciate the review. I ordered the Palma 2. Never heard of Boox until a few weeks ago, and then I started doing more research and learned more about e-ink reeders. It's an interesting concept for minimalist reading experience free of distractions. I've seen other companies make phone devices and I love the idea of a minimalist phone but it doesn't seem to be practical yet. The black and white color i find appealing. Cant wait for it to arrive to test it out.
Kit, given the Go 6 is nearly half the price of the Palma 2 and, albeit a little wider, is both shorter and lighter than the Palma 2, what would be the reasons to go for the Palma? Would it come down to more ram and BSR? You also get more screen estate with the Go 6.
zero upgrades over the 1st generation. The only different thing is the fingerprint reader and in my opinion it's just not worth it if you already own the first. I was really hoping they would add sim support to make this a smartphone so people don't have to carry 2 phones around.
Palma is so weird because half the people want it to be a phone and then also want it to magically function like an lcd screen. I'm glad I got the go 6 instead, it's almost half the price, is about as tall, and has a nice width that's easy to carry around. Just turn off the navigation ball and tweak the settings like on any android device and you've got an excellent turn page eReader.
No no no..... This would be the perfect phone. I was waiting for weeks to buy it when the 2 came out and then it was NOT a phone..... So now I'm onto the bigme hibreak black and white 👍
Its really crazy to me that companies are SO pressured to release a "new" product every year. Just adding a fingerprint sensor is an insane reason to relaunch this. Just wait until you have more to offer! People already love the Palma, you dont need to re-convince us, Boox!
Thanks for the wonderful review! Waiting for this review for half a month since your last one after the Boox Oct. product release. This video totally answers my questions about the difference between Palma gen 1 and gen 2. Hope to see more videos about the performance comparison between Palma 1 and 2, how much faster can Palma 2 be.
Fantastic, just the device I have been waiting for. I am looking to upgrade from a kindle 2014, I read._a lot_ of kindle books with audible whispersync and that is my primary use case so I've been using my iphone mostly but really need an e-ink device for the eye strain. Is the fingerprint reader really the main thing differentiating these, same speakers also since screen is same? Where I live the palma 1 is almost 43 euro cheaper in local store than palma 2 from their eurostore. I don't think I care about the finger print reader much.
@@aquariuskiwilog Yeah, the first one is still working just fine. If you aren't bothered about the fingerprint reader or the newer Android you'll be absolutely fine with the first gen for what you've described there. Cheers!
@@KitBetts-Masters I realize what I meant to write was not whispersync but "immersive" mode I think they call it when you read and listen at the same time. Perfect to keep the rhythm and flow when reading for folks like me who get derailed often. Great stuff much appreciate the video (and future ones) and reply cheers!
Can you comment if the processor or newer android is at all noticeable in the palma 2 vs palma 1? Also would the Palma 2 fit in a Palma 1 case? Maybe if a hole for the fingerprint reader is drilled out?
Surprising to me that as of now it doesn’t appear the buttons can be mapped to music apps for playback controls. A firmware update could address this and make the Palma 2 a nice usb-c digital audio player.
@@jacobrichards3728 eeep. I've refused to install chess on it as I'll be unable to focus on reading! 😂 But my experience of playing chess on Boox is positive. You just need to play about with the eink centre settings to get it looking good! 🙂

I guess... Still, I have Nova 3 as my only e-ink device and regular smartphone. I would most likely replace those by something like Go 10.3 plus Palma-style phone combo.

Great video Kit, a couple of questions. First, have you tried to use the Supernote App with the Palma or Palma 2? It seems to be that would be a cool way to be able to access those notes on another e-ink device. Second, does the Moaan run full Android, and if so, would you see it being able to run the Supernote App as well? Thanks in advance.
@@Change-1820 Hiya, I haven't tried the supernote app, but it should work. The Moaan is full android, but it has no Google play store, so you'd need to find the APK somewhere. I agree that would be really cool. I think a little field notes style jotter from supernote would be amazing. There certainly seems to be a lot of people asking for something this small with a great stylus!

I'm not a heavy phone user, so a sim-capable Palma would be great. Other features I would like: color screen, stylus, note app, improved camera.
I'll stick to my Palma for now, not a major update the 2nd gen.
